To go to a&e

Ds, 8, woke up with a tummy acher on Monday morning. By afternoon it was worse so I took him to the doctor who diagnosed wind. She gave me some tablets for him but he didn't really improve and had a sleepless night. On Tuesday afternoon he was still bad so took him to a different doctor (on call). He diagnosed a tummy bug and sent us off with calpol. He had s night of no sleep again last night. Has vomited both nights but has no temperature. He then slept all day today, woke up at 5 a bit perkier and ate done cereal. He is now sobbing with pain and says the pain is the worst yet. A&e is 90 minutes away. What do I do, would a tummy bug really be this bad. No temp. Not a complaining child usually.

Sobbing with pain is not a tummy bug! Have the various doctors you're seen ruled out appendicitis?

HPandBaconSandwiches · 07/06/2017 22:28

If you've given him Calpol and he's sobbing with pain then yes of course you should go to A&E!

If he settles with simple analgesia then see the GP again.

It's much safer to call the non emergency number than ask on here though.

Hope he feels better soon.

PeaFaceMcgee · 07/06/2017 22:29

My daughter sobs with pain with a tummy bug. Call 111 if you're worried and a nurse will call you back.

Bravas · 07/06/2017 22:29

I thought appendix too, can make you vomit and pain in peaks and troughs. Does it hurt more if you press, then release quickly, so hurting more on release? I would call 111.

MissWitch · 07/06/2017 22:29

No don't go to A&E, especially if he's had D+V within the last 24 hrs. Have you tried a hot water bottle and some calpol? If you're worried ring 111, they'll assist you. If he developesva temperature along with any symptoms of meningitis, deprivation or appendicitis then that's different and requires urgent medical attention.

TheMonkeyAndThePlywoodViolin · 07/06/2017 22:30

Vomiting is often followed by diarrhoea so could be cramps, but best to call 111

SasBel · 07/06/2017 22:30

Call the NHS, do you have the star service? No one can diagnose over the internet.
Waiting in a&e could be all night job.
Poor baby, hope he improves soon.

MissWitch · 07/06/2017 22:31

*septicaemia not deprivation stupid autocorrect!

GlitteryFluff · 07/06/2017 22:31

I'd call 111

Toysaurus · 07/06/2017 22:31

A few years ago, five doctors all told me the agonising stomach pain that had me doubled over on the floor crying and vomiting for weeks was a stomach bug. The sixth one, after I was carted off in the middle of the night by an ambulance said scan for gallstones. It was gallstones.

If you are not happy get another opinion. Sometimes doctors fuck up.

MissWitch · 07/06/2017 22:32

Definitely ring 111 though. And I agree with SasBel, waiting in A+E will be hours which will be horrible for both of you.

Missingthepoint · 07/06/2017 22:33

111 seems the best next step.

ArchieStar · 07/06/2017 22:33

Cut his abdomen into 9, where about is the pain?

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

PurpleDaisies · 07/06/2017 22:33

I'd call OOH or 111 before going to A and E but it sounds like you do need proper medical advice.

ArchieStar · 07/06/2017 22:34

Whatever the response to my post, definitely ring 111 and tell them whereabouts! I hope he feels better soon poor thing

BarbarianMum · 07/06/2017 22:34

Appendicitis comes with a temperature doesn't it? It sounds like a bug to me OP but if you are worried call the OOH or 111.

YogiYoni · 07/06/2017 22:35

Is there an ooh nearer than a&e? My DS had similar symptoms recently and I called 111 and got an appointment at our local hospital (30 mins closer than a&e) within an hour. The GP we saw was concerned so they called ahead to the main hospital and when we got there we were able to go straight to the assessment ward, bypassing a&e. might be similar near you if you're also rural?

TreaterAnita · 07/06/2017 22:36

I would always err on the side of caution with a child sobbing in pain, especially if they're not normally a complainer and you can't calm them down. Agree re advice to call 111 but if you're still worried go to A&E.

1981trouble · 07/06/2017 22:37

Re appendicitis possibility - simple test done by many Drs is to see if they can hop on one leg - if they can it rules out appendix, if they can't should be investigated further.
(Don't know how accurate it would be for you to do at home but I know of a few who have had that test done correctly - might help with decision making)

HeyRoly · 07/06/2017 22:37

I would be dubious about the tummy bug diagnosis bearing in mind that the pain has been going on for three days and he's only vomited a couple of times at night.

That doesn't sound like a bug. You'd have to rule out appendicitis considering he's in so much pain.

donajimena · 07/06/2017 22:37

Trying not to be alarmist but my friend was diagnosed with a tummy bug. Turned out to be appendicitis which led to peritonitis. Please ring 111 but if at any point go to a & e.
All well and good a pp saying stay away from a & e if he's had the trots but my friend had the trots. Had she gone to A & E maybe she wouldn't have got so ill.

missadasmith · 07/06/2017 22:39

don't put a hot water bottle on. if it is e.g. the appendix, you will do more harm than good.

my mum needed emergency surgery to have a a half burst appendix removed. her only symptom was pain. no temperature.

ring 111. you know your DS. go with your gut. hope he is ok.

mummysworld080213 · 07/06/2017 22:40

Constipation diarrhoea vomiting blood in the urine all untold common signs of appendicitis it almost cost me my husband and our child was within 2 minutes of being left without a dad I suggest a&e and not leave without an answer i took my boy to a&e at 9 months with a chest infection the doctor told me I was a over worried first time mum and refused to X-ray him I refused to leave until he was x rayed and sent home on steroids and antibiotics

FreshsatsumaforDd · 07/06/2017 22:41

Someone I knew had a twisted bowel......seek advice.

3luckystars · 07/06/2017 22:42

Can he jump up and down on one leg?

Regardless of any posts or anything anyone would say, or the journey, I would bring him to hospital.
