To go to a&e

Ds, 8, woke up with a tummy acher on Monday morning. By afternoon it was worse so I took him to the doctor who diagnosed wind. She gave me some tablets for him but he didn't really improve and had a sleepless night. On Tuesday afternoon he was still bad so took him to a different doctor (on call). He diagnosed a tummy bug and sent us off with calpol. He had s night of no sleep again last night. Has vomited both nights but has no temperature. He then slept all day today, woke up at 5 a bit perkier and ate done cereal. He is now sobbing with pain and says the pain is the worst yet. A&e is 90 minutes away. What do I do, would a tummy bug really be this bad. No temp. Not a complaining child usually.

As others have said, 111 Flowers

Littledrummergirl · 07/06/2017 22:49

When did he last poo? Constipation can cause those symptoms.

DonttouchthatLarry · 07/06/2017 23:03

Just wanted to add my friend's son was admitted to hospital in severe pain and at first they couldn't work out what was wrong with him - it was appendicitis but his was on the wrong side!

jarhead123 · 07/06/2017 23:09

Definitely go! As others have said it could be appendix

Goldmandra · 07/06/2017 23:12

Appendicitis is very difficult to rule in or out.

DD1 was admitted three times with appendicitis over two weeks and eventually ended up with a huge abscess where her appendix had been because the surgeon wan't convinced she was in enough pain. She was very poorly by the time they removed it.

DD2 was sent to A&E three times by our GP because he thought she had appendicitis and she didn't have it on any of them.

I would go to A&E.

Bowserlovesmojitos · 07/06/2017 23:14

111 or A & E definitely.

Hopping on one leg - totally unreliable. I could do it even before going for surgery for a very nearly ruptured and very inflamed/infected appendix.

Haudyerwheesht · 07/06/2017 23:16

Could be the glands in his tummy - think it's called mesocentric adenitis. Dd had it recently and it very very aloe sky mimicked appendicitis . Get him seen though if he's still in as much pain.

Haudyerwheesht · 07/06/2017 23:17

Aloe sky??? Closely

wheresmyphone · 07/06/2017 23:18

ARCHIESTAR

please can you explain the numbers thing: looks really useful. Thx!

SkyeCoo · 07/06/2017 23:22

Don't do the 'hop on one leg' test ffs. I had that done to me and because I could hop appendicitis was ruled out. It burst and I nearly died. Call 111.

Topseyt · 07/06/2017 23:36

Hop on one leg just has the ring of an old wives' tale.

Get proper advice. Personally I would go to A & E because appendicitis is a distinct possibility and needs to be specifically ruled in or out.

I wish him all the best.

Ontheboardwalk · 07/06/2017 23:44

Hopping on one leg! I posted about not being able to skip anymore, attempting to hop would land me in A&E!

Agree with other PP saying ring 111

If I end up in A&E tonight it wasn't my own fault for attempting to hop.

If a post appears saying my annoying neighbour has been hopping all night that's not me!

All the best OP

Threadworms?

ArchieStar · 07/06/2017 23:48

@wheresmyphone

It's something I've seen as a nursing resource, each section can explain a possible illness but they also interact so lower right (7) would most commonly be appendicitis, or it could be bowel/gynae related which is 8 and 9.

If you do a google of abdomen pain sections and click images there are loads on there, really helps to narrow down when trying to describe to health professionals if they can't see your abdomen at the time Smile

lljkk · 08/06/2017 00:10

90 minutes away, each way, is grim.
I honestly don't know what I'd do... try hard not to travel 3 hrs round trip for no reason.

lljkk · 08/06/2017 00:10

ps: are you in UK??

Deckthehallswithjammydodgers · 08/06/2017 00:20

I would def take mins a child sobbing in pain is not normal xx

DermotTheSprog · 08/06/2017 08:02

I didn't read the replies til now because after I'd read what I'd written I realised it had been going on 60 hours and I couldn't go through another night like that so went to ooh and then onto a&e. I am just back. They were super and did make him hop on one leg! Anyway, it's possibly viral. Little sod recovered while waiting to see the doctor! Of course I was glad and they still checked him all over but I'll bet if I'd stayed home he'd not have recovered so quickly. Off to bed now.

Yes the gp told my son to hop on one leg too, it's true!

I'm glad he is ok and I think you are great to bring him, it was the right thing as he was in such pain.
Well done, I'd have done the same. I hope you get s rest today

BarbarianMum · 08/06/2017 08:22

Glad he's feeling better. We took ds2 to a&e once, after a week of on/off tummy pain turned into acute sobbing on the floor pain. Turned out he was constipated! The shame! (But better to be safe than sorry).

MissWitch · 08/06/2017 13:03

Glad he's feeling better. Hope you get some rest today.

Goldmandra · 08/06/2017 15:45

Don't do the 'hop on one leg' test ffs. I had that done to me and because I could hop appendicitis was ruled out. It burst and I nearly died.

The surgeon used this on DD1 but, because she was only little, he stood her on the bed which reduced the shock that would make it hurt (I realised this later). I consider us to be extremely blessed that she made a full recovery in the end.

PatMullins · 08/06/2017 16:01

I second the mesenteric adenitis, DD has flare ups quite often but there's nothing they can do Sad
