To be pissed about this chicken pox parent?

So, first family holiday after DS finished treatment for cancer,

All going well, having a fun time, DH and I were sat enjoying tea whilst DS played in the soft play area in the ball pit, then this family arrived, with both children covered in chicken pox!!!!

My face must have registered horror, the mother turned to me and snapped "well, you shouldn't take him out if he's not well!" (DS is still quite bald and requires mobility help so it is still pretty obvious)

Now DS needs to start a course of medication, chicken pox is too much for his system to handle and the moment so soon post treatment... WTF was this woman thinking bringing 2 pox infested children to a children's play area?!?!

AIBU to keep giving her dirty looks and wonder what she was thinking?

Rant over

Maybe they're not infectious anymore.

ScarlettFreestone · 07/06/2017 13:22

You aren't being unreasonable at all to be upset, your poor DS.

Rather than dirty looks though a polite, calm (if you can manage it) conversation educating her might be useful.

PotteringAlong · 07/06/2017 13:23

How do you know they were infectious? If the spots are crusted over then she was completely fine to take them out and you giving her dirty looks was completely unreasonable.

BenguinsMummy · 07/06/2017 13:26

They were infectious, the spots on Ines face were still seeping... and the woman had a 3rd child with her who could be incubating it for all she knows...

MrsBobDylan · 07/06/2017 13:27

Jesus wept. I think you would be well within your rights to shoot dirty looks or even throw shit at her, especially for her arsy statement to you.

I just don't understand what is wrong with people like this. Get her thrown out.

Cheby · 07/06/2017 13:28

Fucking hell OP, YANBU!

Selfish bitch of a woman, bringing them out when infectious. I really hope your DS is ok.

MyGuideJools · 07/06/2017 13:30

She's a stupid cow! Maybe the people running the ball pit shouldn't have let her in? Health and safety and all that.....i can't believe how selfish some people areAngry

Jemimapuddleduk · 07/06/2017 13:31

I would have been exactly the same. So sorry your ds is having to have the anti chickenpox medication. My ds finished Chemo last June for AML and was at risk for a while whilst immune system still low. We had a letter from our Macmillan nurse to send to parents at ds's nursery to ensure they were aware of an immunocompromised child there.
Ds has only recently been able to have his MMR jabs again as the chemo wiped out his original ones. Such a worry. I am so pissed off people chose not to vaccinate too putting my son at risk but that's another thread.
Sorry you've had to go through this.

AppleMagic · 07/06/2017 13:33

I'd have reported her to the front desk/reception. They shouldn't be letting anyone obviously ill in. Soft play is grim enough as it is.

Mumoftu · 07/06/2017 13:34

So she said you shouldn't bring your child out if he's unwell while she was out with 2 unwell kids? She's a special kind of stupid isn't she?
Hope your boy is ok.

sparechange · 07/06/2017 13:36

YANBU!
Why on earth did the reception staff let them in?!
Strong complaint to them asap...

Enidblyton1 · 07/06/2017 13:43

YANBU, that woman was being extremely thoughtless.

My DD caught chicken pox whilst at a soft play area - from a boy who was infectious just before the spots came out. I honestly wouldn't take a child with low immunity to soft play because the chances of catching something are quite high!

Enidblyton1 · 07/06/2017 13:44

Yes, agree you should speak to reception - they should not be letting people in with obvious infectious spots.

Nonibaloni · 07/06/2017 13:45

I'll never forget the mother that reported a girl for bullying. The girl was going through chemo (she was terminal, I don't know if she knew) and was having a party in her house because she hadn't seen her friends for ages and obviously at home in a controlled environment. The girls text a friend saying "heard you've got chicken pox, sorry you can't come to the party, we'll catch up soon" - I'm paraphrasing obviously. The girl with chicken pox said she was coming anyway. And when the rest of the girls pointed out this was really dangerous the family reported them to the school and dragged them through the bullying process.

It was awful. People are awful. Surely when a child is clearly seriously ill your heart goes out to them and you want to support them. Who thinks "this is an inconvenience for me"

bostonkremekrazy · 07/06/2017 13:45

I wouldnt keep giving her dirty looks - I'd go to reception and ask to remove them.
Children with chicken pox should be home.
sorry to read of your Ds.

ItsNotFairLois · 07/06/2017 13:48

YADNBU! Stupid woman shouldn't have brought them out of there is a possibility they are still infectious! Your poor DS and you, hope he will be ok and congratulations on finishing his treatment! My DS and another little boy caught them after a woman came into the doctors with her son and let him come up to them and start touching them and playing with them before saying come away you might have chicken pox Angry my DS ended up absolutely covered in spots for 2 weeks and the other little boy had to miss some jabs! Some people are inconsiderate and don't care about others!

How the hell did she get in with infectious kids? What were the staff thinking?

Hope your little boy is better soon.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2017 14:00

I'd have reported them to reception. Stupid bitch of a woman.

BenguinsMummy · 07/06/2017 14:02

The soft play area is unstaffed, we are at a holiday villiagectype place (think pontins etc) she is more than likely a private owner... we booked here and were told at booking not to come if exposed to anything infectious... this woman clearly has no brains....

OP posts:
Rockaby · 07/06/2017 14:05

Yanbu. She sounds incredibly selfish and ignorant. People often are re chicken pox ime though. It's just too inconvenient for them to stay at home, so they go out and risk it - trouble is they're risking the health of other people. Selfish pricks.

gunsandbanjos · 07/06/2017 14:10

YADNBU, what a dumbass bint she is. Hope your son doesn't suffer any side effects from her selfish actions.

theredjellybean · 07/06/2017 14:10

I also think she was being incredibly selfish. I am a gp and advice parents not to take chicken pox infected children anywhere were there might be immunocompromised people. I usually say if they are going sit crazy at home then go out to a large open space such as a park and go for a run around away from others !

However I would also say that taking a child who is immunocompromised to a holiday park may not have been ideal either because there are non staffed areas where other people who may not be aware of your little one's issues could bring there germs ! and inevitably a lot of other children around with normal childhood viruses etc that may be very dangerous for your son.

Anyway , i do hope your son enjoyed his holiday and it didnt upset you all too much

unfortunateevents · 07/06/2017 14:15

YANBU. However, if your son is immune-compromised I think a ball pond in a soft play is probably the worst place he could be. Have you never read any of the reports on how filthy those places are and how many germs they harbour? I think in a holiday park in general you are potentially exposed to all sorts of bacteria and unless you have done your own cleaning when you arrived, you can't even be certain that your accommodation has been properly cleaned before you arrived or that the people who left perhaps only hours before you did not have colds or something more serious.

ohfourfoxache · 07/06/2017 14:15

Selfish bitch Shock

Hope your DS avoids coming down with anything Thanks
