To not want my human rights torn up?

I thought we weren't going to let them change the way we live?

"Especially being as they had intelligence on several of the terrorists but not the resources to back them up."

I think you're confusing MI5 and the specialist counter-terrorism police - both of which have had their numbers increased - with general police.

olliegarchy99 · 07/06/2017 07:38

you
the term 'rip up' was guardian speak - not the truth
very childish to accuse conservative voters as not being human - nice Shock
I trust the BBC for the correct information
www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-40181444

really OP - the UK version of the human rights act (not the ECHR) does not allow deportation or scrutiny of suspected potential terrorists. We who are law-abiding have a right to feel safe and those who wish to harm us should lose some of those rights.

OohMavis · 07/06/2017 07:38

All the slagging off of people who might vote conservative, just makes me want to vote for them.

Seriously? Why not just think for yourself?

If you hear people slagging off One Direction do you go and buy their album?

PacificDogwod · 07/06/2017 07:39

Does this really need posting here?

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller (who died in a concentration camp)

Ratonastick · 07/06/2017 07:41

I agree. Human rights legislation protects all of us, anti terrorism legislation is extensive and thorough but not used. Let's use the law we have and give the police and security services the resources that they told the government they needed. Most countries have human rights protection in law, I'm not sure that we want to join the list that doesn't.

And more importantly, the Good Friday Agreement specifically refers to ECHR and associated legislation. I don't think that ripping that up will necessarily help the fight against terrorism.

Blandings · 07/06/2017 07:43

YANBU OP.

And as for user1471545174, do you remember Amber Rudd's speech at the Tory party conference in October? Echo's of Mein Kampf with her lists of foreign workers.

I'm not suggesting the Tory party is the Nazi party but a party that can seriously thing this was a good idea before backtracking hastily after the public outcry, is not one I trust to protect my human rights once the legislation has been cut.

Such pathetic dramatic words from a poor leader. The desperation is palpable.

Blandings · 07/06/2017 07:43

*think not thing!

Buck3t · 07/06/2017 07:44

User Nazi Germany was not Nazi Germany before it became Nazi Germany. It was just Germany. But slowly and surely rights got ripped away and a particular set of people were blamed for the country's ills. To blindly walk into that without seeing a correlation, I think is missguided.

Buck3t · 07/06/2017 07:46

Anyone remember when you were protected in employment after just one year's service? I do. Now it's two years, and no legal aid. It starts with the little things.

Ceto · 07/06/2017 07:47

Theresa May has always had a thing about human rights, but her incredibly shaky grasp of the subject was graphically illustrated by that ridiculous speech where she took it as gospel that someone had escaped being deported because he had a cat. She hasn't actually bothered to try to master the facts any better subsequently. It's a sound-bite that plays to the dimmer section of the Mail reading population, who seem to close their eyes and ears to the fact that human rights protect them just as much as everyone else.

PacificDogwod · 07/06/2017 07:47

Actually, I am of the opinion that TM's statements are about short term vote gain rather than a well though through anti-terrorist strategy: it appeals because it is oh so simple. Lets just beef up the security services rights and they'll get them bastards!
It just is not as simple as all that, scary as that thought is.

WeakAndUnstable · 07/06/2017 07:48

YANBU.

I'm a born and bred Brit.

But I've lived in a country where the leader spouted the same spiel as May and managed to erode human rights for ordinary people in a very short space of time. It was horrifying.

It's deeply troubling to see the same thing now being attempted by a government in the UK.

It's even sadder to see about half of this country's electorate sitting around like nodding dog toys allowing, condoning even, this way forward...with the naivety that this doesn't apply to them.

ColossalKalamari · 07/06/2017 07:48

Posting Martin Niemollers poem is ridiculous...i personally don't give a fuck if they come for the terrorist or terrorist sympathisers. If you don't break the law what are you afraid of? This isn't Nazi Germany although people seem to like drawing that comparison at the moment

YouTheCat · 07/06/2017 07:50

Learn from history.

PacificDogwod · 07/06/2017 07:50

No, it's not ridiculous.

They can already come for terrorists/sympathiser, no new laws are required for that.

As stated very astutely above Nazi Germany did not just pop up out of thin air, it started out as just Germany.
Of course the Tories are not Nazis, however the slow eroding of citizens' rights does worry me.

Ratonastick · 07/06/2017 07:51

Colossal - you've got it in one. "If they break the law". The law exists, the law is already here and they are breaking it. Therefore let's get on with enforcing the law not ripping up protection for all of us.

Personally I am very attached to my enshrined and protected religious freedom as I am not a Christian.

PacificDogwod · 07/06/2017 07:51

Learn from history.

Never happens Sad

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 07/06/2017 07:52

I knew this was coming.
And I also knew that, rather handily for TM and co, people like User will be doing all their hard work for them, telling us if we aren't happy to have our rights stripped away, then we are terrorist sympathisers/traitors.

The Tories cut the police resources, which is what would have helped prevent the recent attacks.
What would not have helped is a rushed legislation removing some basic freedoms from everyone.

I am very worried by this.

It is incredibly naive to think it won't be applied elsewhere.

How long is it before legitimate and legal anti-government protests get shut down using the same laws?

What if they start using these laws against environmental activists, disabled rights activists, animal rights people, and anti- government groups??

The "First they came for" poem is utterly applicable and appropiate here.

Crumbs1 · 07/06/2017 07:53

It was a dreadful sound bite to appeal to WWC/UKIP/Daily Mail reader and gain their votes.
She was Home Secretary, for goodness sake and oversaw the decimation of community policing through savage cuts. The youth service no longer exists. These acts are creating an environment where extremism can thrive unchecked.
I can't see which part of the Human Rights Act impacts on terrorism more than the unlimited sale of arms to the Middle East.

There was and is no basis for her comments other than electioneering.

PacificDogwod · 07/06/2017 07:53

I would hate to be a young Muslim male in this country just now tbh.

GraceGrape · 07/06/2017 07:54

YANBU. And some of the responses on this thread show why they will probably be able to get away with it.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 07/06/2017 07:54

Colossal we already have the laws, just not the police to enforce them properly.

And as I said above, what if they start using it against entirely legitimate protest groups?

What if they use it to shut down legitimate protest?

Orangetoffee · 07/06/2017 07:55
