Mr Tickle

Just read this to my 3yo. I vaguely remember it as a fun little story about tickling in a naughty way and with some sort of moral to it. But actually it now reads as sinister and mean. There's no comeuppance for all the chaos he caused.
Also, my sensitive 3yo is gonna have nightmares about inescapable tickle arms tonight. Sigh.
We read Mr Messy the other day. He gets kidnapped by two sinistermen in suits with very poor grammar. Who do unspeakable things to him in the bathroom.
Aibu to think the Mr Men books are pretty rubbish and not the sort of messages I want to read to my ds?
(I guess I could use them as examples to explain the PANTS rules)....

I want what Mr Uppity's on Grin

The Fat Controller is downright terrifying.

twattymctwatterson · 06/06/2017 23:26

Mr greedy gets force fed a giant's breakfast until he's ill. It's like something from the movie Seven

RtHonMistress · 06/06/2017 23:30

Or the bit in Matilda where Mrs Trunchbull makes the fat boy eat the cake in front of the whole school..

Applesandpears23 · 06/06/2017 23:41

I loved them as a child but they are awful and I won't read them to my daughter now. Some awful messages in them.

Knittedfrog · 06/06/2017 23:48

I love them! Sorry, but I just do.

userofthiswebsite · 06/06/2017 23:53

I'm going against the grain but...
I always loved the Mr Men books. I remember reading them myself when little. There was one about Mr Greedy sitting in a doctor's room and in the drawer, the doctor had some cake (or some similar snack), if memory serves. I'm impressed I remember that.
My fave was Mr Bump as I was a tad clumsy as a child, but grew out of that thankfully.
Also enjoyed Thomas the tank. Maybe partly why it's my fave name for a boy - the connection with the train stories makes it seem quite wholesome.

Percy didn't want to go out in the rain and ruin his paint so the fat controller had builders brick up the tunnel and leave him in there.

Actually I think you will find it was Henry that got shut in the tunnel. I have no idea how I still know thatBlushGrin

Glad it's not just me who thinks the me men books are massively over rated. Dc mostly get them read to them at their grandparents house. Occasionally dc1 brings one home from nursery.

They're just boring and bland and some of the storylines are a bit odd.

Just had a look at those amazon reviews and clearly I have not been thinking hard enough about these books.
I'm gonna go for a complete about face and use them to teach my sheltered pfb about the hardships minority folk face, how life sometimes just ain't fair, and most importantly how to compose a sentence properly.

My ds loves all things Mr and we know all the books well. They are a bit crazy if you really think about it, but the moment that stands out for me is when "Mr jelly" taught my ds about "tramps, guns, war and murder"!

MrsKoala · 07/06/2017 15:23

i read Mr Jelly the other day with Shock face. i kept having to replace words.

I actually burst out laughing when i saw the mr men show and all seemed British apart from Mr Rude who is French. I even called DH to laugh at how out of order it was. Grin

TheWhiteRoseOfYork · 07/06/2017 15:36

DS was horrified at Mr Tidy & Mr Neat (all a bit Reservoir Dogs) smartening up Mr Messy.

I always loved Mr Messy the way he was. Mr Neat & Mr Tidy can just fuck off.

iklboo · 07/06/2017 16:33

RevEm · 12/06/2017 15:17

Yes, the are sinister... and yes explain the pants rule because it's important they learn to respect personal space. Unlike that devil, Mr Tickle...

KarenCBC · 13/06/2017 12:34

We've recently been gifted one of the newer ones, Mr Adventure, which has a terrible message. Basically Mr Adventure's fondness for travelling the world should be quashed! No more visiting remote islands or climbing mountains for him. Far better to stay at home!?!? As natural travellers by nature and profession, DH and I cannot stand this book. Who in this day and age thought that was a great idea for a children's story?!?!

Mothervulva · 13/06/2017 12:46

Those amazon reviews are excellent.

I feel the curse of Mr Men; only today my 2 and 3 year old chose a new one each...
The storylines are piss poor and I have to moderate the language 'You're too fat! Lose some weight!' Shouted Miss Bossy. Hmm
So, yeah, thanks for reintroducing those to my life Mil.

HoopsMcCann · 13/06/2017 12:51

Mr Greedy always makes me smirk..
