Mr Tickle

Just read this to my 3yo. I vaguely remember it as a fun little story about tickling in a naughty way and with some sort of moral to it. But actually it now reads as sinister and mean. There's no comeuppance for all the chaos he caused.
Also, my sensitive 3yo is gonna have nightmares about inescapable tickle arms tonight. Sigh.
We read Mr Messy the other day. He gets kidnapped by two sinistermen in suits with very poor grammar. Who do unspeakable things to him in the bathroom.
Aibu to think the Mr Men books are pretty rubbish and not the sort of messages I want to read to my ds?
(I guess I could use them as examples to explain the PANTS rules)....

There was a glaswegian guy on the last leg a couple of weeks ago (cant remember his name) but he made a new bullshit button and it said thomas the wank engine Grin i laughed way more than i should of haha

For some reason the one I remember was Mr Uppity and came across this as a review. Says it all really. *Class War mixed up with the goblins, this book has it all.

Mr Uppity is just asking for a fall: a monocle and top hat? Who does he think he is? Chris Eubank?

Having taken some mindbending drug (the book doesn't mention that, but it's obvious to the reader) Mr Uppity sees a goblin in his garden.

Cue a very Alice in Wonderland moment and he's whisked off to see the Goblin King, who warns him about his future conduct.

Coming down from his trip, slowly he learns his lesson, and changes his errant ways.

A very moral story: treat people well, without a kind word and friendship all the money in the world means nothing. Oh and don't eat those dodgy mushrooms!*

The theme tune to the cartoon in the 70s was really distinctive and catchy. I think it's changed now to something crappy and bland.

Ds2 (2.5) loves the Mr Men books too. Read Mr cheeky tonight. He goes round calling the other characters names like tubby (Mr greedy) and four eyes (little miss neat). Not sure I want him learning those names even though he probably doesn't understand what they mean.
I do like Mr bump though! He had small accidents, medium sized accidents and big accidents, lots and lots of accidents! Ds lIves that bit!

*loves

Wait til you read Mr Rude. It had my 2yo shouting 'oi fatty' on a loop. Luckily not directed at anyone in particular yet

Nowthereistwo · 06/06/2017 21:59

I think the Little Miss books are worse than the Mr Men. It's like they couldn't even be bothered to think of any interesting storylines. My nearly 4yr old dd is obsessed with them - unfortunately

AntiopeofThemyscira · 06/06/2017 22:01

Mr Messy was the favourite here. I read that book every night for a year

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 06/06/2017 22:03

MR jelly rocks and we won't have a word said against him
'Oh calamity ' Grin

Angrybird123 · 06/06/2017 22:03

My nearly 8 year old still loves the Mr men and all.modern permutations of. I agree that Thomas is twisted. The whole steamie / diesel thing is closet racism and it's all about one upmanship and winning.

Wolfiefan · 06/06/2017 22:05

I always wanted Mr Tickle's arms. He can lie in bed and reach downstairs for a biscuit. He doesn't have to get out of bed. How bloody awesome is that! Grin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 06/06/2017 22:06

Yeah KC 😂

The originals are quite funny but the little miss series are not written by Roger and are shit

And Mr Fussy! And Mr Thin

DS was horrified at Mr Tidy & Mr Neat (all a bit Reservoir Dogs) smartening up Mr Messy.

Thegiantofillinois · 06/06/2017 22:11

As a messy person, I have lots of issues with the Mr Messy storyline. The Mr Skinny is bizarre too-the fat doctor sends him to Mr Greedy to learn to eat crap.Hmm

Thegiantofillinois · 06/06/2017 22:13

Dh likes to read the 'alternative' versions. I suspect they include lots of farting.

DoJo · 06/06/2017 22:15

I love the fact that in the new TV shows (called the Mr Men Show, I believe), Mr Rude is French, and his rudeness mainly appears to take the form of saying things in a French accent.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/06/2017 22:29

I couldn't miss a comma when reading them, never mind whole lines.
It was amusing reading them pissed in an Eddie Izzard voice brightened them up no end.

carrotcakecupcake · 06/06/2017 22:31

Oh jeez, DS is just getting into the Mr Men books and I wish I'd never introduced them. Mr Stong eating eggs is the funniest thing ever, as is Mr Chatterbox (which I read as fast as I possibly can).
I think the PP who called the fat controller EA is spot on. I think the book about Trevor (the tractor) is particularly odd.

OwlinaTree · 06/06/2017 22:39

Always pleased to have a chance to link to these book reviews of the Mr Men books. Grin

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 06/06/2017 22:50

My DC loved them when they were little. They're 10 and 12 now and this thread has made me a little nostalgic

The Charlie and Lola books were the ones I hated reading at bedtime. Mr men books were a dream in comparison

TheFallenMadonna · 06/06/2017 22:54

I love them. They were extraordinarily convenient for bedtime reading.

SatsumasAndFrazzles · 06/06/2017 22:59

You beat me to it owl!

I do not like Mr Tickle. No sense of boundaries or personal space. Mr Bump has always been the favourite of both me and my partner, which is how I know we are meant to be. I always hear it in Arthur Lowe's voice.

PlymouthMaid1 · 06/06/2017 23:06

Love the Amazon review. I had forgotten how dull those books were until I had the misfortune off picking Miss Chatterbox to read to my granddaughter.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/06/2017 23:11

The bossy boots in Little Miss Bossy (why has no-one mentioned the Little Miss Books?) were fabulous. Well thought out and very clever.
I loved reading it to dc1, and they loved it too whilst never getting the parallel between themselves and the character in the book. 😄

elQuintoConyo · 06/06/2017 23:18

I just love these...
