to think getting up early isn't an indication of moral superiority?

I do get up early most days (between 6 and 6:30am) so I have time to walk the dog and go to the gym before my long commute to work or so I get more time to work when I work from home. But I've never seen this as some kind of positive side to my character or indication of my moral superiority. I just do it because it's practical for my life.

My mother, however, is of the opinion that people who "lounge around" in bed until 7 or 8am are lazy bastards who don't know that they're missing the best time of the day. When she comes to stay on weekends she'll stand at my living room window first thing (say about 8-8:30am) commenting on all the drawn curtains and the lazy buggers asleep when they could be cracking on with accomplishing things.

This is a very odd attitude to me but I've found quite a few people in my life share this perspective. Am I being unreasonable? Or am I, in fact, morally superior because of my early mornings Grin?

It bothers me because i grew up in a family of early birds. I grew up being called lazy. Forced out of bed early even on Sunday's when I didnt have to be anywhere.

The early birds in my family slept for at least 2 hours every night on the. sofa before bed. I remained awake and slept an extra couple of hours in bed but i was lazy?!

They forced me up so fucking often but i never forced them to stay awake late or woke them up from their 2 hour naps every night.

Westray out of 5 pages of posts why the fuck single me out for criticism?

Westray · 06/06/2017 22:49

freeniki- why so angry?

Westray · 06/06/2017 22:55

mewkins- maybe because we are all different people?

Some like the summer, lazy hazy days, some love winter, with sharp frosts and cool winds.

I love mornings, I like to watch the dawn, I love the freshness of the morning, dew on he grass, watch the sunrise, hear the birds wake. I like shopping when produce is fresh and shops are quiet.
I like to hang laundry outside early so it has all day to dry.
I like the peace, the stillness, the empty roads. I am up at 6.30 even on a Sunday.

I am sure there are many things that night owls love about late night too- but it's not my bag. But I accept we are all different.

No moral judgement to be made.

user1495915742 · 06/06/2017 23:03

No, it's not and anyone who is like this is a total and utter bore.

Who cares if other people are still in bed at 8am on a Saturday morning. Perhaps they have worked a 60 hour week?

Has your Mum always been judgemental?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 06/06/2017 23:14

I am an early riser but I would never dream of commenting on someone who was a night owl. I love the early morning, I love photography and love the light at both ends of the day but particularly the morning light, I also love walking when no-one else is about. Shift work has screwed up my already delicate body clock, years and years of listening out for my kids' silent asthma means I sleep in two hour chunks before waking up and amble round the house until I can get a bit more sleep. I would love to have a solid eight hours every now and then but it evades me so I get up when it gets light and go to bed when it gets dark in the summer. My kids are both night owls but I would never dream of disturbing their lay-ins when they lived with me, each to their own I say.

Ilikecheeriosyum · 06/06/2017 23:25

Apparently it IS correlated with your outlook on life, but i definitely does not mean you are lazy,

It seems to directly correlate with sadness,

The sadder you are, the more sleep you need,

Those who find waking up early in the mornings are subconsciously more excited about life!
More likely to be optimistic and less likely to suffer with mental illness.

I can definitely testify to this and i know others with depression who's sleeping schedule wildly increased and often changed to staying up late and getting up later. Once I recovered it was MUCH easier to get up in the mornings. And it would explain why it's much easier (for children in particular) to get up on the weekend than in the week!

Ilikecheeriosyum · 06/06/2017 23:26

*waking up in the mornings EASIER

Oh dear missed out the whole point!

FreeNiki · 06/06/2017 23:40

Symptoms of depression are worse in the morning though. Much worse.

So do people who sleep late get depression because of the late sleeping or do they sleep late because they are depressed?

I slept very very late when depressed. Now Im not depressed not so late.

crazywriter · 06/06/2017 23:52

Your DM would hate me. I am far more productive at 3am than at 7am and will regularly stay up late if I can. My body clock is a mess though as I do try to get up before 6am for the gym some days. The curtains can stay shut throughout the say though because of the sun through the window as we're in a south facing flat.

Madbum · 07/06/2017 00:02

Lazy bastarding is my favourite activity, I actually make time for myself to be a lazy bastard. It's the best 👌🏻

Literally PMSL Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/06/2017 00:11

YANBU. Unless I'm working, I rarely get up before 11. Usually after 12.

I'm a night owl and I fucking hate mornings.

TheEmmaDilemma · 07/06/2017 00:42

Who the hell gets out of a nice comfy bed when they don't have to?

I also love lazy bastarding, and plan for it with ensuring appropriate amounts of food, drinks and fags, should I want to snack, smoke and go back to bed.

FreeNiki · 07/06/2017 01:21

Lazy bastarding is going to be my new verb.

gluteustothemaximus · 07/06/2017 01:32

My parents called me lazy for years.

Even when I lived on my own, they would knock on the door early on the weekend to make sure I wasn't having a lie in. I shit you not.

Had a row. He called me lazy. I said I'd worked another 60 hour week, he still said I was lazy.

I let my kids lie in. DH and I love a lie in. We work hard, and I don't need to be anywhere on the weekend at 7am.

We don't see parents anymore either... bliss...

SunEgg · 07/06/2017 01:44

Yanbu. My mother in law thinks the same and I couldnt care less now Grin

toffeeboffin · 07/06/2017 02:04

I don't see why people think it's lazy? You could get up at 6am then just lounge around not doing anything anyway? May as well be in bed.

It's a bit like people saying boring people go to bed early.. Because you can't have fun before 10pm, you know Hmm

OlennasWimple · 07/06/2017 02:15

I don't think of getting up earlier as morally superior (I'm naturally a night owl), but I do feel slightly smug if I manage to get up and do lots of productive things before the sun comes up

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/06/2017 02:42

Anyone else seeing dawn in from the other side?

The best part about being a genuine chronic insomniac is that you have a justifiable reason for being in bed at lunchtime. But even when I am not in an insomnia cycle, I will still be awake until 2/3am and go back to bed after the school run and I can just cite the insomnia if anyone questions it.

haveacupoftea · 07/06/2017 03:35

I've seen days I haven't got out of bed for the day til 5pm. But I make sure and venture downstairs first thing to draw the curtains so my neighbours don't catch on what a lazy slattern I am Blush

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/06/2017 03:53

But I make sure and venture downstairs first thing to draw the curtains so my neighbours don't catch on what a lazy slattern I am.

The curtains in my house are always closed, regardless of the time I get up. I suffer with migraines and it's way too bright to have them open. I don't give a fuck what my neighbours think Grin

SuperBeagle · 07/06/2017 04:51

I've never slept later than 8am in my life. Not an exaggeration.

But I don't think I'm "morally superior" Hmm I just go to bed early and get up early. It's how I've been since birth, essentially.

NewPapaGuinea · 07/06/2017 05:46

I get up at 5am everyday (for the gym) and find it sets my day off on a good start. Feel like I'm more productive and relaxed throughout the rest of the day. I got up at 9am last Saturday and felt the day was constantly getting away from me.

Mind you, I am back in bed, have had a cup of tea and am planning three more hours of snoozery.
