To wear this dress to an interview on a rainy day *PHOTO*

Does this look too 'summery and loud' (my mum's words) for the weather today (it's horribly rainy and windy here)? Planned to wear with dark tights and Dr Marten's shoes. And the job is casual teaching in Higher Ed.

It's perfect, long sleeves make it not too summery.

Good luck.

sleepingdragons · 06/06/2017 09:26

I love it :)

I wish I worked somewhere you could interview in Doc Martens! My job is really stuffy.

Orangebird69 · 06/06/2017 09:27

It's fine. If the background was a paler colour then maybe not but as it's black then no problem. Good luck with the interview!

Almondbrew · 06/06/2017 09:27

NO not professional smart casual enough, I wouldn't. What else have you got?

astoundedgoat · 06/06/2017 09:28

Perfect. It's an interview, not a wake. Grin Good luck!

RiversrunWoodville · 06/06/2017 09:29

Ooh I think it's lovely was expecting something pale but that's perfect. Good luck with the interview

Elledouble · 06/06/2017 09:31

I like it. Is it long enough?

I'm wearing my Doc Marten shoes today too Grin

Almondbrew · 06/06/2017 09:33

Are you teaching an art related subject OP? If not I have to go against the trend and say that doc martins, as much as I like them myself, and a vivid poppy dress are not the best outfit for an interview in HE.

Ducks and runs off.

Good luck with your job hunt whatever you decide to wear.

theymademejoin · 06/06/2017 09:46

I don't think Doc Martens would be appropriate, unless, al almond brew says, it's an arty subject. You might be able to get away with the dress if you wear reasonably dressy, dark shoes and tights. It's hard to say though, with the dress on hanger. Do you have a pic of it being worn?

theymademejoin · 06/06/2017 09:47

as almondbrew, not al almondbrew

Itsgettingbetter · 06/06/2017 09:52

Thanks for the replies. The footwear I mentioned are the Dr Marten shoes not the boots.

it's lovely,

nannybeach · 06/06/2017 09:54

nice dress but too casual for interview

Itsgettingbetter · 06/06/2017 09:54

Oh and the material is not thin, but 'sturdy'. It's a vintage dress.

Should perhaps also mention that I'm a PhD student and it is a 10 minute interview being given by my department

I think it looks great for the kind of role you're going for. Perfect.

Loopytiles · 06/06/2017 09:57

Dress is fine, DMs not IMO.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/06/2017 10:01

Perfect ! Good luck.😀

blueshoes · 06/06/2017 10:01

I don't think the outfit you describe is the best thing you can wear for any interview. Your interviewers will either love it (hopefully because they see a kindred spirit) or might remember you more for your outfit. Either way, it is your outfit talking not you.

I would go for something in more neutral colours.

To be safe, for an interview, you should dress slightly more formally than someone in your role would dress. The candidates who want to be taken seriously tend to.

theymademejoin · 06/06/2017 10:02

You'll probably get away with it then as they already know you. However, if you have a different pair of shoes, I would wear them (I had presumed the shoes, not boots!)

Topsy44 · 06/06/2017 10:03

I think the dress looks lovely but personally, I'd ditch the dm's.

viques · 06/06/2017 10:05

My opinion is that it is always a good idea to wear something striking to an interview, it is possibly the only interview advantage women have over men !

First thing is it makes you appear confident to the panel and will unsettle other candidates if you have group activities or run into them in the waiting area, secondly if the panel are interviewing a number of people I think it helps them to have a memorable hook to remember you by.

That dress looks great. good luck.

Roomster101 · 06/06/2017 10:05

It's too loud for an interview. If they already know you it won't make much difference but otherwise it might not give the right impression.

Almondbrew · 06/06/2017 10:06

"Should perhaps also mention that I'm a PhD student and it is a 10 minute interview being given by my department" I suppose the interview panel already know you and your usual style. If your subject is a sort of 'alternative' one (maybe art & design, ethnography etc.) then the outfit actually is fine! For more traditional subjects I'd go a bit more smart casual personally. However if this is one of those interviews where you are earmarked for the job and they know you and your style already the outfit may work!!

iseenodust · 06/06/2017 10:17

I like the dress but wonder how tall you are? Nothing worse than sitting on an interview chair with no table and trying to pull a dress down to cover your thighs a bit more. If you love your thighs go for it !
