I've just realised I'm julienning carrots and cucumber for the moppets to dip in organic bloody hummus while admiring my shiny new bottle of craft gin.

Then I realised that they probally wont eat their fish fingers and chips now, and I spent all day mumsnetting so the house is a shit tip!

Feel free to add your own Grin

No, the height of middle class pretension was reached by the dear lady/gentleman who placed a packet of fig and horseradish flavoured organic kale chips in the donations box for the local food bank

That's not middle class pretension, it's just donating some bloody food.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/06/2017 14:44

No if it was just donating food it would be salt and vinegar or plain.

I know one should not assume anyone getting food from a food bank would not want or like something a bit exotic or esoteric but the market (whether buying them or getting them free) for fig and horseradish ( a bizarre combination anyway) kale crisps is limited.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/06/2017 14:51

So it was an unusual flavour of crisps. Can't see how that makes it 'middle class' or 'pretentious'. Confused

Coddiwomple · 10/06/2017 15:01

Mocking donations to a food banks is really not clever.
It put people off giving for a start, it rudely assumes that being poor means you don't know anything else than baked beans and rubbish food.

It's one thing to gently advise to give food that is quickly prepared, can be preserved safely etc, but smirking because someone tries to do something nice is just sad.
There was a thread on this forum awhile ago, it was horrendous and it's people who do need it that will lose out.

Only if you are some militant middle class mum who has an intense 'schedule of educational activities' for her toddler.

Ballet or theatre classes must be in there somewhere.

HarHer · 10/06/2017 18:16

Coddiwomple, I'm not mocking, merely observing. Now, this is where I get on my high horse, middle-class pretension is a luxury that many of us, even on MN cannot afford and it is something that I find particularly vile. This is not because I have been a recipient of food bank donations, nor because I can't tell the difference between a 'juliened' carrot and a grated parsnip, but rather because people in this country get so wrapped up in such superficial nonsense about 'class-based' behaviour that they become blind to the real issues. Food banks exist because some people cannot afford to feed their families; homeless shelters exist because some people have nowhere to live; yet a significant proportion of people (or so it would seem) obsess about the expensive trivia of keeping up appearances.
So no, I do not berate the individual who placed the organic kale chips in the food bank donations; I berate a succession of governments who have forced people to rely on good will and charity to meet their basic needs.

I am delurking for the first time ever to report that I just had to open the door to the Ocado man whilst post-coital and clad only in my father-in-law's silk smoking jacket.

Had you been shagging your FIL ivanovals Shock Hmm ???!!!

RhiWrites · 11/06/2017 23:24

My sister's best friend was visiting and told us her kids "don't eat middle class food". She did mean kale crisps and humous. I found that pretty funny.

The most middle class thing I've ever done is bring fungi porcini dried mushrooms to a cookout at Reading Festival. We ate very well that year.

tigerskinrug · 12/06/2017 01:05

I'm wondering in what world pain au chocolat, brioche, Costa and Starbucks is considered MC? The first two are budget foods in supermarket and can be bought for £1 (for a pack!) in supermarkets. Costa and Starbucks are a step up from the Tesco cafe but are hardly 'posh' Hmm

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 12/06/2017 02:45

Rhi,

Took 'shrooms into Reading Festival?

Porcini, you say?

We believe you.

RhiWrites · 12/06/2017 13:02

Hah! Thalia! Grin I promise it was unadulterated with illicits. We made vegetarian chilli with soya mince and afore mentioned mushrooms. I think someone brought balsamic vinegar for our salads.
