To consider sterilisation

I'm 30, have 3 children aged 8 months - 5 years and don't want any more.
Has anyone else been sterilised and had any ill effects?
Husband wanted vasectomy but we cannot afford to pay privately.

I had my falopian tubes removed a few months ago. It is brilliant!

Auchan · 05/06/2017 12:18

I have had mine removed for other reasons than specifically for both control but it is a wonderful side effect!!

Crunchymum · 05/06/2017 12:20

Why can't your DH have it on NHS?

Crunchymum · 05/06/2017 12:20

I really need to look into this for after my pregnancy actually.

BurntBum · 05/06/2017 12:21

No, have had both tubes removed and no side effects. My periods are much heavier (wasn't on hormonal contraception before) but I think this is due to perimenopause.

Ravenblack · 05/06/2017 12:22

I don't want to generalize, but out of 7 women I know who were sterilised in their 30's (one in her late 20's,) all but one had to have a hysterectomy within 5-7 years for various reasons.

Not something I would want to do. Can your DH get a vasectomy? Much easier and better than female sterilisation.

Cantseethewoods · 05/06/2017 12:23

My gynaecologist refused to do it when I was 37 and had 2 kids as she thought I was too young and might change my mind. I haven't, and have had a mirena for the last 5 years, which has been fine, but still annoying not to be thought to know one's own mind.

I guess the question is, if you and your DH split up, would you want another if you met someone else. I knew definitely not, but may be worth thinking about.

MrsJayy · 05/06/2017 12:24

Best decision i ever made people can say your partner should just have a vasectomy which is fine but taking charge of your own fertility is liberating imo

Branleuse · 05/06/2017 12:29

ive been sterilised. It was fine. In and out the same day. Havent had any problems at all.

quickquestion2017 · 05/06/2017 12:35

Thanks for the replies so far!
Vasectomies are no longer available on the NHS and we have been quoted £400 for it.

Whatever you decide dont go for thatEasure (i think it is called) read terrible things about it.

runninggranny · 05/06/2017 12:39

I was sterilised 30 years ago. In those days the minimum age was 30. I went to hospital in the morning and came out that evening. It was a keyhole proscedure. 2 tiny cuts if I remember rightly (one in the groin and on near the navel) Can't see them at all. I have had no problems at all and have never regretted it. As the tubes are tied off there is no impact on your hormonal system. So this should not be the reason for heavy periods, hysterectomies or difficult perimenopause/menopause. I sailed through mine, but can't blame it on the tubes. :-)

wornoutboots · 05/06/2017 12:50

erm... since whan is vasectomy not available on the nhs?
my husband had it at the end of April on the NHS.

divadee · 05/06/2017 12:52

I am looking into this as my family is done and my consultant and midwife have said I should be done as it might kill me next time (this time was touch and go). So I have to listen and condoms with my partner are getting on my nerves and we have had a fallen off condom as well gahhh.

I would have my tubes tied as I don't trust the essure (I think it is) too many people with problems from that.

isseywithcats · 05/06/2017 12:56

i was sterilised after sprog number 3 , 35 years ago had no problems whatsoever since, mine was cut and cauterise, and have not had one day of my life where i have regretted it

BurntBum · 05/06/2017 12:59

My BIL just had a vasectomy done at his GP's surgery and was free on NHS.

WasabiNell · 05/06/2017 13:00

Might depend on area worn. Each trust is funded differently and there's massive geographical differences in services offered.

MrsJayy · 05/06/2017 13:01

I think somenhs trusts are not offering vasectomies i am sure i have read this somewhere,

QuietNinjaTardis · 05/06/2017 13:05

I've been sterilised. Had it done when I was 33. I was so unwell with my pregnancies there's no way I'm doing again. I don't want to be on hormonal contraception until menopause so thought it was a good way to get it done and dusted. Dh didn't want the snip so I've had my tubes clipped.
No issues. Was sore for about 5 days after which was a bit longer than I was expecting but apart from that it's been fine. So nice not having to worry.

wornoutboots · 05/06/2017 14:19

I'd have thought offering vasectomy would work out cheaper for the NHS than dealing with unwanted pregnancies etc... ah well.

KanielOutis · 05/06/2017 15:13

I was sterilised 7 years ago, age 23, during the Caesarian of my second baby. It's great and I don't regret it. In hindsight it was young, but I have not had a single urge for another baby since so the decision was right.

picklemepopcorn · 05/06/2017 15:15

I'm shocked they aren't offering vasectomies! But are still offering the far more invasive sterilisation of women?

You may find you aren't eligible OP, as you are so young.

wheresthel1ght · 05/06/2017 15:27

My sterilisation is booked for later this month. I ate 30'sand went in asking for a hysterectomy for a variety of reason. I have been refused but as I cannot tolerate hormonal contraception this is the starting point.

I will be continuing to request the full works are removed

Oblomov17 · 05/06/2017 15:43

Sterilised mid 30's after 2 ds's. Diabetic, so pregnancies hard. Minimal recovery. Best thing I ever did.

DimplesToadfoot · 05/06/2017 15:43

I was 26 when I was steralised, I haven't regretted it for one moment in regards to the fact I've had no more 'accidents' .. my kids dad had a vasectomy lying bastard

However over the years when I've had problems (nothing to do with being steralised) and my docs have recommended things like the pill/coil/implant etc to help me, I've been denied it as the NHS refuse to fund it as I've been steralised, whoever decides the funding obviously thinks the pill/coil/implant etc are just for contraception and my health and wellbeing has suffered for it, however if I were to move 50 miles to a different funding body I could get it ..

so beware unexpected side effects or check the area you live in, however if I went back in time and had the decision to make again, I'd go with sterlisation every time
