Ds (16) got a job in a well known high street shop for the first time. He was over the moon but I'm a nervous wreck about him traveling ATM. His first day is tomorrow and we live in the Richmond upon Thames borough. So a long travel too. Aibu?

I just tried to calculate how many journeys have been taken on the tube since 7/7 and did you know it is up to 5 million journeys a day? My calculator and brain cannot even work out the total. The probability of a car accident would be far, far higher.

Sorry if he is travelling by car btw, I haven't RTFT but was looking at this in response to the woman feeling nervous in the tube, which seems to have disappeared

I always hear this. More chance being in a car crash then....
Like a plane crash or terror attack. But imo someone would have a higher chance of survival rate in car crash then the others. Something I Always think about.

You think Richmond to ox st is long??!!

user1484615313 · 06/06/2017 23:43

I live in the borough of Richmond. Not actually in Richmond. So he still has to travel with the bus to Richmond station. That takes about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. Then has to get the train to oxford st. So it takes him a good two hours travel one way.

That does seem a long journey.

Considering Richmond is a London commuter town he'll have to get used to the journey. Chances of a proper job when he's older are more likely in London so he might as well prepare for it now. Also working on Oxford St/central London is hardwork but fun in a way working anywhere else just isn't. It's so easy to make friends, connections etc.

But imo someone would have a higher chance of survival rate in car crash then the others

On Saturday, 7 people were tragically killed.

Around 50 people were injured.

Hundreds were led to safety.

Thousands were in the immediate area with little idea of what was even happening.

Millions more were elsewhere in London.

The chances of surviving a terror attack are favourable. Flowers

OP sorry if I sounded a bit curt - of course I get it must be really hard for you, and I do hope he gets a lot out of the job! It sounds like a brilliant opportunity for a 16 y.o., he should be proud!

JigglyTuff · 07/06/2017 09:22

Well done you and well done your son. Hope he's a great success in his new job :)

How can it possibly take two hours one way? Once you're at Richmond, it takes fifteen minutes to Vauxhall and from there ten minutes to Oxford Circus. Adding in a 40 minute bus journey still only takes the journey to just over an hour which is completely standard for a London commute. I guess with waiting time you might push it up to an hour and a quarter.

Please think carefully before passing on the sentiment that tiny risks are worth altering your life for. My mother did this about everything (terrorism, kidnappers, rapists, muggers were apparently around every corner) and I have been in therapy for anxiety since I was 15, now 30. Obviously being vigilant of suspicious activity is sensible.
