To ask if people in professional roles should have visible tattoos?

Nurses, midwives, doctors, social workers, teachers?

Does it depend on the role? The tattoo? The placement of the tattoo?

Doesn't it matter at all or should they not have them at all?

My tattoos have meaning for me too Juan. I have lost all my skin pigmentation due to vitiligo and it's knocked my confidence a hell of a lot. I look and feel ugly but ink on my skin is one way of putting colour back on my skin and they make me smile.

I also have my children's names on my wrists. I am a self harmer and when I see my kids names there i stop and think for a moment..enoughto put the scissors down and away. Sounds batshit but I've never thought of my tattoos as something to be ashamed off or had them to follow a trend.

And as for professionals having them..well who gives a fuck!

My son's teacher has pink hair, tattoos and at least 2 piercings that I can see. I love it.

DJBaggySmalls · 05/06/2017 19:40

If its a swastika, no they shouldn't. Otherwise, it has no bearing on their ability to do the job.

Welshmaenad · 05/06/2017 19:41

I'm a social worker. I have tattoos and facial piercings. I also used to have blue hair. I don't see that it detracts from my ability to do my job.

Gloria, don't fret another minute, my mum's dead so unlikely to be upset at all.

Bettyspants · 05/06/2017 19:43

DH is a head teacher, he has a full arm tattoo. It's been mentioned a few times but certainly hasn't affected his career pathway. Unfortunately there are those who forge an opinion based on a persons appearance....however there's always goi g to be the stereotypical tattooed/pierced person who conforms to those expectations!!

WhooooAmI24601 · 05/06/2017 19:45

I teach and have three tattoos. I don't want to toot my own horn but I'm a great teacher. The tattoos make no difference to that fact.

Ohbehave1 · 05/06/2017 19:53

I find non tattood people tend to be so judgement and think they have the moral high ground.

Is that enough of a generalisation for you? It's no different to saying that having tattoos isn't professional and those that have them show a lack of judgement.

Btw. I don't think that about all non tattood people. But it is no different to any of the anti tattoo BS that people throw around.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 05/06/2017 19:57

@JuanPotatoTwo I was a lurker on your thread about your husband. It's lovely that he's with you in this way.

fannydaggerz · 05/06/2017 20:08

If it's offensive then ideally it should be coverable.

If it's not offensive then I think they should have as many as they like in any place they like.

DadOnIce · 05/06/2017 20:11

The way this thread was phrased I thought it was a request for them to have them! Tattoos which identify what job they do...

MyGast thank you for your comment, and for giving me my first @Juan notification :)

I interviewed a candidate for a childcare role recently. All was ok until I looked at their hand and realised they had DILLIGAF tattooed on one hand and ACAB on the other. We had to turn them down

OMG.
What an idiot.

PickAChew · 05/06/2017 22:45

JaneEyre chances are that a lot of people with a sleeve shave their arms very regularly so it remains visible and unobscured by hair, so no less likely to be clean than someone without one.

PickAChew · 05/06/2017 22:55

For e.g. If I was going to the doctor about a sensitive topic, I just want The interaction to be purely professional, I don't want to be looking at their tattoos and imagining them doing normal stuff like getting pissed and having tattoos, especially if I'm feeling a little vulnerable.

I feel the opposite to this. What we very rarely get at our local practice (which has other strengths) is GPs with any bloody interpersonal skills whatsoever. They have a prescribing nurse practitioner now, who is a breath of fresh air and I'd definitely choose to see her for routine stuff. Last time I saw her, she was apologising for the stench of coffee because she'd knocked her cup over, that morning! i saw her for a medication review and, rather than lecture me, in a monotone, about everything I was taking, asked me to explain what I was taking things for. No visible tats and very vanilla middle aged caramel hair dye job, but just plain human and easy to relate to.

Juan your tattoo is awesome Smile

Tattoos are just art same as any other art. Some are rubbish and done in a drunken stupor in Magaluf etc. Some are beautiful, personal and meaningful. They do not reflect on how well a person can do their job at all. In some circumstances they could be a talking point to destress a situation, break the ice. I love a good tattoo and getting one is on my bucket list Smile just need to muster the courage.
