To ask if people in professional roles should have visible tattoos?

BanginChoons · 04/06/2017 18:46

Nurses, midwives, doctors, social workers, teachers?

Does it depend on the role? The tattoo? The placement of the tattoo?

Doesn't it matter at all or should they not have them at all?

I think as long as someone hadn't got ' cunt' on something equally offensive tattooed in thick black lettering on their arms don't think it matters. I don't think these days people consider most tattoos unprofessional.
However I think it is also reasonable that we accept that currently some professions stipulate more tattoos or at least no visible ones and keep that on mind when we are making our career choices. I have an acquaintance that has wanted to be in the met police since she was three but has been rejected because of her tattoos. Was this ridiculous? Yes but on both sides as she must been aware of the requirements but still choose to get a tattoo.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 04/06/2017 18:59

God, how would it matter??

LedaP · 04/06/2017 18:59

Wouldnt bother me at all.

I have a professional job. Not gp or healthcare and a few of us have visible tattoo. Surprisingly not impacted our ability to do our job.

SmallBee · 04/06/2017 18:59

More=no

Kokusai · 04/06/2017 19:01

I don't think it's professional to have tattoos on show.

One person might think a little star on their wrist is ok, another might think their large beautiful tiger on their shoulder is and someone else thinks their whole sleeve is acceptable. Easier to have no visible tattoos than 'only tasteful ones'.

Chottie · 04/06/2017 19:02

I would not bother me in the least. Tattoos are mainstream now.

Chottie · 04/06/2017 19:02

It !!!

MrsMozart · 04/06/2017 19:06

Wouldn't give a flying fig if tattooed from head to toe, so long as, with anyone tattoed or not, the person could do their job.

Nonibaloni · 04/06/2017 19:08

My DP has several cheap horrible military tattoos. He covers them for work always and it's amazing when clients meet him in a tshirt.

He does it because of "as long as its not offensive" rule. No way to know who thinks what is offensive. Same reason he doesn't swear at work or talk about religion. Best to go totally neutral.

But I do totally agree that it makes no odds about the professional abilities.

It's like all personal grooming though a dentist with greasy hair and infected piercings doesn't make me feel great, if you see what I mean?

Sirzy · 04/06/2017 19:10

Greasy hair and infected piercings is different though as they would be an indicator of poor personal hygiene though which I don't think many would want of someone treating them! Tattoos (non offensive) say nothing except "I like tattoos"

JacquesHammer · 04/06/2017 19:10

I find them very distracting - my mind wanders to how upset their mothers must be

Shouldn't worry - my parents paid for some of mine as gifts, they're pretty much not bothered Grin

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone was covered in tattoos other than to comment I loved them 😊

Andro · 04/06/2017 19:16

As long as the tattoo is not offensive (in the sense that the average person is likely to find it offensive, not just ink being offensive in and of its self) I don't see an issue in general.

I am aware that some people find them intimidating...that could be problematic in some settings but whether that should be a barrier or not is another question entirely.

SynysterGates · 04/06/2017 19:19

Dds social worker has a tat
She is the best sw we have had
Its just ink, it doesn't change the person

Queenofthedrivensnow · 04/06/2017 19:22

I would only notice if the tattoo was really amazing then I might ask where it was done. I'm one of the mentioned professionals. My tattoo isn't usually visible but I have visible piercings. Thinking about my colleagues there are tattoos everywhere. None of our clients care. My bf is an adult sw. She has visible tattoos. Her clients don't care and the older ladies especially adore her - because she is very skilled at making older people feel comfortable - obviously!

Rantymare · 04/06/2017 19:23

If someone is good at their job, I don't give a crap what they look like and that includes tattoos or none, piercings or none, dress sense or hair colour.

topcat2014 · 04/06/2017 19:24

I would not employ anyone with tattoos on the face or neck.

Arms less of an issue.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 04/06/2017 19:25

Exactly what Kingjoffrey said. I'm also in a professional role and am covered in them. Along with a swear word in a visible place. I give not one fuck, and it doesn't stop me doing my job

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/06/2017 19:27

I have one, but its on my shoulder so not on show at work (NHS)

Actually 99% of the time I forget its there (but I don't flash the flesh at work anyway)

Personally, I don't like them on show at work really, but meh .

ForalltheSaints · 04/06/2017 19:27

For me it is not the tattoo, it's that professional people should be appropriately dressed. I have no wish to see a man's chest or a woman's bra strap in those circumstances.

NotACleverName · 04/06/2017 19:27

Is this a serious question?

genna1310 · 04/06/2017 19:30

I have a number of tattoos and now wish I'd had them either not at all, smaller or hidden well because I do believe us with ink get judged...
I don't work currently but I try my horses to hide them when going for an interview x

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/06/2017 19:31

I would not employ anyone with tattoos on the face or neck.

Do pray tell why?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/06/2017 19:31

Why not. Their tattoos could be symbolic to them. I don't believe your work should dictate your personal life.
People do have lives outside of work.

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/06/2017 19:34

I honestly wouldn't care if ones taught or treated by someone who had nore metal than a meccano set and who's actual clothes were a tattoo.

Just be nice and kind and good at your job.

Anyone who doesn't want a person with a tattoo or who has a ring through their boss feel free to pass on them so they can treat me or someone else instead...

PenguinDi · 04/06/2017 19:38

I have a tattoo on my lower inner arm and is visible when I am at work, it is not offensive nor derogatory and I never been asked to cover up my ink.

As previous posters have said I have no problem with tattoos as long as they are not offensive (naked pictures, swastikas etc), a tattoo makes no difference to how someone does their jobs.
