To have put in my (postal) vote today for the Tories?

IonaNE · 04/06/2017 16:00

I agree with their education policy (especially grammar schools) and a lot of their criminal and immigration policies. I have done the "isidewith" quiz (uk.isidewith.com/political-quiz) and I side 58% with Conservatives, 48% with Labour and 40%, 36% and 34% with UKIP, LibDem and the Green Party, respectively. But in general I have done it because it seems to me that the Conservatives are clever people (mostly Oxbridge educated), and you have to trust the leading of a country to clever people. (We all remember a certain Labour prime minister and his "bigoted woman" remark, when he thought his mic was off, don't we?) The Tories support working people, as opposed to second- and third-generation lifelong benefit claimers (large estates of high deprivation in my region) and they have already proved themselves by decreasing unemployment levels to those in the 70s, if I remember well (I wasn't in this country then, I'm an immigrant).

Disclaimer: I mostly use MN at the weekends, so I will come back and read replies today but I can't promise anything from Monday onwards...

My postal vote was sent last week.

I did not vote Tory. And I never will.

Your vote is your own.

Tiredemma · 04/06/2017 16:50

Oxbridge = clever but limited by way of common sense

Rainbowcolours1 · 04/06/2017 16:51

You clearly have no understanding of the position that schools are in, or that under another five years of Tory governance this will get worse. Intelligence is not just about being academic, or having acedemic qualifications...nor does intelligence necessarily make a good leader...there are many other qualities that a leader needs, including a genuine care and interest in people, regardless of race, gender, creed etc. Not something I have seen in Tory policy.
Your vote is yours but please don't goad...although clearly you have achieved that already.

Piggywaspushed · 04/06/2017 16:51

Besides which, having a degree is , say, Economics does not equip you to be an empathetic or informed Education secretary. (Disclaimer : she went to Southampton, which appears not to be good enough)

Or having a degree in PPE perhaps gives you 1/3 qualification to run the country's economy.

Vango · 04/06/2017 16:52

It's so obviously goady, so totally ridiculous, that I have nothing but pity for the OP. The other reasons for voting conservative (blue skies/H&M tops/magpies etc) are making me cry laughing!

Toocold · 04/06/2017 16:52

I find it worrying you had to do a quiz to decide which way to vote. I am better of under the tories, I'd never vote for them as they aren't good for the rest of the population.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/06/2017 16:52

Also. Little miss goady. What about children in countries who have to pay for their schooling. They could have a brilliant brain, but Theyre not getting the chance to shine and apply it. !!!!
So do not come on here saying Educated people are better than the rest of society.

Not everyone is born with 50 carat gold spoon in their mouth.

NotYoda · 04/06/2017 16:52

Fol De rol

And I'll eat you for my SUPPER!

allegretto · 04/06/2017 16:53

This has to be a wind up. You support secondary moderns ok - but the rest doesn't make sense.

secondhoneymoon · 04/06/2017 16:53

Your vote is your vote to do with what you wish - but why you would publicly declare that you don't care about those people who aren't able to afford private education or private healthcare is beyond me. Or to expose your ignorance on many points re expensive education vs intelligence. But hey, free world, your choice

upperlimit · 04/06/2017 16:54

Vote for whoever you like shiny, it's your choice. I think it criminal to spunk a hard-earned vote on such flimsy rationale though.

Brokenbiscuit · 04/06/2017 16:58

Well, yanbu to vote Tory if you support their policies. I think you're utterly wrong and misguided, but you're entitled to your opinion and to vote in whatever way you choose. That's democracy and we will all have to live with the consequences.

YABVU if you think that the Tory party is the "clever" party. Firstly, while most Oxbridge graduates are clever, there are many, many very clever people who didn't go to Oxbridge and it's a bit narrow-minded not to realise this. Secondly, Labour and the LibDems are full of Oxbridge graduates as well. Thirdly, all the evidence suggests that, the more educated people are, the more likely they are to lean towards the political left and the less likely they are to vote Tory.

Eolian · 04/06/2017 16:59

What a load of ill-informed twaddle. Depressing to hear that you were a teacher. I am one too and have many, many teacher friends. I don't think a single one of them is going to vote Tory. I can't even be bothered to explain why. It's perfectly obvious to anyone who knows anything has worked in the education system in the past decade. As for the Oxbridge remarks - laughable.

AuldHeathen · 04/06/2017 17:00

Most Tory voters I've come across I have found to be extremely naive or extremely selfish. Often both of these. Which are you, OP?

IonaNE · 04/06/2017 17:00

you work(ed) with the disadvantaged whilst simultaneously sneering at them. What an asset to the role you must be
The first lesson the "disadvantaged" must learn is that you take the job you can find because having a job serves the purpose of making a living; and you don't wait until a job you fancy more than playing Grand Theft Auto comes along (X-factor winner, premier league footballer). I was working in that role because I had bills to pay and nothing better came along. When it did, I left the job.

you can't say on the one hand, record numbers of people in employment, but on the other hand, three generations of people who have never worked. Who is taking all these jobs
First generation unemployed? Non-lifelong unemployed?

I'm sorry but I don't want to respond to the "paraplegic has to look for work" post because being an immigrant I am afraid I would offend British sensitivities.

tethersend · 04/06/2017 17:01

Don't worry, since the tories sold off the post office, it probably won't arrive anyway.

Piggywaspushed · 04/06/2017 17:01

Goodness, OP, I was kind of hoping you would come back and say something that proved me wrong!

You seem to have moved on to better paid pastures new, now. Thank heavens.

Shame you are an immigrant. It sounds like ukip/bnp would love you.

Why do you need to keep telling us you are an immigrant??

Is this meant to be relevant, or somehow explain something?

btw , I actually think this thread is funny. But I do not think it is amusing to put the word disadvantaged in withering speech marks.

Come on - you're Katie Hopkins, aren't you??!

IHateUncleJamie · 04/06/2017 17:05

No, she's Paul Nuttall. Grin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/06/2017 17:06

You work with the disadvantaged. Its only because I don't know anything about you or where you work that I'm not reporting you, but believe me if I had that information. On my mother's ashes. I'd have absolutely no qualms at all about reporting you.
Your there to help and support. Not wallow and ridicule.

museumum · 04/06/2017 17:06

Vote for who you want but that woman who had a rant at Gordon Brown was a bigoted woman!

Oh, come on OP, you are descending into parody. Perhaps you are a Labour troll?
