AIBU to try to get pregnant despite going on holiday to a zika location in 3 months

I am 37 and me and my husband are thinking of trying for a baby. We have a holiday booked to the Caribbean for end august. I want to start ttc now but is that selfish as we are going on hol somewhere with zika and therefore could put the baby at risk if I am pregnant whilst there? I really wouldn't want to cancel the holiday if I fall pregnant as spent so much money on it and DH is really looking forward to it. But I'm 37 and he's even older so don't feel have time to lose. Plus apparently people are supposed to wait at least 6 months before ttc if they go on holiday to places with zika! Unsure what to do...

Cancel the holiday.

PotteringAlong · 04/06/2017 15:43

2 choices. Stop ttc or cancel the holiday.

ShinyGirl · 04/06/2017 15:45

Change your destination. No brained, surely?

upperlimit · 04/06/2017 15:45

Yeah, just cancel the holiday or stop ttc. It's too risky to arse around with.

mrsroboto · 04/06/2017 15:45

TTC now or go on the holiday. Don't do both.
IVF clinic won't let you use sperm if the male has been to a zika area within 6 months because there is a risk to the unborn child. You should do likewise.

You'd be very foolish to ignore zika risk.

FannyWisdom · 04/06/2017 15:46

Yep massively U for no good reason.

Why risk that heartache?

Lunar1 · 04/06/2017 15:46

You would never forgive yourself if the worst happened, it's an unnecessary risk.

chickenjalfrezi · 04/06/2017 15:47

Was going to say about the 6 month sperm rule but someone beat me to it Wink

Just cancel the holiday or wait 9 months to be sure, simples.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2017 15:48

I've had one of the diseases those mosquitoes carry. Just bad luck. It doesn't matter how careful you are with insect repellent, you're just reducing the chances, not eliminating them.

Is a holiday worth it?

CatsOnMyLap · 04/06/2017 15:48

Thanks for the replies. Yep IABU.
I think we'll have to wait until after the holiday. I wonder if their are tests for zika so at least we don't have to wait six months when we get back to start trying...

hmm. cancelled holiday or risk of severely brain damaged baby. tricky decision Hmm

mummymeister · 04/06/2017 15:50

don't be unsure of what to do. read the advice and make certain that you either aren't pregnant before you go or that you don't ttc until 6 months after you get back. that means February 2018 at the earliest.

if you cant wait until then its only a holiday.

Laiste · 04/06/2017 15:51

Personally i'd cancel the holiday or change the destination. I'd spend the whole time thinking about the 9 months of non TTC time i'd lost. For 2 weeks away which will be gone in a flash.

FannyWisdom · 04/06/2017 15:53

Aye. Caribbean will still be there when you have had a baby.

Plus you will only have to wait 20 years before you can enjoy it child free Grin

Switch this hol to a nice remote villa in secluded France and get shagging.

goldangel · 04/06/2017 15:54

Yabu, but IMHE I wouldn't put the holiday before TTC.

upperlimit · 04/06/2017 15:58

If you lose money because you cancel the holiday just consider it practise for the money pit that is having children. Smile

There is testing for the zika virus in private clinics which offer a strong indication. I really wouldn't risk it.

TheWayYouLookTonight · 04/06/2017 15:59

Even if there are tests, no diagnostic/screening test is ever 100% accurate so your best way to protect your future baby is still to not go on the holiday. Can you rebook your trip to a different country?

upperlimit · 04/06/2017 16:00

I mean I wouldn't risk trusting the test with something so severe. And it is quite expensive too.

underneaththeash · 04/06/2017 16:11

Its really nor worth the risk for just a holiday (I caught zika in Barbados last year).

harderandharder2breathe · 04/06/2017 16:15

Either change the holiday destination or stop TTC til afterwards and after the exclusion period (six months is mentioned up thread).

You would be stupid to knowingly go to a zika area while pregnant. Yes I know people live there and they have to get on with their lives. But you don't live there, why would you make a choice to do something that could have such serious consequences to your unborn child?

mrsroboto · 04/06/2017 16:17

ivf clinic said there's no test that can test for certain, hence why they insist you wait 6 months

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2017 16:18

This is going to sound possibly a bit mean... And hypocritical as I had one child very late.

You are 'thinking' of trying for a baby. You're 37 which is late for TTC. You sound like you'd rather miss 9 months of TTC than miss a holiday.

Are you absolutely sure you want a baby? They curtail a lot of stuff. Frankly it's a bit of a pain in the arse. We've only just started going on good holidays again and she's 6.

Ignore me if I'm off.

CatsOnMyLap · 04/06/2017 16:19

You are all correct of course. I think I need to talk to my husband about cancelling the holiday. Otherwise I'll be 38 by the time we can ttc and I'm aware I'm running out of time...

OP posts:
CatsOnMyLap · 04/06/2017 18:28

MrsTerryPratchett- no I'm suppose I'm not 100% sure. But I am aware that time is running out...

Cancel the holiday or go on holiday and stop ttc. I thought it was 2 years not 6 months but might be wrong. I do know its in the sperm so even if your husband goes alone and you ttc its a risk. Not worth it.
