London does not feel safe

The Westminster attack, now the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks Sad.

The horrible rise in knife crime Sad.

And the knife crime / murders are not remote. The 18 year old son of our ex neighbours was chased and stabbed to death about 2 years ago, about 10 minutes drive from where we live. About a week ago a woman was shot and killed on the same road that my H has a shop on. A few months ago a young boy was stabbed to death outside a neighbouring secondary school - the students at my dcs' secondary school were offered counselling.

Certainly true that IRA have killed more but a quick look at the wiki links does seem to show more deaths in London from ISIS, 50 alone from 7/7. As you say I'm sure more injuries due to IRA due to bombs. It's a moot point anyway as 1 death by a terrorist is abhorrent. I just think it's ok to say your scared now & just because it was bad in the past doesn't mean we should just deal with it (not accusing you of saying this just the sentiment)

MrsDeVere did not view the police as a threat equal to violent criminals.

You surmised that from an jnnacurate grammar interpretation.

Here's an interesting article showing deaths broken down by country.

My friends live in very rural Dorset. Think 6 miles to the nearest town.
Their 27 year old teacher daughter was worried about a terrorist attack!

Really?

Maybe when the rest of the country has been razed to the ground and their little rural idyll is the last place standing!

Heck! They've only just started locking their door at night!
They are more at risk of a fox taking out their remaining last four geese like one did several years ago!

We have people like that very prevalent around here. A couple of Christmases ago there was an explosion. FB went bonkers with "how do we protect our children, what should we doooooooo"

Those of us who suggested terrorism was really unlikely were routinely abused as islamist sympathisers.

It turned out to be a gas cannister at a pub blowing Grin Of course the more hardcore suggested it had been cunningly placed by ISIS - the fact that we're semi rural and the most controversial thing to happen in recent years is an uneven pavement tragedy was lost on them

Lol jacques.

Bluebeck Actually there was a backlash against the Irish. At the time of the Birmingham pub bombings I worked with a lovely, gentle, Irishman from Galway in London. He had an obviously Irish surname and would receive abusive phone calls most nights and had to go ex directory. Sadly the bigots were always out there.

I'd like to think Met Police has changed and believe it has improved but in the 1970s and early 80s I worked with two black guys who lived in Streatham and Thornton Heath respectively. Neither were able to drive home on a weekend evening through the main road in Brixton without being stopped, searched and sometimes bruised. They were both wonderful humans and it was heart breaking. I do think huge efforts have been made and the police on the streets seem to be more representative and showed real courage again yesterday.

BunsBumpBlur · 04/06/2017 20:40

I lived in the US in the 80's - London today is a comparable nirvana. We have been out all day in London. I never felt unsafe.

MulderitsmeX · 04/06/2017 21:04

I don't feel particularly unsafe. I was in a pub last night kind of near london bridge when they locked all the doors and made us stay inside, even then I didn't really feel like I was in any danger.

I'm from the countryside and know a fair few people who have been killed/seriously injured on poorly lit country lanes, there's all sorts of dangers so I don't feel like my general peril level is higher in London, I actually mostly feel very safe. (Nb i do live in a pretty safe area). (Touch wood)

Maybe im just too blase though!!
