MiMiMaguire · 03/06/2017 23:34

Due to travel to Spain for 2 weeks soon with DH and DD... Am really terrified of a terrorist attack at a tourist spot/beach , really feel like not going (at the loss of over 2k) and staying put where I feel safer..my DH wouldn't feel the same I really am afraid. Really hope there are no fatalaties in London tonight, Hope everyone is ok.

PPs are right re smallness of risk, even now; of a numerically far greater risk to life being a car accident or house fire or severe illness etc; that we do on some level need to keep our day-to-day life going. But I don't think we should condemn people for feeling like this, for worrying about the risk and wonderinng how to minimise it. We don't accuse women of betraying the feminist cause if they don't feel comfortable walking home alone at night. We don't accuse them of 'letting the misogynists win'.

SugarnetMum · 04/06/2017 00:52

In Spain at the moment. Do not worry as other people have said, UK is probably safer than Spain all around! Hope they enjoy their holiday x

Crumbs1 · 04/06/2017 00:53

Low risk. Do you let them ride in a car, which is higher risk?

HeteronormativeHaybales · 04/06/2017 00:56

And tbf I am always a bit nervous of car journeys. I do them, no question, but I'm not keen and always very relieved when long ones in particular are over.

scaryteacher · 04/06/2017 00:58

I am doing the most dangerous thing next week, after going to meetings in London.....driving on the Ring in Brussels. More people die on Belgian roads each year than by terrorism in the UK.

chipsandpeas · 04/06/2017 01:03

id still go i went to nice 2 days after the manchester attack
nice had a lovely tribute for the manchester attacks

stonecircle · 04/06/2017 01:11

Caroldecker - but being caught up in a terrorist incident would be terrifying and traumatic. Your post suggests as long as you aren't killed or injured then it's not a problem for anyone. There will be many people caught up in the Manchester incident who may not have suffered physically who will no doubt be in terrible mental turmoil.

Having said that, DS is off to Spain tomorrow and it never occurred to me to worry. And I'll be at London Bridge station on Monday morning as usual.

GrimDamnFanjo · 04/06/2017 01:22

Spain would be very safe compared to other places. Even traveling to higher risk places would not really put you in danger.

esk1mo · 04/06/2017 01:24

i hate these threads after terrorists incidents. of course you ABU.

caroldecker · 04/06/2017 01:47

Of course being involved in terrifying - look at what id happening in London tonight.
My point is OP is not involved, has not been involved and is being fucking stupid (and insensitive) to worry about her holiday. think of the victims, not 'oh why am I not important/special enough to have a war story' about it.

Crashbangwhatausername · 04/06/2017 02:17

Op has said she is scared, it doesn't mean she doesn't feel devastated for the victims of the recent attacks, it is frightening as well as all the other emotions that go with hearing news like tonight. Op I honestly would go on the holiday though, no one can absolutely guarantee nothing will happen but the chances are so unlikely and England is less safe than Spain right now

SallyCanWait · 04/06/2017 02:42

I'm an anxious little fucker. Hate flying the lot. I can't wait to get the hell out of here in 28 days to spain. You'll be fine.

Guepe · 04/06/2017 03:22

i hate these threads after terrorists incidents. of course you ABU.
Me too. People die in these attacks but there's always mumsnetters who are quick to make it about themselves.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/06/2017 04:05

Spain isnt, at least to my knowledge, having a General Election that is guaranteed to have the world press focussing on it. I am sure that that is why there have been these terror attacks in the UK in such a small timeframe. I have no evidence of that but it seems to be a bit of a coincidence dont you think?

There has to be a pay off for these people and knowing that they have affected our democractic process (which as we all know, they fucking hate. We should all do as they tell us) is that pay off. Campaigning was suspended after Manchester and perhaps they think that if they kill enough people then the GE will be postponed......just goes to show how little they know about the British "Fuck You" spirit doesnt it?!

Thinking logically, what would be the pay off for attacking a random Spanish resort? There isnt one, or at least not one worth the risks involved.

I get anxious too and I find that logic is my saviour.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/06/2017 04:09

Being frightened that you might be involved in one of these attacks is not "making it about themselves". Its about natural self interest and survival instinct. Its about risk assessment of whether the trip is worth the risk. We all do it. We know that we could die in a car accident but we still drive to Tesco because we know that overall the risk is very low.

In this case there has been 2 major incidents (counting both attacks in London tonight together) with 2 weeks, anyone who isnt even vaguely concerned and rethinking where they are going and what there plans are is the fucking idiot.

Thats not to say that plans should be cancelled or anything, but that it is only sensbile to reconsider a previously made risk assessment in the light of new information.

I think the OP should go, but I am disgusted at some of the comments on here towards her.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 04/06/2017 04:10

I'd also rather be in Spain than the U.K. No reason a holiday resort would be especially dangerous. People in London were just walking over a bridge.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/06/2017 04:11

Please ignore typos and terrible grammar, in bed on my phone.

their/there etc

Millionsmom · 04/06/2017 04:26

My DD told me she didn't want me to go back to a Middle East country as she was worried about terror attacks. I think it's safer in the Middle East right now than the UK Sad

YANBU feeling afraid, I totally get it, but YABU not to figuratively give the hatemongers the bird and go and have the BEST holiday ever.

SuperBeagle · 04/06/2017 04:34

It's not silly to worry, but it would be silly to cancel the holiday.

I was in Sydney, about 500m from the Lindt Cafe, when that terror attack happened. My husband called me while I was in Dymocks, and until then, I had no idea what was happening. Yes, it was scary, but even being that close to an active attack, I was not in any danger.

We have a holiday planned for the UK in December. I'm not going to cancel out of fear for something that is extremely unlikely to happen.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 04/06/2017 05:16

The attacks are appalling.. Tragic

The reason why it is so shocking as it is soooo rare..... This is why media go into overdrive....

Don't let terrorists win....

And as others have said.. You're far more likely to be killed in an rta, have a heart attack etc

BitchQueen90 · 04/06/2017 06:14

In the nicest possible way, get a grip.

What would you do if a terrorist attack happened on your street? Never leave the house again?

I'm going to the canaries next week and it wouldn't even occur to me to be afraid.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/06/2017 06:41

My dd lives in Manchester and is currently in Spain at a festival. Yes, worried, but not letting it rule her life.
You'll be fine.

MiMiMaguire · 04/06/2017 07:40

"Oh why am I not important/special enough to have a war story about it" - are you fucking serious caroldecker.
What a warped way of thinking.

I am devastated for the victims of these attacks, just because I'd rather avoid myself or particularly my daughter being a victim (despite the implication from your strange statement above), doesn't make me insensitive or any less shocked and upset by what's happening.
You don't be so fucking stupid.

Thanks for everyone else's replies who got where I was coming from.

Jesus. Of course it's not. There are suicide bombings nigh on every week in the Middle East.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 04/06/2017 08:18

There have been no terrorist attacks in Spain since 2008 or 2009.

I am going to Spain on holiday in the Summer and that only bit that worries me is the British airport.
