...to think house viewer was taking the piss - literally

Our house is on the market and we had a viewing today. They arrived 15 mins late, the agent met them at the door. The door to the kitchen was half open and my DCs and I were sat in the adjoining family room (we normally go out for viewings but this one had moved it twice, it was 430 and I couldn't be arsed going out again. I heard them come in, it went quiet then suddenly the sound of the downstairs loo flushing! Then the tap going.

Am I being picky expecting a stranger in my home to ask to use the loo?

Could she not wait 20 minutes???

Where is she going to go after 20 minutes? Find a pub? A café?
A public toilet? Why not just ask the EA before she starts viewing so she can view without discomfort?

*Viviennemary"
This has been covered over and over again in the thread.

The OP delegated the viewing to the estate agent.
The viewer almost certainly asked the estate agent before entering the house.

Mamabear12 · 04/06/2017 20:14

Def run taps and flush toilets when looking to buy. We did this and discovered the house had water pressure issue, which thankfully we were able to fix. We were able to negotiate the price down because of this.

mathanxiety · 04/06/2017 20:23

I always assumed that people would use the facilities when my house was on the market. Or at least run all taps and flush all the loos.

I had a 'quirky' handle on one of the loos that had to be held in order for the flush to complete. As a result, we found plenty of evidence of people 'making themselves at home' when we returned after each hour long viewing window. Nobody left a mess above or beyond normal expectations. I just flushed in accordance with the quirk.

The secret to selling your house without all this angst is to leave the house while people are viewing it. What you don't know won't annoy you.
Plus, you do not want anyone rushing through your house without looking properly just so they can find a loo somewhere else.

Do you want to sell the house or not?

mathanxiety · 04/06/2017 20:27

A person viewing your house with buying it in mind is not a 'visitor' like your friends or neighbours dropping in.

A house viewing is not a social event hosted by you. All the viewers are customers. The customer is always right.

nina2b · 04/06/2017 20:29

I'm not sure the "taking the piss" - as you call it - IS literal.

nina2b · 04/06/2017 20:31

As for using the loo, as others have said this may not actually have happened. You have assumed this.

Bunnyfuller · 04/06/2017 20:34

You know, after last night I just can't do the MN bitchy bs.

She prob needed the loo and asked the agent. YABU

29Palms · 04/06/2017 22:16

My neighbour is an estate agent, so I asked her if people often ask to use the loo when viewing. "All the time" was her reply.

ChangelingToday · 04/06/2017 22:18

FuzzyWuzzy I was sure you were going to say the grandparent had died on the toilet or something!

ShakingAndShocked · 04/06/2017 23:38

You asked a question and posters answered. How is that being either bitchy' or 'BS'? Confused

LadyLoveYourWhat · 04/06/2017 23:54

I was pregnant when we were house hunting and I don't think I had a wee in all the houses we viewed, but it was a pretty close call. I did always ask (mostly the agents, because the owners were usually out).

I wish my mum had checked the toilet in her retirement flat before buying it because it took ages (like half an hour) for the cistern to refill - so the advice might be to flush the toilet twice...!

iMogster · 05/06/2017 18:28

I always flush a toilet, turn on shower and taps too during a house viewing.
If someone used my toilet during a viewing and left it in good condition, then it wouldn't bother me.

Kokusai · 05/06/2017 18:32

You're 'literally" the bitchy one OP, bitching on an Internet forum that a viewer eflushed the toilet and may or may not have had a wee in it!

Kokusai · 05/06/2017 18:32

I also ran raps, shower and gave the loo a flush when I was viewing. Always asked the agent and they always said go ahead.

I discounted several flats with crappy pressure.

SteppingOnToes · 05/06/2017 18:39

Why is it considered rude to use the toilet in someones house? Why do we feel the need to ask? Everyone has to pee and you're hardly going to say to them 'no just hold it' - there is only one answer so the question is pointless.

I always ask but this thread has made me question why...

29Palms · 05/06/2017 21:00

I think in the first instance we often have to ask, because we don't know where the loo is.

Otherwise it tends to be more of an "excuse me" thing, because by going to the loo we break the conversation or disturb the company. Just manners, but it's not really about using the loo.

nina2b · 05/06/2017 21:04

The OP wanted everyone to agree with her - because well everyone knows she is right. Naturally.
