...to think house viewer was taking the piss - literally

Our house is on the market and we had a viewing today. They arrived 15 mins late, the agent met them at the door. The door to the kitchen was half open and my DCs and I were sat in the adjoining family room (we normally go out for viewings but this one had moved it twice, it was 430 and I couldn't be arsed going out again. I heard them come in, it went quiet then suddenly the sound of the downstairs loo flushing! Then the tap going.

Am I being picky expecting a stranger in my home to ask to use the loo?

I do too, Navy. I think their just spoiling for a fight 🙈 Am now wondering how they are in other people's houses? Just wander off randomly without a word? We were sat with the TV on. I'm happy to accept the BU and move on. But I will carry on asking when I'm elsewhere.

I am just used to visitors ASKING

You're paying ££££ to the agent partly to host her, so you don't have to.

If I rocked up to a viewing, embarrassed and desperate for the loo - I'd ask the agent - probably outside the property. It's far more likely you didn't hear her asking, than she just helped herself.

Notonthestairs · 03/06/2017 20:54

I get where you are coming from but...
We had to drive a long way to view our current house and whilst in an ideal world I would not have needed a wee in a house we were viewing after an hour or more in the car I might have done (2 kids, 17 months between them played havoc with my pelvic floor). If I thought I could get away with a sneaky wee (after asking the agent) then yeah I would have used the loo.
If they have the money and you want to sell to buy what does it matter? - there is always dettol wipes if you feel you need them.

Zampa · 03/06/2017 20:58

We travelled 190 miles for a viewing. We were running late because of traffic and I was desperate for a wee. I asked the agent if I could use the loo and whilst not impressed, they were sympathetic and granted permission. I've also asked if DCs can use the loo when viewing properties. The one time we didn't, DSS had an accident not long after leaving. I still feel guilty about that one.

Syc4moreTrees · 03/06/2017 21:02

I think they probably were checking the plumbing too, I flushed and ran taps when I viewed houses.

Didn't even consider asking 😬

I often show houses. A big percentage flush and run taps. Get over yourself.

ittakes2 · 04/06/2017 17:48

I'm kind of in two minds - I do think it's weird to use toilet on house viewing - but there is a chance they had travelled far or the woman was pregnant etc. I think if she'd asked that would have been the correct thing to do. Maybe she asked the real estate agent and they didn't mention to you she had asked.

Maireadplastic · 04/06/2017 17:51

I turned on the shower to check pressure (didn't want 20 years of flaccid showers). I asked. I think.

RevEm · 04/06/2017 17:58

YABU.

AmberStClare · 04/06/2017 18:06

Have recently sold our house and didn't think of this. Am off to scour the toilets - thought of strange hairy arses sitting on them. And I would not have dreamed of using facilities in the houses I viewed, that is what hedges are for!

ShakingAndShocked · 04/06/2017 18:16

'Flacid showers' is a bloody fantastic description of those pissy li'l weak showers!

OP I do get where you are coming from but if the loo was 'used' (as opposed to flushed for pressure testing) I 100% think she/he would have asked the agent so maybe have a chat with them if you're not comfortable?

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 04/06/2017 18:17

You're not listening, are you, OP? The viewer asked the EA, who you're paying to show viewers around. If the viewer had asked you then 1. she'd have been being rude to the EA and 2. she'd have been being rude to you, disturbing you when the presence of the EA is a very strong indication that you do NOT want to be bothered by viewers. You delegated authority to the EA. Your understanding of what constitutes good manners seems rather warped!

I know it's stressful selling your house but you need to decide whether you want to retain complete control over every aspect of a viewing, in which case you conduct them yourself, or you want the EA to do it, in which case you accept that you will not be the first point of contact for questions/requests and that somebody else - literally, your agent - will intercede on your behalf. If you struggle with that, it may be best that you absent yourself during viewings.

I can't imagine that many people actively want to use the loo in a house they're viewing, with the EA waiting outside the door for them...poor woman was probably really embarrassed at having to ask the EA.

ememem84 · 04/06/2017 18:20

I used the loo in a house I viewed yesterday. I asked if it was ok. Am visibly pregnant though and was dying for a pee....

TeaAddict235 · 04/06/2017 18:25

we need a new acronym: My Precious Toilet - MPT

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 04/06/2017 18:27

We need a new smiley. A toilet with a big padlock attached.

Cloudhopping · 04/06/2017 18:29

I'm with you Op. I think it's bad manners to use the loo. Could she not wait 20 minutes??? I've never tested the flush or taps either when buying a house and believe it or not, have never suffered any disastrous consequences as a result.

missdebaroo · 04/06/2017 18:48

When you gotta go, you gotta go!

jenzebra · 04/06/2017 19:19

Selling a house is such a ball ache, the people buying our house went through every cupboard, drawer and lifted mats etc

Beating we are two months into the sale, wanted a second viewing and rocked up with 11 people to view!

Good luck x

MissionItsPossible · 04/06/2017 19:37

YABU. She potentially used the toilet, not 'literally took piss'.

Meinmytree · 04/06/2017 19:41

I'm currently hunting for my first house, I'd never have considered checking water pressure etc, so thanks for the heads up on that!

Went to my first house viewing yesterday which has now been taken off the potentials list as it didn't have a proper kitchen

NewRoadToHappinessxx · 04/06/2017 19:54

Throw this in. Yabu however maybe there is more too it ...... are you being forced into selling the house by a marriage split perhaps? Every viewing then feels like an invasion of privacy, someone coming along to steal your life? Then, albeit irrational someone using the toilet or opening the kitchen cupboards will be a HUGE thing.

I always ask to use the loo, I even ask in my parents house lol xx

Lindsxxx · 04/06/2017 20:03

Um
How does flushing the loo tell you what water pressure is like?
My water pressure is shocking but my big flushes just fine!!

Viviennemary · 04/06/2017 20:05

It is rude to use the loo in somebody else's house without asking if you are on a first visit regardless of whether you are viewing the house or not. Can't believe people think this is OK. It's very very rude.

If she was making sure it flushed I suppose that would be OK. But I'd think it was a bit of a strange thing to do. Though a badly flushing loo is horrible. Oh dear not sure now. Confused
