To not want to give my name and address to buy a tshirt?

DrivingMeDaisy · 02/06/2017 15:04

Just popped into Joules and bought 3 kids tshirts. At till point asked if I've shopped there before? Yes. Then asked for postcode, surname, then title, at which point I asked why it was needed as I just wanted to buy some tshirts. Sales assistant completely thrown, apparently they need it for their mailing list and to send me offers (which wasn't explained and I didn't want). AIBU to not want to have to give personal details just to buy some clothing? Noticing this more and more in shops now.

@SisyphusDad personally, we have told management we don't like it and that customers hate being asked, but for as long as they refuse to come on the shop floor themselves and actually work behind the till, it will continue.

But until then, it is unfortunately part of the job and sales assistants don't deserve people being rude to them.

We're encouraged to chat to people who shop in our store. Not everyone's cup of tea, but again, we have no choice. I've been told to fuck off, had hands shoved in my face and had customers just walk off mid-sentence or ignore me to my face.

Yes, I can understand not liking it but I don't understand why some people insist on being so rude and ignorant to people who are just doing their job!

MacarenaFerreiro · 03/06/2017 11:19

Just say no.

It's not rocket science. And don't be rude to the poor assistants who will have the manager giving them a bollocking if they don't ask.

LadySalmakia · 03/06/2017 11:23

There's a couple of shops I use very regularly that I do use my address with - white stuff don't send much and often have good discounts for instance, and bravissimo use your details very wisely - I'm forever going in and saying "I bought this nice bra with like lacy bits two years ago can I have another also what is my bra size" and they've got it all recorded beautifully.

I will only shop at WH Smith under total duress and have had actual arguments with the assistants I over the bits of vouchers and shit chocolate they sell. I just say "no thank you"but then you get" but you have to take the voucher" or "it's only another three pounds". I'm not rude but I won't take the stuff and they're obviously trained to keep asking. Once the guy winked at me when I said no thanks and did a total monotone "are you sure it's a good deal really are you sure ok".

I did have a ridiculous row over a bottle of water once in there - it was cheaper to buy the Torygraph and get the water free and I don't do that because I won't contribute to their circulation figures and the woman rang it through anyway. I refused to pay until she did it properly, she had to get a manager, was batshit. I was polite throughout though. Had to go there as was in a station and there was no where else.

QueenofEsgaroth · 03/06/2017 11:29

My visit to Clarin's the other day;

Once paid having exchanged weather pleasantries,
"do you have an email address?"
What for?
"so I can add you to our mailing list"
Oh, no thank you
"you'll get discounts and offers"
no that's ok
"then I can take other details if you like?"
no thank you, I am careful and don't like giving out my information
"we don't pass it on it's just for offers and things"
no thanks
"are you sure you..."

  • at this point I walked away because no just wasn't being heard!
QueenofEsgaroth · 03/06/2017 11:30

I was rude by walking away but had run out of polite options and time.

isupposeitsverynice · 03/06/2017 11:32

Write to the companies. Always write in with feedback. If I tell my manager a customer has complained about something during a transaction he says "mmm" and that's that. If that customer writes to him instead he'll bend over backwards to cheer them up. I'm not saying the email thing will go away if you write in whinging, but it certainly won't if no one ever complains properly and instead just grumble at till staff (who are usually on minimum wage and certainly in my case very often thinking "I'm really not paid enough to care about this")

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 12:12

Agree with caffeine

In our shop unless you say otherwise we only send you the email receipt

No newsletters come out and you are not added to a database

I ask do you want emails or a receipt. If the customer says no then i leave it....like most shop assistants i have ever come across. Not saying pushy doesn't happen because it obviously does

We are supposed to say hello when you walk in the store and once you have been in the store for a while ask if you need help. If you say no to the help we leave it

I have seen people put their hand in my colleagues face or yell no when all they have done is say hello

There are no incentives for us signing you up to emails or sending a receipt.

I work in a high street shop and i swear some people think we are on commission

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 12:14

Obviously thats just where i work, but I haven't really encountered it in other shops either

I do walk around in my own little world so that woukd explain it

LadySalmakia · 03/06/2017 12:20

Rufus I thought most retail assistants were on commission, are they not? I haven't worked in a shop for donkey's years and I was on minimum wage because it was a shit private shop but I thought the people in bigger chains had commission Anna targets and stuff?

SallyCanWait · 03/06/2017 12:26

If they ask for email address I just say I haven't got one...they just look at me like the liar I am.

Can't be arsed with it. Just bag up my stuff and let me go.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 12:50

lady

No commission...not in high street shops anyway

No incentives

Targets yes...need to make the company money after all

I work in a slightly upper end high street store

A lady came in the other day and i offered to order the thing she wanted, she said 'no i will do it at home' which is fair enough. And then she said ' i know it works out better for you is you do it' and I couldn't figure out what she meant...i assume she thought i got something for doing it, which I don't

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 12:52

lady

I get just above minimum wage

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/06/2017 13:11

No commission but still lots of pressure to sell, upsell etc. They want top sales figures but dont want to pay for them. I wouldnt work in retail again for all the money in the world. I only did it for 6 months as the job at the time fitted in with life, but the whole staff were constantly reminded via the area and general managers to sell sell sell. Lower than usual figures on any given day were questioned. All this for NMW. Hmm

DianaT1969 · 03/06/2017 13:38

YongBangKipp I think you make a valid point. Wages for store workers are generally low and I, for one, am relieved not to work in one. I did a couple of student jobs in Hobbs and a now defunct company called Knickerbox. It's the head office management who are bonkers and out of touch.
Hobbs made us use a tape measure to position the distance between shoes on shelves at the end of a shift. Then a cleaner would come in overnight and move everything. The morning shift started with everyone measuring the space between shoes again...
Shop workers I salute you for your patience WineStar

caffeinestream · 03/06/2017 19:33

I actually enjoy my job, for the most part. I'm in higher end retail and on more than minimum wage, but no, we don't get commission. We do get a bonus if we beat target for a month, but it's not an individual thing or anything like that.

95% of the customers I speak to are friendly, nice and if they don't want to talk (which is fine) they're at least vaguely polite about it.

Unfortunately, some people don't seem to remember that we're just doing our job at the end of the day. They think it's okay to yell, swear, put their hands in our faces or just flat out blank us. Personally, I think it's shit that some people think it's perfectly okay to treat other people that way.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 19:36

diana

We finger space hangers...all day

caffeinestream · 03/06/2017 19:40

@RufusTheRenegadeReindeer I'm so glad we're not the only shop to do that!

DianaT1969 · 03/06/2017 19:55

To Finger space hangers sounds mildly rude. Is that spacing hangers apart on the rail using your finger as a measurement?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 19:58

Yes diana

I was asked in Oasis for my email address so they can send receipt and I politely declined, sales assistant got very rude and said she will give paper receipt this time but going forward I will have to give email address as they are moving away from paper for environmental reasons

Roomba · 03/06/2017 20:12

I always refuse to give my details. The sole exception was when I bought a very expedited in argos, so I could get an emailed receipt. That was purely because modern receipt inks fade very quickly, so I didn't want to be left with an illegible receipt if something went wrong a year later.

No one has ever looked surprised when I've refused. If they were really insistent I would just put the item down and walk away, on principle!

Roomba · 03/06/2017 20:12

Expedited = expensive item ^

gamerchick · 03/06/2017 20:32

Debenhams do it. Bought something at till, asked for full details. Realised I needed something else, went to another till, asked for full details again. Just let me buy my stuff! You're exchanging money for goods - why do they insist of something additional to that?

God cold chill there Grin I do a swerve around the door of that place. I would love to know how to actually buy something that cuts the crap out at the till. That place is scary!

ButtonMooooon · 03/06/2017 23:06

This actually worked out well for me recently when my DS's Clarks school shoes fell apart after one term and I said ha! I have an emailed receipt

But in Argos when I got asked when I had spent £2.99 on a bloody Lego mini figure that only they seem to stock the new range I just said no thank you. She seemed embarrassed and said I have to ask even if it's a small item and the one person I don't ask will be the one that's been sent in to monitor if they're asking!!! I don't think they do it by choice!

Longdistance · 03/06/2017 23:11

Mountain Warehouse are the worst offenders. 'Can I take your email address so we can email your receipt to you?' 'You've just given it to me'.

They also ask if you'd like some tat from the stand behind.

If you give your email address you'll sell your soul to them, I tell ya!

Bombarded with emails, bitter 🍋🍋
