To not want to give my name and address to buy a tshirt?

DrivingMeDaisy · 02/06/2017 15:04

Just popped into Joules and bought 3 kids tshirts. At till point asked if I've shopped there before? Yes. Then asked for postcode, surname, then title, at which point I asked why it was needed as I just wanted to buy some tshirts. Sales assistant completely thrown, apparently they need it for their mailing list and to send me offers (which wasn't explained and I didn't want). AIBU to not want to have to give personal details just to buy some clothing? Noticing this more and more in shops now.

OP posts:
WankStainWasher · 02/06/2017 16:17

"I COULD give you my details, but then I'd have to kill you."
Too much? Grin

Wecks · 02/06/2017 16:24

Lots of places do this I never give them. Currys are the worst, didn't want to sell me the stuff without my details.

I once had a massive row with a retailer who I won't name.
I never put my phone number in websites. I put 123456789 if they insist.
When I rang up to query my order they flatly refused to speak to me because I had not given my phone number on the order.

Winterc00kie · 02/06/2017 16:33

Oh i dont mind too much, I like the idea of getting offers via email, better for the enviroment and its not like getting junk post, i can just delete emails.

HerOtherHalf · 02/06/2017 16:37

I just say no. Best one I can recall was in a car accessories retailer where they said "but it's so we can email you your guarantee". I was buying an £8.99 foot pump and they look at me like I was insane when I assured them I was happy to take the risk.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 02/06/2017 16:43

Debenhams do it. Bought something at till, asked for full details. Realised I needed something else, went to another till, asked for full details again. Just let me buy my stuff! You're exchanging money for goods - why do they insist of something additional to that?

redladybird · 02/06/2017 16:43

I always say no. Why would I want to disclose my whole life story to a queue full of people?! The only time I say yes to an email receipt is if I have bought something electrical - I alway lose my receipts.

Titterofwit · 02/06/2017 16:47

I bought a tablet from carphonewarehouse for a deal that included cash back and declined to give my details . The sales assistant gave me the worst receipt he possibly could have so that when the time came to claim the cash back it was unuseable.
I wasnt daunted by this so went back and made him give me a proper receipt I could use as the one provided was useless. Spineless twat didnt have the balls to 'discuss' it with me - blamed the 'other assistant' for not printing it out correctly.
Still .I got the cash back Grin

Elphame · 02/06/2017 16:47

I hate this too - and yes I've threatened to leave the item too. Funny how often the manager is able over ride what the assistant keeps saying is mandatory!

arbrighton · 02/06/2017 16:51

I got quite cross when mothercare did this to email receipts (and spending £300+ on travel system etc, I thought an e-copy would be handy)

but what I actually got was a load of spam, for several days before the receipts actually arrived.

So actually they lied to get my details to spam me....

FreeSpiritJen · 02/06/2017 16:54

Yeah I get something similar (from time to time) in Asda; they ask me for my postcode. To be honest I give them one from 3-4 streets away (like half a mile away,) as I don't want to give my actual address.

When I was in New Look 3 months ago (buying a top,) the girl said 'do you want your receipt sent via email?' I said 'umm ok...' And I gave her my email address. I have not bought anything from there since, and yet since that day (in early March,) I have received approximately 80 spam promotional emails from them.

I do get receipts sent via email when I buy something from Argos, (and have done for a couple of years,) but I only get about 2 or 3 'promotional' emails a month from them. So because of this, I thought it would be OK to give New Look my email address. Obvs not! Confused

I don't like store cards either, as I'm a bit sniffy about every last thing I buy being stored on some database. They have a record of what sells, and how much it sells, so why do they need a rundown of each individual customer's items that they bought in their food shopping? What's more, I had a store card for Tesco (up to about 3 years ago,) and kept getting vouchers for money off, and also 'buy-one-get-one-free' vouchers, for items I never ever bought! Confused

But yeah, like the OP, I am not keen on telling strangers my address. I even get a bit sniffy about the pharmacist calling out my name and address when I'm picking up a prescription. 'Mrs Jen? 55 High Street?' Great. Now a dozen strangers in the pharmacy know where I live! Hmm

SandyDenny · 02/06/2017 16:57

I always decline the email receipt, I've never been asked for my name and address but I wouldn't give that either.

Totally unnecessary

BorisTrumpsHair · 02/06/2017 17:02

just say NO!

Just say no thank you. job done.

Fluffyears · 02/06/2017 17:16

The staff have a target on this. I saw a sheet behind the tills totalling up how many customer e-mails each staff member had captured. Then they'll spam you and sell the marketing list.

tabbymog · 02/06/2017 17:23

It's been done at Lancome counters for a quite a while now and they're so very naice about it. Smile

I do love their Teint Idole Ultra Wear foundation which they have in my perfect colour match, though, but their lippy primer isn't nearly as good as MAC's.

intergalacticbrexitdisco · 02/06/2017 17:24

Yes, the staff have targets and get told off for not getting enough!

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/06/2017 17:25

fluff

Not all shops sell the information on

Some do though and its bloody annoying

RoseAndRose · 02/06/2017 17:26

I always query it, and always refuse to supply personal details.

A couple of shops have then yammered in about needing it should I need to exchange. I then point out I am quite happy to rely on my statutory rights, which they cannot in law override. Usually they look flummoxed at that point!

CowParsleyNettle · 02/06/2017 17:57

A polite 'no thank you' usually works.

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 02/06/2017 21:09

I work for a boutique brand that's v popular with mumsnetters and we do have targets. We are trained to use certain phrases such as "have you shopped with us before?" Before then asking for name, email and postcode. It won't let us save your profile without those three factors but we do NOT sell info. I always politely ask and explain that it's very handy if you ever lose the receipt and always ask if the customer would like to receive the email newsletter. If they say no I let them know that I've 'unticked' them from the newsletter but we can still email their receipt if they wish. To be honest it's really annoying when I ask a customer if they would like an email receipt and they respond very rudely as if I just asked them for their email password. It's obviously part of my job no need to to take my head off! Hmm

I also like to add that we're trying to go paper free so would you like us to send your receipt via email Grin
We don't all get upset if you say no! Only if you're damn rude about it.

BeyondTheReasons · 02/06/2017 21:13

They do this in mothercare and it's really irritating. Especially if there's people in the queue behind because they then know my postcode and house number....

And what exactly do you think will happen if someone knows a house number and postcode?

Hmm
Hdgshsksk · 02/06/2017 21:25

The only time I say yes to an email receipt is if I have bought something electrical - I alway lose my receipts

Take a quick photo of your receipt and email it to yourself. Its what I do.

user1495522824 · 03/06/2017 08:15

YANBU- I am in retail management and we don't like asking you but we are expected to do so. We also cover ourselves by asking in case you're our Mystery Shopper who will report back on this. It doesn't make it any less cringey or intrusive though! I usually say no thanks when I'm a customer, too.

Encountering bad service like the OP did suggests someone is either new and/or underconfident but more importantly suggests that the management aren't supporting their staff by teaching them how/why this is done and how to do it. It's a part of the job for many now so it should be incorporated into customer service training. Definitely feed this back to Joules in this instance OP; I've never been asked for my details like this when I've shopped there, so this branch needs to review how they do it- or at least check up on whoever served you.

On a previous thread one poster said she always gives SW1A 1AA as her postcode. If you have to give a name I suggest Elizabeth Windsor.
