Colleague bringing in own industrial fan and me freezing

Liliannna1 · 01/06/2017 21:44

I've got a colleague who I might add is very overweight (is this a reason for someone to be hot 24/7?) anyway my desk is in the vicinity of his HUGE industrial desk fan he has brought into work and is using to cool off. Managers have said it's fine as it's his own fan but the problem is I'm freezing and it's preventing me from working. I don't feel I should have to bring in extra clothing to put on when I get to work. There isn't the option of moving desks either.

This is causing lots of issues and it's got to the point I don't want to go to work!

WWYD?

I've been skinny and I've been obese and I ALWAYS overheat regardless of my size.
You can always put more clothes on if you're too cold, I can't take more clothes off if I'm too warm !!

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 15:45

23-24 is hot. I was in the Caribbean a few weeks ago and the average temperatures were 22-29 for that island. T-shirt weather. I don't think an office should be in the T-shirt weather range!

WeAllHaveWings · 02/06/2017 15:47

managers have said it fine for him to have the fan to cool down, but have you actually sat down and discussed with them the impact on you and other office staff?

If not speak to them and suggest shuffling the office around so he is further away from you, putting it on lowest setting or using dividers.

Coddiwomple · 02/06/2017 16:04

I don't think an office should be in the T-shirt weather range!

why not? How many layers do you really need to wear in an office where you are just sitting there doing nothing physical (you did say "Office"). I don't know any office where you must keep a jacket on, shirts are perfectly acceptable.
Offices do need to be cool down a bit because the computer equipment do raise the temperature, but 23 is not hot. If you are really suffering from the heat, what are you doing holidaying in a country up to 29?

I agree with above, if we could just close shutters on the sunny side and open windows on the other, it would be better for everybody. I don't know how people survive in the modern apartments where windows don't open.

HappyFlappy · 02/06/2017 16:04

obese people can actually feel the cold more

Apparently this one doesn't.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 16:08

I'm not Coddi. I like 22-29! On my holidays. I can stand to wear a cardigan in my office! I don't want to be in 20 degrees in and out of the pool!

I agree with you about open windows, though.

brasty · 02/06/2017 17:39

23 is hot. Your heating bills must be high. And why should it be t shirt weather inside? Put on a cardigan or jumper.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 02/06/2017 17:40

Coddiwomple You're being ridiculous, both about what temperatures are comfortable for the average person AND what air con does to one's health.

brasty · 02/06/2017 17:43

19 to 21 is normal room temperature. And simply refusing to put on a jumper or cardigan is very petty.

Coddiwomple · 02/06/2017 17:43

DailyMailReadersAreThick

You can deny other people 's experience all you want, it doesn't make them any less true.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/06/2017 17:48

Ha I have the opposite problem.at work in the one who's always too hot Blush

When I come in and the air con hasn't been on it's like a green house and they are still all there in jumpers and customers still have their coats on (it's a shop) and it's so stuffy you can't breathe and it stinks Hmm

No one here is particularly over under weight so it's definately not weight related. However the ones who moan it's cold are the ones who for whatever reason go to bed late or don't sleep and eat and eat alot of junk food (which happens when it's shift work and you are doing an evening shift and need dinner and are surrounded by takeaways...)

I pray for a customer to walk in moan it's too hot so I can shove the air con on guilt free

NellieBuff · 02/06/2017 18:18

Coddi I did ask what medical research you were referring to when mentioning Air Con and medical conditions so without proof you can say what you like but doesn't make it true

thetemptationofchocolate · 02/06/2017 18:28

I worked in an office once where my desk was in the path of a draught. The temperature was fine, but I used to get a stiff neck and a lot of headaches (probably caused by stiffness). I was very pleased when we had a change around and my desk was moved.
That is an enormous fan - is it noisy OP?

Coddiwomple · 02/06/2017 19:51

NellieBuff just google them, there are many studies. Just do a search for "sick building syndrom" for a small start.

Madwoman5 · 02/06/2017 19:59

Can he not just point it away from you?

NellieBuff · 02/06/2017 20:03

Coddi I tend not to google as I am a senior medical researcher and rely on proper research data. Sick Building Syndrome is not only based on Air Con but on the system used, floor layout, venting systems, cleansing routines of air ducts etc. So Air Con in of itself cannot cause the medical conditions you stated. Research has been actually been undertaken to dispel Sick Building Syndrome and whilst people do get ill working in offices there are many varied reasons and Air Con is not one of them.

ForalltheSaints · 02/06/2017 20:05

Doesn't an office have to be at a minimum temperature?

Coddiwomple · 02/06/2017 20:34

NellieBuff

My senior consultant of a husband respectfully disagrees with you about that, but can't be bothered to give me the relevant material to post on a "mumsy forum", so we won't go very far with that Grin

NellieBuff · 02/06/2017 20:40

Right back at you - I told my senior consultant husband and he got a good laugh at yours Grin oh and I'll tell my brother (also very senior in medical research circles and I am sure he will laugh as well Grin
