Colleague bringing in own industrial fan and me freezing

I've got a colleague who I might add is very overweight (is this a reason for someone to be hot 24/7?) anyway my desk is in the vicinity of his HUGE industrial desk fan he has brought into work and is using to cool off. Managers have said it's fine as it's his own fan but the problem is I'm freezing and it's preventing me from working. I don't feel I should have to bring in extra clothing to put on when I get to work. There isn't the option of moving desks either.

This is causing lots of issues and it's got to the point I don't want to go to work!

WWYD?

Dress to be comfortable!

Slimthistime · 01/06/2017 22:00

It's 27 in my flat
Where do I buy one?

Seriously OP how fierce is it? I think that will have a a lot to do with how managers handle it. What does he say when asked to switch it off?

userofthiswebsite · 01/06/2017 22:01

Yeah I tend to be hotter than others in the office too. I'm really interested in this powerful fan though - which is it?

(For use in my flat which really hold the heat, not at work, we have aircon luckily)

I think I run on a different climate to most others, I walk to work (30 mins) and have been walking in one layer (shirt) for some weeks but lots of people are still wearing jackets/coats (even leathers) or cardigan/sweaters etc.

Liliannna1 · 01/06/2017 22:02

It's absolutely huge turns everything into ice I'm not exaggerating he got it at a discounted rate as his brother in laws firm sourced it from their contacts this thing is ruining my life Grin

I use a fan at work a lot, there are a couple of others who are always cold.

I think you should put a complaint in writing that your colleagues needs don't trump yours and the old fan should be reinstated!

Does it rotate or is it used static?

I'm in my living room with all the windows open and the fan on full blast. I'm wearing a skirt and light t shirt. My dh is on the other sofa moaning about how cold he is despite having 3 layers on.

I get priority because a) he will be in bed in the next half an hour, b)'he can put more clothes on or use a blanket which is next to him on the sofa and c) it's much easier to warm up than it is to cool down!

I'm hot all year round. He is cold all year round.

Liliannna1 · 01/06/2017 22:05

I wonder if when the owners get the electricity bill through what they'll say? This thing cannot be cheap to run all day

nokidshere · 01/06/2017 22:06

I have - had - one of those but my teenager has nicked it for his bedroom

harderandharder2breathe · 01/06/2017 22:07

He can't strip off any more layers. You can put more layers on. The boss has said the fan is ok.

soapboxqueen · 01/06/2017 22:08

Some people are just naturally hotter. My dh is one...actually he has a few family members who are in shorts all year round and we live in the north of England.

You need to come up with a compromise. Your needs don't trump his.

Panda81 · 01/06/2017 22:09

YABU - arguments over office temperatures really irritates me. And to blame it on weight is also BVU - when I was at my slimmest I had the same issues. I'm an outdoorsy person so maybe I'm more acclimatised to cooler temperatures.

Somehow the people that are always cold seem to win the fight, when they can quite easily put on extra layers. When it gets too hot there is only so much you can do, it's not like you can strip down to swim wear or sit in the nuddy?

I am forever having to suffer being hot (I'm also 7 months pregnant which is not helping this summer!) just because my colleagues with flimsy blouses can't be arsed to put on some more layers. Angry

DontTouchTheMoustache · 01/06/2017 22:09

I'm that person in the office that turns the air con up to the max because I'm always far too warm. I blame my pale skin and freckles...I'm built for cold climates (am completely normal weight also, many people are can be warm at any size...)
There is another woman on my team who is always cold, we are polar opposites and it leads to lots of sneaky changing of temperatures when the other isn't looking. It's an unfortunate part of office life. One of the reasons I can't cope with being warm is that I'm anaemic so I struggle with tiredness and am terrified of falling asleep at my desk, keeping my fan on helps with this so there can be reasons that you.might not know about.

Liliannna1 · 01/06/2017 22:10

I'd happily go back to the old fan - a few extra layers then was fine but how many layers do I have to put on before it gets silly? I can't sit at work with 5 jumpers on. Said colleague has already said how he could never go back to previous fan now he's experienced this new one

DontTouchTheMoustache · 01/06/2017 22:11

panda I fully sympathise. There is nothing worse than sitting in a meeting sweating and coming out stinking just because someone else won't wear a Cardigan.

gottachangethename1 · 01/06/2017 22:12

I have opposite problem. Boss is constantly cold, even in August! We weren't allowed to open windows and would feel faint with the hot house temperature coming off the radiators. We have merged with another dept and their manager, who is far more savvy as well as being considerate of others. My boss attempted to close the window today and was given the option by the other boss of putting on a cardigan or bringing in a blanket- but like it or lump it the rest of us wanted air! Could have kissed her.

RandomMess · 01/06/2017 22:13

So the fan doesn't oscillate at all?

Can you get some desk/room dividers - can't think of the word!! So build a little wall around your desk.

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/06/2017 22:14

I sympathise, OP. My colleague often uses a fan in the office, even in winter, and it is really unpleasant. He gets really hot/sweaty walking around the building, particularly if he has to climb stairs, then uses the fan to cool down when he comes in. No-one says anything because he is often dripping with sweat and clearly very uncomfortable.

Liliannna1 · 01/06/2017 22:16

Nope the fan doesn't oscillate - the old one did but every single bit of paper would be flitting round the room however I still think I'd rather that than this Angry

Room dividers could be an option! And if my manager says anything I'll say hey they're mine and no more intrusive than that bloody fan Grin

OP posts:
Revenant · 01/06/2017 22:19

Do you know what temperature it actually is in the office? Perhaps you could buy a freestanding digital thermometer, agree a temperature that you can both bear and stick to it?

RandomMess · 01/06/2017 22:20

Room dividers will help, we made our cold person a barrier with flattened archive boxes to protect her legs from the draft under the door and it helped!

Perhaps sit a slanket too make it really obvious!

missanony · 01/06/2017 22:23

You must not underweight to be feeling the cold. Eat a burger

foodtime · 01/06/2017 22:28

In every office there is always that one annoying women complaining that it's cold. I bet your the person who closes all the Windows in summer.
I am sure everyone else likes the fan, that's why your boss allows it. Get over yourself and put a jumper on.
