To be scared of Labours Land tax

Dragongirl10 · 01/06/2017 15:11

Just read about this, Labour are proposing a Land Value Tax on any land owned, could cost thousands a year for anyone even with a small house, not just the rich....they have not publicised this at all.

People with modest homes could be forced to sell or go into debt, or be repossessed...

So, Piglet, why is a potentially money making tax in the manifesto? Why do you think that is?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 22:50

Pubs?
You, Rufus.

I'm getting seriously worried now.

Most people better off it seems. Maybe a bit worse off for those owning London properties valued 500k+ though.

MaidOfStars · 01/06/2017 23:01

I wonder if you would be so snide if I spent it on a season ticket for a football club
I have zero idea how to reply to this.

French lessons, the height of decadence. Did you vote Leave, Maidofstars?
No. I think modern languages are essential. It's embarrassing how low they are on our educational priorities.

But of course, that wasn't really my point. As well you know.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/06/2017 23:09

No. I think modern languages are essential. It's embarrassing how low they are on our educational priorities.

Really? My DCs have been doing French all year (Primary). But that's because I went through hell to get them moved to a good school and to make sure they actually got a chance of a decent education.

They stopped doing it at their previous school after only a few weeks as they didnt think it was beneficial enough.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 01/06/2017 23:12

I absolutely abhor the concept of a land value tax. Tax income, tax spending, tax transactions all of these things are fine becuse when you are asking someone to pay the tax they have the cash sitting there in their hand. Imo taxing based on the value of someone's home is awful. The value of your house is not something you can unlock without selling. If people cannot afford to pay this tax then their only choice will be to sell their home. How on earth is that fair? How would it deal with people who own lots of land in the south east? A farmer here would be sitting on millions based on their land wealth, but would hardly afford to pay those taxes. What about pensioners who have seen their properties appreciate in value, how would they pay? Its a terrible terrible idea.

MaidOfStars · 01/06/2017 23:12

Right. The first school didn't bother. So you moved them.

Ergo - not all schools see value in modern languages. That's embarrassing.

Not sure why the 'Really?' question is there.

MaidOfStars · 01/06/2017 23:14

Although I could argue against French as the standard starter modern language Grin

ChampagneSocialist1 · 01/06/2017 23:19

labour campaign boosted by fake twitter accounts Full article under paywall but you get the gist

JustAnotherPoster00 · 01/06/2017 23:25

ChampagneSocialist1 Its called the torygraph for a reason

PigletJohn · 01/06/2017 23:26

Tiffin

Do you mean you have been campaigning against Council tax, which for ordinary people (but not billionaire mansions) is charged in bands related loosely and inaccurately to the value of the home at a time in the past.

Council tax is not charged on agricultural land so is not relevant here.

ChampagneSocialist1 · 01/06/2017 23:39

Just of course!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 02/06/2017 00:05

Maidofstars because you said its low on a Childs educational priorities. I was just pointing out that not all schools think like this, and of course the first school not bothering to expand their vocabulary wasn't my sole reason for moving them.

Sionella · 02/06/2017 07:22

There you have it. "Most people will be better off under land tax". So "most" people's bills will drop. Er - So how the fuck is it going to raise money?

Well, we'll use it to clobber the same people whose income tax we've already raised. They won't mind, in fact they'll be damn grateful for the opportunity to bear even more of the tax burden. And everyone else will sneer at them and call them selfish if they dare to object. I mean, they're only paying a third of all income tax receipts at the moment, and their spending props up the economy, but fuck that. Who needs retail and leisure industries anyway? it's not like they raise tax through vat or pay rent into pension funds/councils or employ thousands of people, right?!

blaeberry · 02/06/2017 07:28

Not sure whether to laugh or cry at some of the things in this thread.

The idea that economy has been in trouble since the 1970s. Are people's memories or knowledge so short to think this is possibly true? The economy was in an utter mess in the 70s and the labour government had to ask the IMF for a loan and those don't come without conditions.

As for people suggesting something that is in the labour manifesto is simply a Tory scare story....

A problem with valuing land or houses at one point in time is that values vary. Business rates in my area were recently reset based on a point a couple of years ago when the local economy was booming. It has now crashed (my house has lost 20% of its value) but the new business rates have been imposed and businesses have already closed as a direct result only six months in.

Sionella · 02/06/2017 07:34

The change in business rates following woolwich v mazars is already knackering some corporate tenants. E.g. Southwark council is gunning for the full period of back payments. Well, someone has to pay for all those golden goodbyes for the (labour) councillors and their Berlin style walls, I guess!

PigletJohn · 02/06/2017 07:41

Sionella

" So "most" people's bills will drop. Er - So how the fuck is it going to raise money?"

Well, the only thing they manifesto says is that they will look at improving the Council Tax system.

If it's your belief that the council tax system is so perfect that it cannot be improved, you might consider a review to be unnecessary.

Is that your belief?
