Just had a row with my mum over feeding my nephew marshmallows. I say it's a terrible idea, because if the choking risk. She says it's fine and she wouldn't let him choke. My sister has said she doesn't want him feeding so much sugar.

Who is BU?

She is, they're a choking hazard and completely unecessary, so why do it?

egginacup · 01/06/2017 10:30

YANBU, in a restaurant near me a toddler died by choking on a marshmallow.

Lweji · 01/06/2017 10:30

Choking risk? Really? Grin

Unless you mean feeding as in having for lunch.

HateSummer · 01/06/2017 10:30

Even I sometimes choke on marshmallows going down...they expand a lot. Your mum is being silly.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 01/06/2017 10:31

Jesus, they most definitely are a choking hazard. The hospital I used to work at had a 4 year old kid come to A&E choking on a marshmallow - the child died.

HateSummer · 01/06/2017 10:31

How big are they? Has she cut them up?

SupermanStoleMyPants · 01/06/2017 10:32

They are dangerous, they are nearly impossible to dislodge if they get stuck.

Isadora2007 · 01/06/2017 10:32

Compromise with mini marshmallows?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 01/06/2017 10:33

They are a choking hazard , they can swell in the throat.

PovertyPain · 01/06/2017 10:34

Food that is either sticky or really hard (popcorn, marshmallows, hard candies); they can cause your baby to choke. Hard raw veggies (such as carrots), whole pieces of canned fruit, and large round fruits like grapes and jumbo blueberries--all choking hazards.

Why do people put small children at risk, if the evidence say not to feed them certain foods? It's not as if there isn't enough choice.

Felyne · 01/06/2017 10:35

She's 'not going to let him choke'? Right, because everyone who has had a kid choke before totally meant it to happen...

McButtonwillow · 01/06/2017 10:35

Absolutely they are a choking riskand that aside why on earth is she so keen to feed him marshmallows at the age of 1? They are stuffed full of sugar.

endofthelinefinally · 01/06/2017 10:36

Mini marshmallows are even worse.
They go further down before swelling and getting stuck.
Someone in my bereavement group lost their teenager due ti choking on a marshmallow.

PovertyPain · 01/06/2017 10:37

I meant to add, marshmallows melt in the mouth, so if the baby/small child inhales, it can act like a glue and block the airways. It's not like removing a hard object.

They swell and stick in the throat. Nigh on impossible to dislodge, child died locally in a restaurant while paramedics worked to try and dislodge a marshmallow from a hot chocolate. Awful sticky unshiftable things.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 01/06/2017 10:38

SIBU. Definitely. It's not like anyone NEEDS to eat marshmallows either, they're easily avoidable.

kaytee87 · 01/06/2017 10:41

Yanbu, also why does a 1 year old even need marshmallows. They can't ask for them and they're hardly a health food.
Don't understand why people feed babies such crap.

thethoughtfox · 01/06/2017 11:01

Dangerous and unnecessary.

early30smum · 01/06/2017 11:10

Ridiculous to feed a 1 year old marshmallows. They are pure sugar and 1 year olds have no concept they exist. Also a choking hazard.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 01/06/2017 11:12

No good reason to give them to a baby. Your mum is VU.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 01/06/2017 11:17

Apart from the obvious choking risk, your sil doesn't want the baby eating them anyway, so regardless of if your mother is "going to let him choke" or not she is being unreasonable because she's ignoring the babys mother.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 01/06/2017 11:18

*sister, sorry not sil

QuestionableMouse · 01/06/2017 11:20

Thanks, especially for the link. I'm going to show you this to her. I don't think she means any harm but she has a massive blind spot about this and it scares me because I know how dangerous they are.

I was going to say she was bu because they're just pure sugar, but then I read all the replies in which people knew of children who'd died choking on marshmallows. I had no idea they were so much of a hazard, but seeing as they're both far too much sugar for a tiny child and dangerous she's being vvvu.
