To really resent living in a safe Tory seat?

My constituency has had the same Tory MP since it's inception 20 years ago- in the 2015 GE he won by a margin of over 8000 votes, 20.9k+ to 12.6k+ votes for the Labour runner up.

I mean I'm going to vote anyway, but part of me is wondering what is the fucking point??

We have always lived in safe seats. We had the misfortune to be in Gove's constituency at one time.

I think it's quite liberating in a way, because you can vote for the party whose manifesto you most believe in, knowing that you voted with your conscience. Having said that, I did consider spoiling my vote this time.

The current incumbent has a majority of nearly 14,000. I won't be voting for him.

InfiniteCurve · 01/06/2017 09:01

Hmm well,yes...
Could have done more, but have always supported parties that were campaigning for proportional representation.
It ain't gonna happen though as those in power have too much to lose.Even in the LibDems heyday which was my most hopeful time it didn't happen Sad

saoirse31 · 01/06/2017 09:02

Yeah, difficult to chge a system which always benefits largest party. Awful system tho.

Sionella · 01/06/2017 09:03

Safe Tory seats tend to be naice areas. Somehow I doubt you resent that as much as people like my cousins resented growing up in very deprived labour areas up north!

CupcakeBabaPoo · 01/06/2017 09:03

YANBU - I live in a Tory safe seat and it is so depressing seeing all the posters/placards everywhere. Even the leaflet posted through my door yesterday gave no mention of what they will do for the area. It was just another smear campaign about JC. I will be voting Labour though.

Tempted to get my spray paint out for all the placards.... Wink

ShatnersWig · 01/06/2017 09:07

My constituency has been Tory since THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY! Current MP had a 55% share of the vote in 2015 while Lib Dem and Lab both had 15%, the UKIP, Greens etc. So to get the Tories out, basically everyone needs to support just one opposition party AND 11% of the Tory vote needs to switch. The likelihood of that happening is obviously nil.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/06/2017 09:09

Another safe Tory seat here. I've never voted Tory in my life (and I'm getting on a bit here).

But i am politically engaged and active, and have been campaigning in a nearby marginal seat for the minority party I support which has a very good chance of winning.

And I think it's always worth voting because your vote gets recorded as part of the overall percentage totals - which do have a broader impact on politics, even if it doesn't directly influence which MP represents you in Parliament.

Bonkerz · 01/06/2017 09:09

Same here. Very frustrating. Our local MP hasn't lived in our area for over 15 years. He has been involved in lots of scandals yet still gets voted in. He's totally useless!!!

naturalbaby · 01/06/2017 09:09

Another voter in a blue area here. Have tried reading their manifestos to make an informed choice and (think) I'll be joining a previous poster who said they're going green.
It is a very naice area. Can't really move due to DH's career but am dreaming of moving.

surferjet · 01/06/2017 09:13

Safe Tory areas are the nicest areas to live in.
I'm afraid that is a fact.

Safe Conservative seat here. Has been since God was a boy. Does feel very dispiriting.

BishopBrennansArse · 01/06/2017 09:19

YANBU.
My seat has been Tory for 140 years.

user1471545174 · 01/06/2017 09:21

Seriously, guys, stop suffering in all these safe Tory seats! Get edgy, somewhere like the place I grew up Grin

GrumpyOldBag · 01/06/2017 09:21

Safe Tory areas are the nicest areas to live in.

Not really. They can mask huge amounts of social inequality & deprivation. They often tend to be rural areas - where I live includes some of the most deprived estates in the country. Lots of food banks.

That I have noticed is that the Blue signs tend to be prominently displayed on field fences etc, when you drive through the towns you see far more Orange. (No Red around here).

Sionella · 01/06/2017 09:21

Here's where my cousins live. It's been almost consistently red since 1900.

Of course it's unreasonable to be frustrated that not everyone agrees with you. It kind of misses the point of a democracy.

The good news is, you can buy a house and move to any constituency you'd like.

howthelightgetsin · 01/06/2017 09:22

I live in a safe labour seat and I resent it too. My vote doesn't matter. I'm on mat leave so at home or about the local area all day but I've never been canvassed (I used to assume / hope they knocked when I was at work), the local labour team really can't be bothered because they know they don't need to try.

user1471545174 · 01/06/2017 09:23

They really have no clue, Sionella. It makes me laugh, though.

Oh, my area's too naice!

PhilODox · 01/06/2017 09:23

Why don't you move to a core labour constituency? Then you can experience inner city destitution, crumbling infrastructure, high unemployment, mediocre schools, overcrowded GPs etc on a daily basis.
Hmm

Thought not....

rollonthesummer · 01/06/2017 09:24

My mum lives in a Blue stronghold where the MP is so stupid he was tricked into believing that a made up drug called 'cake' was real-he even asked in the Commons what could be done about it. Does anyone remember that?!). He is still there though and has a massive majority-nobody cares.

It's so depressing.

rollonthesummer · 01/06/2017 09:25

No different to my Tory constituency then??!

user1471545174 · 01/06/2017 09:26

They literally have no clue, PhilODox. I know so many people like this. Shire socialists.

burdog · 01/06/2017 09:26

Grew up in one (but it has voted Labour twice), now live in a safe Labour seat (I think, unless UKIP get in). TBH I now wish I lived in a marginal constituency because it keeps the MP and/or council on their toes.
