(THREAD) Today's big story ISN'T Paris; when Trump is gone we'll re-up. The story is Russia PUBLICLY threatened Trump and he PUBLICLY caved.

(1) It's terrible that Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement. But—but—it's not an indication of American intentions or America's future.

(2) When Trump is impeached, the next POTUS will find a way to return us to the community of 190+ nations that signed the Paris Agreement.

(3) So the question of consequence for America—even as to Paris—is, "When will he be impeached? What story of today relates to that...?"

(4) The answer is this: on May 22 Russia publicly blackmailed the President of the United States, via its U.S. embassy. On Twitter. Read on.

(5) Knowing that Trump both consumes and creates the news on Twitter, Russia used its U.S. mouthpiece—its embassy here—to send this message: See pic

(6) Those compounds were taken from Russia by the U.S. just 155 days ago—a mere five months—as punishment for WAGING CYBER-WAR on America.

(7) Since late December Russia has done NOTHING to regain America's trust or goodwill; indeed, it did all it could to further jeopardize it.

(8) Russia meddled in a major European election (France); it helped cover up a genocidal WMD war crime (chemical weapons attack) in Syria.

(9) Putin admitted Russians were behind the hacking of the U.S. election, contradicting even Trump's own feeble claims it might not be them.

(10) That's the tip of the iceberg; Russia's geopolitical and military behavior since December has been as bad or worse than it's ever been.

(11) After interfering with an election via active measures, Russia threatened countermeasures if we didn't rescind our mild punishment.

(12) Russia's public threat to execute countermeasures against America on May 22 was the equivalent of a terroristic demand for appeasement.

(13) If there's one thing we know about Trump, it's that—like most would-be autocrats—he's obsessed with never seeming weak before an enemy.

(14) It's in THIS political context that TRUMP CAVED TO PUTIN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY when the latter issued terroristic threats against America.

(15) In the history of American diplomacy America has never so quickly caved to so foul an adversary—and for absolutely nothing in return.

(16) The news Trump plans to return these Russian compounds comes with further obscene news: he's considering dropping sanctions on Russia.

(17) All this occurs in the context of the CIA telling the BBC that Putin holds audio and video blackmail on Trump.

(18) All this occurs in the context of a report indicating the Russians also have financial kompromat on Trump.

(19) Occam's Razor: Trump acts toward a geopolitical enemy in a way America never has because our enemy has BLACKMAIL like it has never had.

(20) "Covfefe" was a distraction; in a very different way, so is today's news about the Paris Agreement. The story is a compromised POTUS.

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

lionheart · 02/06/2017 02:21

Oh dear.

CaveMum · 02/06/2017 02:26

Macron sums it up well:

"I tell you firmly tonight: We will not renegotiate a less ambitious accord. There is no way. Don't be mistaken on climate; there is no plan B because there is no planet B."

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 02/06/2017 06:59

Oh bravo Macron! That's a great statement.

Roussette · 02/06/2017 07:18

His latest tweet
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.

I cant believe this person has done what he did yesterday. I thought I was going to wake up and it would've been a horrible nightmare. Isolationist and damaging but he just doesn't care. At least the world is united against him. How can the rest of the world be wrong?

Having had spats with Trump supporters online (note to self - don't bother, they are brainwashed, it just winds me up), this resonates...

"But in Mr. Trump’s calculation, withdrawing from the accord will be a political winner.

The decision highlighted Mr. Trump’s broader political gamble as he seeks to build a presidency that can succeed in midterm elections next year and, ultimately, in 2020 when he is up for re-election. It is a strategy predicated not on attracting new supporters, but on cultivating the narrower conservative base that delivered him to the White House."

Could this honestly be the reason? He just wants to shore up his suuport ready for 2018 and 2020? Apparently by more than 5 to 1, Americans think he should be in the Paris Agreement, but if he had stayed in, he will alienate the only support he has.

"But when it came to the Paris accord, Mr. Trump accepted the argument advanced by Stephen K. Bannon, his chief strategist, that he must stick to his nationalist and populist roots or jeopardize his political future. Mr. Trump is not going to win over Democrats and most independents, Mr. Bannon maintained, so the imperative is to retain the voters who pulled the lever for him last year. Trump voters believe that the world is out to get us and that we would be the only country to live up to the accords. Therefore, America would lose and the rest of the world would laugh at us."
His paranoid statement yesterday proves that conclusively and his supporters online think that 100%. So yesterday's decision was just a vote grabber, nothing to do with the planet. Sad

California resistance

"China is the pillar now"
"Trump doesn't have the last word. This is a temporary deviation."
"Climate denial has no integrity"

Trump's approval ratings as of today.

Taking bets on how low it will go in the next week as polls are done and come out.

Lweji · 02/06/2017 07:51

And I wonder about those who think he should be impeached.
Still a bit lower than those against it. For how long?

originalbiglymavis · 02/06/2017 07:53

He really is running the country like a dodgy businessman.

TheClaws · 02/06/2017 07:53

Actually, Rousette, I think withdrawing from the Accord is just a sweetener for his base. They really don't know too much what it entails - just that it involves endorsing CLIMATE CHANGE OMG, something they won't do. The real issue is the wall. That is the cornerstone, make-or-break policy promise he must keep and make progress on - and soon - or he will lose his base. He could put on a fur hat and speak in tongues and they wouldn't care if he just built the wall.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 02/06/2017 07:56

Have we had this yet?

How the Trump administration’s secret efforts to ease Russia sanctions fell short
www.yahoo.com/news/trump-administrations-secret-efforts-ease-russia-sanctions-fell-short-231301145.html

TheClaws · 02/06/2017 07:56

Mavis He's running like a dodgy businessman building an empire - like he always has, with own businesses.

Roussette · 02/06/2017 08:07

Claws Oh god it gets worse re the wall. Isn't the writing on the wall for the wall though? It'll never get through the budget surely...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 02/06/2017 08:09

Lawrence o Donnell says that pulling out of the Paris accord benefits Russia and Saudi Arabia, who both have large oil based economies and who are struggling to maintain the price of oil high enough to sustain their economies. Increasing the demand would be one way, which is what will probably happen when they pull out.

originalbiglymavis · 02/06/2017 08:23

The claws - exactly and we don't really know if he was any good stories that either! All bluff and bluster.

Reminds me of a local factory which merrily worked away, and had a pipe running into the local river that was obviously chemical waste. No fish, weird water, no plants... But hey, they had jobs jobs jobs! MAKE SCOTLAND BIGLY!

Gumpendorf · 02/06/2017 08:23

Trump applying to Supreme Court to reinstate travel ban as expected but I get the feeling that things are speeding up now.

I'm appalled and ashamed at May's response. We are really on the wrong side of history this time.

Roussette · 02/06/2017 08:24

The fightback has started...
"Governors of New York, California, and Washington announce the formation of the "United States Climate Alliance".

Then there is a statement from them which I can't seem to link to

And on Twitter
"A guy from Texas tweeted me, said the Paris accord is to protect Paris, and they're not paying for it, America has worse problems than Trump"

Lweji · 02/06/2017 08:28

Wait until Texas becomes the Sahara.

Roussette · 02/06/2017 08:33

or Mar-a-Lago gets flooded. (Apparently, it is not impossible)

BiglyBadgers · 02/06/2017 08:37

Claws Oh god it gets worse re the wall. Isn't the writing on the wall for the wall though? It'll never get through the budget surely...

But that would be fine because then he can blame the Dems and the mythical liberal elite Hmm
