Almost too embarrassed to ask... so simple, so ignorant....

Im a long-term Lillets user... occasionally I buy Tampax as desperate and nowt else to buy....

So much stuff... Lillets, everything flushes down the loo....

Tampax - nice little paper wrapper AND double tube thing.... At home, where do you put these? Presumably neither flush....

I've spent last 3 days, carefully wrapping in loo paper and putting in bathroom bin... feel a bit ridiculous... but they feel too revealing just lying there for all to see in the bin.....

Guessing Im missing something really obvious....

I have a friend who thought it was ok to flush sanitary towels, until her drains got completely blocked with them!

But it literally says on the box "DO NOT FLUSH" Shock

DeadGood · 31/05/2017 15:44

"I have a friend who thought it was ok to flush sanitary towels"

But why?? Who the fuck thinks this?

Most people don't need to be told - it is just blindingly obvious.

Gah81 · 31/05/2017 15:45

You flush everything related to a tampon. I usually wrap everything in used loo roll at home.

Gah81 · 31/05/2017 15:45

Sigh. You BIN everything related to a tampon. Sorry - long day!

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2017 15:47

I think this s one of the issues where MN is an alternative universe to the rest of the world.

terrylene · 31/05/2017 15:47

so don't catch/give as much drag

Lube?

KY?

MoodyOne · 31/05/2017 15:48

You can get nice smelling bags . I put the used one all the packaging from the new one bob it all in TP and stick it in a bag in the bin 😊

DeadGood · 31/05/2017 15:49

"Did not know that cardboard applicators existed.

Would that not be like sandpaper?"

YoloSwaggins the cardboard has a sort of "glossy" surface on the outside so it is fairly smooth.

GloveBug · 31/05/2017 15:50

Yolo and Dead I was stunned when she told me. Just looking at the size of them surely tells you they aren't going to flush well. She genuinely had thought it was ok until the drains blocked and the plumber pulled out loads of sanitary towels Confused

ElphabaStrop · 31/05/2017 15:52

terrylene honestly, when you have endometriosis even the thought is painful. And without wishing to be too graphic 😩🙊 the KY sort of stops at the entrance instead of staying on all the way up.

Can't believe I'm typing this on a public forum. 😂😂😂

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 31/05/2017 15:54

I've always flushed tampons, up until a couple of years ago I thought they were degradable Blush

I can't and don't use them any more before people shout at me.

But yes, everything wrapped in its wrapper, wrapped in loo roll and binned. Body form pads now have sticky sides to seal the rolled up pad in. Which helps!

Captainj1 · 31/05/2017 15:54

I have a septic tank so nothing can go down the loo other than bodily fluids and toilet paper. I used to have v heavy period and fill my bin v quickly when I was on, but got the coil in January and only had one light period since - so nothing to put in the bin these days - result

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 15:55

Just looking at the size of them surely tells you they aren't going to flush well.

IKR! And they have a plastic film on the bottom!

The mind boggles...

terrylene · 31/05/2017 15:55

I have squeezed the stuff into the opening between the cardboard petals at the top as well as smearing it round. Actually, I used Yes VM - gone off KY.

(Menopausal dry vagina Wink )

CherryMintVanilla · 31/05/2017 15:56

Carry on as you are in future, wrap everything in loo roll and put it in bathroom bin. Don't flush any of that stuff!

ijustwannadance · 31/05/2017 16:00

Loving 'Dwaine Pipe'. His advice is very sensible.

KingLooieCatz · 31/05/2017 16:01

Back in time I could only get a tampon in with a plastic applicator and KY. And whale music in the background on a bad day.

Hard as it might be to believe some people's have lady bits that are not identical to yours.

These days - washable pads. Used ones are rinsed in the shower then go in the washing machine with towels.

MissBax · 31/05/2017 16:05

Huh?!?!?!

Littlepond · 31/05/2017 16:10

This is why I never use tampons! I would never flush them but there isn't always a bin!

PrinceAli · 31/05/2017 16:11

We have a second mini bin next to the toilet brush just for the girl stuff, stops my teen boy getting embarrassed

Are you kidding me? So the alternative is making any female using your bathroom feel embarrassed about their bodies? You need to sort that out. Parenting fail.

WomblingThree · 31/05/2017 16:14

I don't see the need for the anger and snark on this thread. It had never particularly occurred to me not to flush tampons. When I was a kid, the only reason you didn't flush was if you had a septic tank, then you bagged and burned.

I would imagine most people my age and older haven't really thought much about it (in the real world that is). My daughter automatically bins hers, even though I've never told her to. I haven't had periods for years.

If you want to educate people, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar!

GherkinSnatch · 31/05/2017 16:14

Dwaine Pipe Grin excellent.

OP - As others have said, only pees, poos and paper go down the loo.

To my eternal shame, until I moved out of my mum and dad's house to go to uni, I flushed everything. My mum taught me that I should be tearing the end of towels and then flushing them unless in a public loo [embarrased] Something I think came from her being raised by a single dad, and her granny didn't have disposable sanitary wear.

These days - I moon cup and cloth pad. Highly recommend giving them a whirl.

RestlessTravellerTheSequel · 31/05/2017 16:16

I can only use plastic applicator tampons, cardboard ones hurt.

I was always told to flush tampons. I only know differently from MN I think. It's not like people keep reading the box for twenty years in case there are big changes in tampon technology.

If people were less squeamish and worried about embarrassing their sons it would probably be well known and advertised
