About people smoking in beer gardens?

I know I am being U but we just got back from a lovely weekend away. Weather was fantastic and we loved sitting outside to eat and chat in the sun.
I was so annoyed with the amount of smokers using the beer garden as a smokers den. All my family smokes but I am quite sensitive to the smell! I hate walking through the crowds gathered at the door but when you're trying to eat and everyone is smoking or rather lighting cigarettes and leaving them burning away in ashtrays, it was awful.
Is it just me or would separate outdoor areas be a good idea, the smell just makes me heave! Just because you are outside doesn't mean the smoke doesn't blow in your face. if a place e is serving food should it not be separated.
Apologies to smokers I know we all have to live together, I'm not really sure what the solution is.

I just don't understand why people think that pubs should be geared around the wants and needs of pregnant women with babies and toddlers in tow?

What's wrong with some adult only spaces?

Even though I have recently been in possession of young children, going to the pub for a meal with them would not have crossed my mind. Pubs should be for for grown ups who want to meet up with their mates and socialise, put something on the juke box, play a game of chess and eat a packet of scampi fries. If they want to smoke they should be able to, outside, without further ado.

supermoon100 · 29/05/2017 21:50

Play a game of chess? ! Eh what kinda pubs do you go to? My dc's love chess!

Yes, in the same way that smokers are allowed inside.

I find it strange that you don't see the reversal of positions. or that you are repeating the same that was said when smoking was allowed inside.

"I'm the one made to stand in the beer garden in the middle of winter and in the pouring rain. The sun cones out and suddenly all you smokers are in my space and moaning."

BillyButtfuck · 29/05/2017 22:08

Those saying about adult only spaces, I don't disagree with that but when I go on a rare outing without my children, I still don't want to be inhaling second hand smoke or have the smell lingering around whilst I eat.

AngryGinger · 29/05/2017 22:09

Do you think hint sections will work? How does that work outdoors? There only has to be one gust of wind and the smell is everywhere. I don't smoke but take no issue with those that choose to do so outdoors

PuckeredAhole · 29/05/2017 22:12

Smokers should be made to feel like pariahs. Awful habit that ruins lives. I have no sympathy. I don't give a toss where they conduct their filthy habit. Just don't do it around me and my loved ones.

DarthMaiden · 29/05/2017 22:13

I'm generally of a mindset that there's a degree of mutual respect that if everyone abided to would resolve most of the issues.

I smoke. I was at a pub yesterday in the lovely sunshine. Next to me was a family with a tiny baby. I could have lit up at my table, but I didn't. I moved away to a non populated area and had my fag. I wasn't asked - I just did it.

I also don't smoke outside next to people eating. I just think it's rude.

On the other hand a few weeks ago I was sitting outside having a fag at a non food pub and a couple sat down at the table next to me and then asked me to stop smoking. I told them to sit on one of the other available tables if it offended them. Apparently they wanted "this" table. I kept on smoking...

Bizarrely, I disagree. But I do think that smokers bring a lot of the issues on themselves as they rarely take others in to consideration.

How lovely

Certainly!
I personally would rather not have judgmental and ignorant people around me, but it's life Grin

*I just don't understand why people think that pubs should be geared around the wants and needs of pregnant women with babies and toddlers in tow?

Because some people think everything dhould be kid orientated and nothing should be adult only.

OhTallulah · 30/05/2017 06:42

I wish kids had to be taken home at eight pm in England, local pub to us often has children in until 11pm on a Sunday when they also do a quiz night, despite numerous complaints to the landlord and the brewery, Greene King.
The newish LL thinks we're all a bunch of old meanies and GK haven't been very helpful either but having children literally running around late in the evening isn't why adults go to pubs and a lot of the regulars have voted with their feet and gone elsewhere.
It's an old pub but it will probably be flats in a few years time.

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 30/05/2017 07:13

It's quite easy for a pub to cordon off an area of smokers like cafes used to when we lived in the appalling times of forcing young children to breathe in smoke off the cancer sticks (mum in looking at you for fucking up my lungs for life!). Personally I'd like to see smoking banned in all public places but whilst the govt get so much tax it's not happening

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 30/05/2017 07:17

Oh Tallilah. Really?? I'd like to find that pub! We have a local cafe bar (one of the Loungers chain) that's so kid friendly and the land lord makes it clear there are plenty of local pubs if people don't like sharing space with kids. In most of Europe kids are welcome with open arms in places that serve food and beer.

expatinscotland · 30/05/2017 08:22

You'd love Scottish licensing laws, Tallulah.

bailz · 30/05/2017 08:45

Smoking isn't a great habit no, but smokers are still people for fucks sake!
You can't just herd them up and refuse to let them do things or treat them any differently because you don't like their habit.
I agree that smokers should be considerate, but so should non-smokers. Yes smoking isn't good for you, but neither is that double vodka and coke or that portion of chips your munching on.

PuckeredAhole · 30/05/2017 08:54

How am I being ignorant about smoking? Pretty sure it's black and white. Smoking causes cancer for the smoker and the people unfortunate to inhale. Lung cancer kills more people than bowel, breast and prostate combined. My dad is a never smoker and has just been diagnosed with lung cancer so you can shove your smokers attitude where the sun doesn't shine. I'm fed up of people with your attitude trying to normalise smoking. You are a smoking sympathiser in denial and I know plenty of those. Will not even admit that the illnesses people get are as a direct result of smoking. Many smokers think they're untouchable and nothing will ever happen to them.

Smoking deniers will not take on board my words and will say they've heard it all before. I am not judgemental. The truth just hurts.

PuckeredAhole · 30/05/2017 08:56

Bailz a double vodka is not as bad for your health as a smoking habit. Come on, you don't really believe that do you ????

Another smoking sympathiser who will say anything to justify smoking.

bailz · 30/05/2017 09:00

@PuckeredAhole never once said they were the same. I said that drinking alcohol and eating chips isn't good for you either. Please don't put words in my mouth

In principle, I don't have a problem with the idea of smoking and non-smoking outside areas, but what happens when the wind changes and all the smoke drifts over to the non-smoking areas?

rocketman3 · 30/05/2017 10:13

IA 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The other day at lunch I deliberately took my baby to the very far end of garden where no one was sitting. very large garden, tons of options and was still joined by a table of inconsiderate smokers after 10 mins. Luckily my inconsiderate baby shrieked the place down and got them to move that way Grin

user1471441839 · 30/05/2017 10:23

Bailz you can't compare vodka and chips with smoking. Drinking vodka and eating chips doesn't affect the health of the people around you in the way smoking does.

supermoon100 · 30/05/2017 10:33

Bailz I don't think the anti smoking brigade have a problem with what you decide to put into your body, be it nicotine, alcohol or fat, if you are not affecting anyone else. Smoking in public does affect others. You can't really compare smoking to vodka and chips!
