something strange is going on isn't it?

New neighbours moved in a few months ago. A couple and I think 3 children. Lots of stuff was moved in toys etc etc.
Then they went and didn't see anyone for a few days ...never actually saw the mother and children again just saw a man return a few days after
Some parcels arrived which I took in-maybe 4 in the space of a week, picked up by various people all very polite and nice. I assumed relatives.

Then....nothing. Literally nothing. Never see anyone. Never hear anyone. Terraced houses so you always hear front doors closing....nothing.
Had someone knock twice asking if I knew were next door in.
The weird thing is we NEVER see the children, apart from that first moving in day-they never are around at school time morning or aft and were school age. Perhaps they are home schooled I thought?
Never ever in the garden.

Once I stepped outside and the other side of the fence I heard somebody rush back in so there is somebody there. It's just eerily quiet.
We've had by mistake a fair bit of post too and there seem to be a few adults living there if the post is anything to go by. I just put it through the door the first couple of times then with the last three I've knocked but no answer so then posted it.

AIBU to think it's strange?

Was wondering how long before the first 'report it' would be mentioned!

Ontheboardwalk · 27/05/2017 22:21

They've seen the billion posts on here about noisy neighbours and are scared of people complaining and them ending up with a letter?

Enjoy it while it lasts!

MrNobodytheNeighbour · 27/05/2017 22:21

I don't know, there seems to be a few adults registered there officially but we don't see anyone so it's not a case of potential fraud and just a different set of people living there there seems to be nobody there.
The person who made a hasty retreat front he garden was not long after they moved in and I've seen or heard nothing since so I really dont think it's that I feel like there's just nobody living there at all

Wife has moved on and taken the kids with her - or this is the second marriage for him and he only has his kids over some of the time.

Lucked · 27/05/2017 22:23

Maybe they want children to finish up the term at current school and are staying with relatives until the summer.

7Days · 27/05/2017 22:23

Enjoy it, I say, OP. Not only the silence but also the mystery.

MrNobodytheNeighbour · 27/05/2017 22:24

Could be I suppose lucked it is just so quiet and as time has gone on I can't believe we haven't seen anyone at all

Report it to the council OP. The sooner they can start looking into it the easier it will be to get the house back if it is was fraudulent application.

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 27/05/2017 22:28

Keep an eye out for black bags appearing on the washing line. . Then it's time to really get concerned. ...

MrNobodytheNeighbour · 27/05/2017 22:32

Black bags?

cannabis farm
Are the curtains always closed?

SomeOtherFuckers · 27/05/2017 22:38

Maybe their move in day coincided with a holiday so they moved stuff in and went away leaving relatives to pick up mail occasionally or water plants etc ( maybe the friends/relatives weren't supposed to go in the house but were nosying the garden and so rushed inside when you came out lol )
Or the family was a cover for a secret smuggling business/ crack den and the man is the contact 😉

walmo · 27/05/2017 22:38

Do the lights come on at night?

confuugled1 · 27/05/2017 22:39

I think I'd report it too - there are too many reports in the papers of instances where neighbours have had a gut feeling that something was wrong about 'next door' but not reported - and then something happens (whole host of things from kids being kept locked in their rooms all the time, to cannabis farms, to people using it as an address to get into a school and so on) that they wish they had reported earlier...

I think it's easy these days to not to want to get involved and to worry that you will be seen as nosy or interfering or meddling. It might well be something simple like they're very religious and home school and don't allow TVs and radios. Or they've had to go away for a few weeks. But if you tell the authorities then it becomes their issue, not yours, and you can then forget about it for a while...

sobeyondthehills · 27/05/2017 22:41

MI6 undercover agent, needs to pretend s/he has a wife/husband and family.

someone getting their ducks in a row before leaving a marriage

An unusual family set up 1 wife/2 husbands or 1 husband 2 wives

I could probably think of loads

LeninaCrowne · 27/05/2017 22:42

You need to ask Roger what he thinks!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 27/05/2017 22:45

You could always contact the local council with your concerns?

Beachhairdontcare · 27/05/2017 22:45

Could it have been a health visitor or perhaps a social worker that knocked on the door looking for them?

It does indeed sound very strange. When you spoke to the people collecting post what nationality were they? They may have been immigrants that have since moved on?

Justaboy · 27/05/2017 22:46

They haven't just cleared of on holiday somewhere?.

MrNobodytheNeighbour · 27/05/2017 22:47

Occasionally the bathroom light is on , that's all. It's been about 9/10 months since they moved in so quite a while

Immediately made me think of my neighbours! When they first moved in we exchanged pleasentaries, 4 boys all primary age, then all this CCTV started going up round the house (v quiet area in countryside small village) lots of official peeps arriving in suits, one day black SUV with 4 tough & smart looking blokes in. I was 😵! Those 4 boys NEVER played outside. Never heard them. Convinced witness protection or something?
About 6 weeks in pulled up on drive at same time as the dad with 5yr old. He promptly told me that his mum was 'psycho' and stole all the money (the 5yr old not the dad! The dad was mortified but opened up said they'd had all 4 brothers 2 years now) Turns out 4 kids are fostered. Traumatic background, parents not allowed access for now hence high security etc. Could it be something similar? We also got a lot of post for their address not them, turns out the SIL has an online shopping habit she doesn't want husband to know about so gets all her crap delivered there as someone (bloody me!!!) is always around the other collect it!
Anyhow just a thought!

WellErrr · 27/05/2017 22:52

If your instinct tells you it's odd then report it.
If there's no problem then no harm done.

AgathaRaisonDetra · 27/05/2017 22:52

I'd report them, get them evicted, and then a nice family will move in who block your driveway with their cars and piss in your wheelie bins.

Beelzebop · 27/05/2017 22:54

I reckon drugs manufacture place with someone forced to look after it, hence hiding.

MrNobodytheNeighbour · 27/05/2017 22:58

Surely we would either smell drugs if it was cannabis or there would be people coming and going to collect/deliver if it was drugs ?

Witness protection it similar I suppose could be a possibility. The letters were all dwp except one which had a court stamp on it
