To take my baby to the walk in centre

NameChanger4000 · 25/05/2017 21:17

Me and my baby (6 months old) were out enjoying the sunshine today. He was topped up with sun cream, kept in the shade and wore a hat. But ever since we got home one of his eyes has seemed red and swollen. In the last hour it's started running as well. I think he might have somehow sunburnt his eye (is this even possible?)
There was around 10 minutes were I held him in my arms looking for his hat that DS (4) had thrown into some trees.

We have a GP appointment tomorrow anyway for his eczema but I think I should take him to out of hours with his eye now. DH making me doubt myself though- calling me precious and ridiculous. Any advice?

A simple case of sunburn wouldn't even register on Social Services radar, even if your child got a sunburn that needed medical treatment the most follow up you would get is a talk from the doctor about sun safety and the HV ringing you the next day with a further polite reminder about sun safety. A Social Services referral would only be made if there were safeguarding concerns. Your mother talks a load of shite.

He's probably got some sun cream in his eye or even a touch of conjunctivitis and it's just coincidence that it's come on tonight. Don't give him piriton, it's not suitable for under ones (I don't think so anyway, been a while since I checked the bottle) but do bathe it. If yours breastfeeding then you can use expressed milk and cotton wool to give it a wash or cooled, boiled water and cotton wool.

His eye should be fine, your mother is a far bigger problem. Flowers

Imnotaslimjim · 25/05/2017 21:43

It sounds most likely that he's sweated and got suncream in his eye.

Boil some water, let it cool and then rinse his eye with it. Unless you breastfeed - if you do, use breast milk, it's awesome for DC's eyes.

Fruitcorner123 · 25/05/2017 21:43

Is there a late night pharmacy in your area? You could ask a pharmacist.

I would say with GP appointment tomorrow you can probably wait.

IJustLostTheGame · 25/05/2017 21:44

Could he have scratched his eye or reacted to cream in it?
He won't have burnt his eye, don't panic.
And contrary to your mother's questionable beliefs accidents happen and social services won't be interested.
If it isn't bothering him I'd maybe calpol it to be safe, carefully wipe any eye goo away with a wet cotton pad and show the GP in the morning.
However he's your baby and your call and you will know best.

3luckystars · 25/05/2017 21:44

Bring baby to the doctor. It could just be a sore eye! Even newborns get that, you cant cause it.

Cut off your mother. She will destroy your confidence.

ohfourfoxache · 25/05/2017 21:45

Fucking hell - do yourself a massive favour and block your mother. She sounds like a grade A bitch

eurochick · 25/05/2017 21:46

I also thought it's probably sunscreen sweated into his eye. I agree with the pp who suggested bathing with cooled boiled water. However we can't see it - if your instinct says it is something more than that, get him checked out.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 25/05/2017 21:46

My DS had very similar and it turned out to be just hayfever as I had expected. You can get eyedrops for.under 1's from the pharmacist but definitely worth a mention at the GP tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

Spudlet · 25/05/2017 21:47

Your mum sounds a peach. He's probably just got some suncream in his eye - give it a good bathe with cooled boiled water. And turn off your phone, and keep it off. Your mum is vile not helping.

TheLegendOfBeans · 25/05/2017 21:48

Maybe you need to go to the GP and find a cure for your DM.

She sounds wonderful.

BritInUS1 · 25/05/2017 21:50

Can you bathe it with some cold boiled water and cotton wool?

WomblingThree · 25/05/2017 21:51

Baby will be fine. Your mother on the other hand 😮. There's a reason phones have the ability to block numbers. In future, just don't tell her stuff she can use against you.

Girlsworld92 · 25/05/2017 21:52

Don't want to scaremonger but does it look anything like this? If so you do need to get it checked out sooner rather than later. It could be a condition called cellitius which can be serious. My lo had it and needed antibiotics

DancingLedge · 25/05/2017 21:53

Is the eyeball itself bothering baby? Rubbing at it with hands? If so, needs seen .

If not, tomorrow will do.

Words fail me on your ' D'M. That sounds so spiteful. Sorry she's giving you a hard time.

Miniwookie · 25/05/2017 21:53

If it is your Mum's horrible comments rather than your own instincts, definitely wait for tomorrow. She sounds awful Flowers The eye sounds minor. Mention it to the docs tomorroe. Flash burns? WTF?

NameChanger4000 · 25/05/2017 21:53

I can normally handle my mum but the PND is so bad this time I am struggling anyway. Think it's time to go low contact for now.

Will try cooled boiled water when he next wakes up.

Another one here saying to stay away from your mother, she sounds very toxic!!

Girlsworld92 · 25/05/2017 21:54

She had no pain at all just woke up one day with it and someone advised me to get it checked out

NameChanger4000 · 25/05/2017 21:56

It doesn't look anywhere near that red/ painful Girls.

He was rubbing his eye.

Girlsworld92 · 25/05/2017 21:58

Ah good. Maybe just got scratched or something. I'd mention it to the docs when you go. Hope all is ok.

intergalacticbrexitdisco · 25/05/2017 22:02

Your mother is a toxic cow. Sorry. I'm not surprised your pnd is bad with that rubbish being bleated at you. Pnd is hard enough on its own - I know!

Wipe the eye out with a fresh cotton ball for each pass and cooled, boiled water. Add a very tiny pinch of salt, if you want. Or use breastmilk, as a pp suggested, if you can.
Nothing bad is going to happen, OP. If it was serious, you would know.

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 25/05/2017 22:03

We've just recently had this, DS was sent home from nursery. Took him to the pharmacist and they reckoned it was just sun cream in his eye. Good night's sleep and he was absolutely fine the next day. Hope yours is 'just' this too!

butterfly990 · 25/05/2017 22:04

I got sun cream in my eye and the thing that helped me was a cold used tea bag.

My step mum put a used tea bag in the freezer and after half an hour or so gave it to me to hold over my eyes.

I had to repeat the process a couple of times but it was very effective.

innagazing · 25/05/2017 22:11

when you bathe his eye, make sure you always wipe it from the outer side towards the inner part ( where the tear duct is).
