to be jealous of friends baby sleeping through?

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 25/05/2017 18:58

I know this sounds really bad, but after seeing friend I felt a pang of jealousy that her 6 week old dd sleeps through and has done for the last 4 weeks.
I know I shouldn't compare, I think I'm just hormonal - and still very sleep deprived haha!

From my experience talking with other mums, babies seem to pick which way round they will sleep. If baby is sleeping through from an early age they won't when they get a bit older and vice verse! My DS was one of those babies that slept through from 4 weeks till around 16 weeks and now I'm lucky if I get 2 hours sleep in a row from him at night! a few ladies in the sensory class I attend have babies that are sleeping through. Ow but didn't to start so it's all subject to change. But I don't blame you for feeling jealous! I know I would

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 25/05/2017 19:03

6 weeks old and sleeps through?? Possible but I highly doubt this is the norm. Understand your jealousy and tiredness. Baby is still so little and needs feeds through the night,
My DD is 7 months and sleeps 7:00 - 8:30pm, has top up/dream feed, and on a good night then sleeps til 5.00am and on a bad night 3:30/4:00am. She went from 2 night feeds to one, then none once she established on solids at 5 1/2 months. She was prem and only 4lbs at birth if that makes a difference. It does get better!

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 25/05/2017 19:04

If it makes you feel any better my baby is 6 months old and woke up every 2 hours last night and have never slept through!! You're not alone!

FATEdestiny · 25/05/2017 19:09

See I had one sleeping through (12h uninterputed) from 7 weeks old onwards.

Followed by next child doing the same by about 12 months old.

But this never concerned me. I wasn't jealous that this baby wasn't. I think the reason I was unconcerned was because it was DC3 sleeper, then DC4 who was less so. Unlike with my PFB, I had the experience behind me to fully understand why DC4 wasn't sleeping through - it wasn't my parenting - and that she was making constant progress to better sleeping.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/05/2017 19:11

Are you 100% certain. Her baby sleeps through the night. You only live your own baby. Its very easy, for people to claim their little poppet sleeps for 6pm-8am. For all you knis she could be sitting there as we type. Tearing her hair out trying to pacify him. Noone what goes on in private

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 25/05/2017 19:12

I don't think it sounds bad at all - that's pretty much exactly what sleep deprived parents don't want to hear!

Are you quite sure they're being 100% truthful? GrinWink Sleeping through from 2 weeks is fairly unusual...

toffeeboffin · 25/05/2017 19:12

'Sleeping through' meaning what exactly? How many hours at a time? (skeptical)

toffeeboffin · 25/05/2017 19:13

Only asking as DD (5 months) slept from 8.30pm - 4am the other night, which I consider sleeping through. More than 6 hours is 'through' for me.

ems137 · 25/05/2017 19:13

YANBU at all.

My toddler only started sleeping through at around 14 months old and it was incredibly hard to cope with at times.

My mum and dad tell me that I slept through from around 2 weeks old and very very rarely woke up in the night after that point. They were lucky!

CrispyBathTowel · 25/05/2017 19:13

How long is the baby going without being feed?? At 6 weeks it shouldn't be going 8-12hrs (which is the definition of sleeping through to me) without a feed Shock

CeCeBloomer · 25/05/2017 19:13

Mine didn't sleep through until 2.5 yrs! That said I now just put her in bed say goodnight and see her 12 hrs later. It's amazing and I never thought I would get to this point. Ds who is 6 months is still waking 3/4 times on average but I am well trained now

loveulotslikejellytots · 25/05/2017 19:14

My friend used to boast that her (4 month old) baby slept through. 11pm - 5am is what she meant by sleeping through. Each to their own but I much preferred dd going to bed at 7pm, waking for a feed at 1am then sleeping till 6am. And even that only lasted a couple of months! Grin Then she started teething and got a cold, it all went to shit! Up every 2 hours and took at least 40 minutes to settle back down. That lasted a couple of months, then she went back to sleeping a bit better.

Do yourself a favour and either don't listen and don't compare or just take everything with a massive pinch of salt. Your baby might sleep through eventually or they might not. But I've learnt that there is not much you can do to make them sleep through.

GeillisTheWitch · 25/05/2017 19:15

Mine slept through from around midnight until 7am ish at 6 weeks but I was paid back for it later, not with sleeping but with majorly fussy eating and food refusing that went on from weaning until she went to school. My theory is that she didn't wake for feeds anymore because she just wasn't a hungry baby/child but the food refusing had me weeping with frustration many, many times so don't be jealous just yet, her baby could yet be a problem toddler.

DontFundHate · 25/05/2017 19:16

Absolutely won't last!

TheLegendOfBeans · 25/05/2017 19:16

Unhelpful post but my DD "slept through" (7-7) from approx 16weeks. Personally I kept it buttoned around d other mums as I know how insensitive it would make me sound.

My DD is - I think - the anomaly. IMHO wakers are the norm, at least until 9m give or take.

YANBU.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 25/05/2017 19:17

Her baby could get a sleep regression at 4 months.
I wouldn't sweat it. My dd didn't sleep through until about 10 months but now she is the best sleeper out of all the kiddies I know

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 25/05/2017 19:22

Apparently from 9pm-7am Shock
My 1 year old still doesn't sleep through and my 4 year old never has! (Has ASD and medicated for sleep but it still doesn't work!)
Beginning to think I'm going wrong somewhere?!

I've got three, 2 slept through 7pm to 6am from 6 weeks.

One didn't, the same one now aged 5 still doesn't and still wakes for cuddles most nights Confused

All babies are different... and her next one might be even worse Wink

hibbledobble · 25/05/2017 19:26

You aren't going wrong, different children are different.

I have done the same with all of mine (feeding on demand, exclusive breastfeeding, letting them dictate the routine). One didn't sleep through till well over a year, one slept through from a few months old, and one slept through from 4 weeks.

CheshireChat · 25/05/2017 19:28

What does she mean by sleeping through though? When I first read your post I thought DS did the same, then thought again and realised it was quite a lot later when he ditched his night feed. And then had a bad patch around 6 months as he wasn't eating enough to sleep properly, but wasn't having milk because he was eating IYKWIM.

Bettyspants · 25/05/2017 19:29

Grinmy six year old doesn't sleep through and never has! Some people are lucky and others have normal babies 👶

Enidblyton1 · 25/05/2017 19:30

Your friend is either lying or her baby is EXTREMELY unusual. Either way, you shouldn't compare your children to hers.

Jenijena · 25/05/2017 19:33

I'll join you in the unreasonable boat. Having had one atrocious sleeper I thought I deserved a reasonable one this time. Turns out the universe did not agree...

Zzzz

(14 months)

TheWeaverOfNonStories · 25/05/2017 19:36

Every baby is completely different, they all need differing amounts of sleep and they all have differing sleep patterns.

Mine did 6 hours at 3 months, 9 months and 12 months and with all 3 10-12 hours took a few weeks extra. I've a friend whose child slept no more than 3 hours at once until she was 4 and didn't do 10 hours until she was about 5. Another had a baby who did 12 hours from 2 weeks old (although she dream fed every 4-6 hours on advice of midwife) it's a lottery.
