To think this is a sickening amount to spend on my hair?

MrsMachin · 25/05/2017 17:52

A colleague was shocked to hear how much I spend getting my hair done. I really didn't think it was that extraordinate an amount. Then I sat down and worked it all out.

£40 for a trim, deep clean and blow dry (every four months)
£60 for a full head of colour (every three months)
£35 for full head of highlights and lowlights (every six weeks)

It comes to £640 a year in total. That's not including shampoos, conditioners, nourishing masques, styling sprays, heat defence sprays, hairspray, and basics such as bobbles, kirbies and Velcro rollers. In addition to this I have three pairs of straighteners, three curling wands of various sizes, two hairdriers and a multi-purpose thingamajig, which cost hundreds altogether.

Is this way too much? Really hoping someone else spends an even worse amount than me..

I pay:

£135 1/2 head highlights every 6 weeks
£80 cut/b dry every 8 weeks

OP yours is nothing! Enjoy your hair!

Oblomov17 · 26/05/2017 10:05

Drip drip... so it's actually quite a lot, with all the other beauty treatments. Fine if you can afford it. I'm not sure what you are really asking? Hmm

Oblomov17 · 26/05/2017 10:07

But you don't go on holiday? Err why?
And no pot noddles? Well. That's just criminal.

juliej75 · 26/05/2017 10:41

I spend £50 on my annual haircut. But that doesn't mean I'm either surprised or shocked at £600 odd - actually sounds very good value given what you have done, and it clearly makes you feel good too. Everyone's a winner Grin I was certainly expecting a much higher number when I clicked on this thread!

And while obviously not taking my own advice, I'd also agree that spending money on your hair is more worthwhile than lots of things because you 'wear' it every day. Same with spending a lot on glasses that really suit you.

CoughingForWeeks · 26/05/2017 10:50

It sounds like a lot to me but then I hate going to the hairdressers. I'd rather go to the dentist than the hairdressers and yes, I know that makes me weird!

PurpleMinionMummy · 26/05/2017 11:00

You can deep clean hair????

Fishfingersandwich9 · 26/05/2017 11:04

That's less than £2 a day and I think nice hair makes such a difference to appearance, as much of not more than clothes, so I would say that is well worth it! If it makes you feel good and you can afford it then go for it!

RightOnTheEdge · 26/05/2017 11:15

I am completely Shock at the money some of you spend on your hair.
At my local salon it costs about £70 for a colour and cut and I always love it.

I can't afford it very often though because £70 seems a massive amount to spend on myself.

I'm not bitchy or judgey about the posters who spend a lot though. Just very envious! EnvyGrin

FluffyPersian · 26/05/2017 11:22

I spend £270 every three months getting my hair chemically straightened. Despite having 2 white parents and being white, I've got a genetic 'twist' and have afro hair... Not just 'frizzy', but really, really afro, so I go to a salon that specialises in relaxing / straightening.

I also get my hair conditioned once a month, costing £45

So in 3 months, it's £45 + £45 + £270

So for a year it's £1440

It's a lot, however after enduring severe bullying throughout my childhood, I prioritise making my hair look 'normal' and it's gone from the thing I hate the most about myself to the thing I love about myself as it's blonde, incredibly long (past my bum) and thick.....

MusicToMyEars800 · 26/05/2017 11:30

I spend between £40-50 for a wash, cut and blow dry every 6 months.
I buy nice shampoo and conditioner which is £15 every month or so
hair oil is £10 but that lasts ages.
A good hair brush £12.50.
I don't think you spend too much OP, I would do the same If I could afford it.

YoloSwaggins · 26/05/2017 12:06

Sorry, I think that is a LOT. It is extortionate.

My hair grows really slowly though, so I only get it cut every 3-6 months. I get a Groupon voucher or do it when visiting my family in Russia - so £20ish for Groupon, £8 in Russia. Brilliant haircuts.

I do all colouring at home - recently got a Groupon deal for a cut, balayage and blowdry for £45. She did an amazing job, whereas my friend paid £150 for the same thing!

Sorry, I think £640 is wasted on hair and unneccessary. I'd rather go on 2 holidays.

IHaveACrapCat · 26/05/2017 13:23

I got my first grey at 12, now 20 years later I'm almost 100% grey and if I didn't dye it I would look about twenty years older than I am.

I pay £50 for hi lights every 5 weeks, so my costs are similar to yours OP. I used box dyes for years but they never looked that great.

I work in a very professional and well paid job and like looking "together". I LOVE my hair and think it's worth every penny.

WeAllHaveWings · 26/05/2017 14:03

I go every 6 weeks and it alternates between £33 for cut n blow dry, and £65 for colour, cut and blow dry. So less than you but I'm in a town where it is a bit cheaper. My city friends pay upwards of £120 when they go for a colour.

MrsMachin · 26/05/2017 19:57

In response to the hairdressers over holidays question - I don't go on holiday any more and haven't done so for several years because I find it difficult with four young children, two of which have additional needs.

OP posts:
IHaveACrapCat · 26/05/2017 20:09

I hope no one was suggesting you couldn't afford a holiday because you'd spent all your money on your hair OP.

I doubt you'd get much of a holiday for 6 people put of £650 awaits to be told otherwise

We're going camping this year, in Britain, as our main holiday. More because I cba than because we can't afford it.

Had my hair done today and it looks fabulous

MrsMachin · 26/05/2017 20:19

Thanks IHaveACrapCat. I think a few people were maybe wondering why I chose to spend that much on my hair instead of on holidays.

OP posts:
Roomster101 · 26/05/2017 20:29

I spend a lot less but I only have a trim every three months. I don't think you spend a lot considering you have it coloured.

Middleoftheroad · 26/05/2017 20:31

my hair is problematic.
First grey at 19.... now 43 and prob about 60 percent grey and whit wiry.
gave up on pricey base colour and highliggts. went blonde all over (my natural dark brown) yuk. started dyeing box dark bown kept getting darker.

now need hair doing every 4 weeks at 70 coliur cut alternate times and base colour. for past few weeks been getting weekly blow dry at 16 for lovely shiny hairdresser hair. now used to it as my hair always looks shit normally

so over 100 a month.

BuzzKillington · 26/05/2017 20:35

My place charges £65 for a wet cut (i.e. you have a shampoo and cut but no blow dry).

I pay an obscene amount for colour.

For balance, our dog's haircuts are £30 every six weeks.

HildaOg · 26/05/2017 20:45

Not much. If it makes you look and feel good then it's worth it.

SingingTunelessly · 26/05/2017 21:59

Not too much at all, MrsMachin. Your hair and money = your choice.

The poster who said - "Sorry, I think £640 is wasted on hair and unneccessary. I'd rather go on 2 holidays." Seriously?! Two holidays for a family of 6 for £640? Shock. I don't think so.

ScruffbagsRUs · 26/05/2017 22:18

If you can afford it, go right ahead.

I don't go to a hair salon as I hate it.

ramon25 · 06/06/2017 11:28

Hi, I'm a freelance hairstylist and offer very competitive prices
Se my post: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/local_richmond_upon_thames/2947035-Hairdressing-Home-visits-for-busy-mums

gluteustothemaximus · 06/06/2017 11:33

I'm down the other end of the scale! Never get hair cut, or styled.

It's long and always looks good. Buy shampoo on offer. Probably spend £20 a year on hair products.

Wouldn't begrudge what anyone else does with their hair.

DS and DH I cut their hair at home to save money, and DD has lovely long uncut hair too.

problembottom · 06/06/2017 11:39

For me it's £160 every two months for half a head of highlights and a cut and blow with a style director at my local salon. Yours doesn't sound too bad to me but it will sound a lot to your colleague if she spends little on her own hair. Don't sweat it, everyone's different. A friend of mine just spent £300 on buying balayage extensions from the US... she already has fabulous hair as well!
