To think this is a sickening amount to spend on my hair?

A colleague was shocked to hear how much I spend getting my hair done. I really didn't think it was that extraordinate an amount. Then I sat down and worked it all out.

£40 for a trim, deep clean and blow dry (every four months)
£60 for a full head of colour (every three months)
£35 for full head of highlights and lowlights (every six weeks)

It comes to £640 a year in total. That's not including shampoos, conditioners, nourishing masques, styling sprays, heat defence sprays, hairspray, and basics such as bobbles, kirbies and Velcro rollers. In addition to this I have three pairs of straighteners, three curling wands of various sizes, two hairdriers and a multi-purpose thingamajig, which cost hundreds altogether.

Is this way too much? Really hoping someone else spends an even worse amount than me..

I spend about £250 a year in getting my hair cut and I just have it short and natural colour. It soon adds up, even if you don't pay loads, each visit.

SnoutFish · 25/05/2017 20:08

Shock I spend about £50 for a wash and cut which is the cheapest I can find around here. I'd love to get my hair cut now, but am waiting until closer to the holidays. I can really only justify going once a year. I get it cut short so at the end of the year it's still manageable! I'm a bit worried about dealing with turning grey.

Leavesandburies · 25/05/2017 20:16

I'm not into hair but I recon I spend about £120 on cuts and highlights and £15 on shampoo and conditioner a year. Could probably do with more than two cuts/highlights a year.

MrsMachin · 25/05/2017 20:24

SnoutFish me too, my first grey really shocked me but I've pretty much stopped realising now! It definitely gets easier Grin

Queen thank you - that's my bedtime reading sorted tonight!

But I don't know the first thing about getting my hair coloured and how I'm going to save to do it [hopes has good hair genes and won't have to worry for a while]

Sionella · 25/05/2017 20:31

My cut and colour is about £280. I also use expensive shampoo and conditioner because otherwise my hair is like pubes. So I am far far worse Blush

Catra · 25/05/2017 20:34

I have a cut and colour every 3 months at £70 a time, totalling £280 per year. However, I have hair that generally behaves itself and looks in good condition. If it didn't, I wouldn't be averse to spending more.

Do whatever makes you happy! who cares if others think its pricey..if you work hard for your money then spend as you wish Wink

MrsMachin · 25/05/2017 20:41

Snout home box dyes are relatively easy to do yourself and you can get some that are specifically aimed at tackling greys (when you get them!). Plus, they're mostly under a tenner.

Sounds reasonable to me. I've going to the hairdresser's, probably go once a month, either for a blot dry or for roots and highlights. But I use cheap supermarket shampoo because - unless you have problem hair - anything over a fiver and you're paying for marketing costs rather than a genuinely superior product.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/05/2017 21:00

£127 every 5 weeks for cut and colour so around £1320 per annum.

CountessYgritte · 25/05/2017 21:47

Mrs Machin - how long do the lash implants last? I have lash and brow tinting but my lashes are short and fine. I'd love longer lashes!
Can you tell me about them? Smile

Sionella · 25/05/2017 22:19

the individual lashes are amazing!! but it takes ages, is high maintenance, and if you do it back to back for a while, your own lashes can fall out. so i do it a couple of times a year. love it!!

BadLad · 26/05/2017 04:55

I'm astounded by how much some women spend on their hair - I spend about seven pounds every three months. I'm not shocked by it - it's up to them what they spend their money on - just amazed. Did your friend actually say anything judgey? If not, perhaps she too was astonished, rather than shocked.

MrsLucyEmerson · 26/05/2017 05:38

Also, it totally depends on your income and outgoing. Nobody can tell you you are doing the right thing without first knowing that your children are not going without in favour of your hair!

elkegel · 26/05/2017 05:54

YANBU, but I spend a lot less. Spend £40 on a cut and blow dry every couple of months and colour it myself at similar intervals. So probably spend

flumpybear · 26/05/2017 05:56

My hair is quite low maintenance IMO and I spend approx £400 in the hairdressers a year with cut and high light so no, I think what you spend is fine

user1491572121 · 26/05/2017 06:01

I have a friend who spends 200 a month!!

My God. Her hair doesn't even look that amazing!

Viviene · 26/05/2017 06:23

I spend £90 every month and I look EXACTLY the same Before and after.

LauraMoon · 26/05/2017 06:28

I used to spend £120 a month on a choppy bob with highlights.

Now it's long and I buy box bleach and dye it different colours every few weeks. It's currently candy floss pink. Cost me a tenner Grin

ElleDubloo · 26/05/2017 06:40

I spend £30-50 on a cut and blow dry every 1-2 years. It gets cut to shoulder length each time and regrows to quite long, then I get it cut when I feel like it. Other than that I use a regular supermarket shampoo and conditioner, and, erm, a hair brush sometimes Blush

I'm not a slob. I have fairly smooth, straight-ish hair with a slight natural wave that I like. No greys yet, but I'm not planning to dye when I do get grey, as I think I'd rather look my true age.

dudsville · 26/05/2017 06:46

I'm not shocked at the cost, but at the frequency an assumed duration of salon visits! I go every 2 months, for an hour or less for a wash trim and blow dry. £70 a visit, so £420. I probably spend £80 - £100 on shampoo and conditioner a year.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 26/05/2017 06:52

Yanbu, bit judgey of her to be shocked at how you spend your own money.

Personally, I got into the habit of cutting my own hair (using videos on you tube) out of a combination of being broke and hating going to the hairdressers. But everyone else I know gets theirs done properly!

DJBaggySmalls · 26/05/2017 06:52

I dont think mens products and styling cost this much.

thethoughtfox · 26/05/2017 09:57

I used to pay £130 every 2 months for highlights and a 'treatment' masque thing. But now pay more £189 for balayage and Olapex treatment so only need it done every 6 months so saving money!
