my MIL gave me an Orchid. i had no clue what to do with it. I have it i. the kitchen window. it used to sit in a clear plastic container (basically a lunch box ☺) in the pot that it came, in a lot of water (which went a bit green) until I bought a ceramic type pot and stuck it in that. Seems ok. keeps flowering. I have probably jinxed it.
Possibly the flowers just fell off, if your cleaner moved it to clean under or behind it.

acquilegiannie · 26/05/2017 21:42

Woo hoo I have a cleaner

And a shorn orchid.

So.....

Lavendarhillslob · 26/05/2017 21:45

Well, I'm gutted that I missed a post that was deleted by MNHQ!

Ahhhhhh, it's on a south facing window sill, so I buggered that bit up too. I have trimmed the dead stick off at the top and I can see new buds coming through so it's still alive, just.

Once again, thank you for your advice and tips. I won't say anything to the cleaner as she obviously knows more about plants than I do Grin

Gutted I'm late to this thread, as I have just the user name for this exact type of situation!

Giddyaunt18 · 26/05/2017 22:07

I had one that just dropped its flowers one day. They are very delicate things.

Nicky333 · 26/05/2017 22:16

We had an orchid that wasn't at all delicate. We essentially left it. Watered it every couple of months when we remembered. No orchid food. Still kept flowering better than MIL's numerous orchids that she takes very special care of.

fullofhope03 · 26/05/2017 23:53

Smeaton! You have made me massively LOL!!!

Lavenderhillslob · 27/05/2017 09:06

Oh Jesus wept, I think it's getting worse. I'm sure the stem was still green the other day.

I don't think so, as the leaves look OK to me. I have an orchid in the bathroom. It gets a thorough watering once a week or so (though that involves sitting it in water for about an hour, then draining thoroughly. It usually flowers about every no one month's or so. The flowers last about three - four months and then they and the stem die completely. I cut the stem right back and wait. My plant is currently growing a new leaf and once that is done I'll start looking for the new flower stem to appear. I'm expecting flowers by the end of July. If I were you I'd tend to it and wait and see - you could be pleasantly surprised.

AStickInTime · 02/06/2017 10:52

An orchid naturally dies back like this. So long as the green leaves are ok it will throw out a new stork which grows very quickly and blooms even better next time!
