Trimmed or been knocked and the petals have fallen off?

Tartyflette · 25/05/2017 08:25

It looks a bit less than healthy to me, not the leaves but the flower spikes, and the a couple of the ends look a bit, well.... dead.
That's unlikely to have happened suddenly buy I agree the flowers can all come off at the same time. Perhaps she thought they were looking a bit manky past their best and helped them on their way. Grin

AStickInTime · 25/05/2017 08:28

Op, you need to get that orchid out of the box to expose its roots to the light, that's how they best thrive and survive.

You've got buds on the other branches so it will be ok but only if you expose the roots to the light

Mumsnut · 25/05/2017 08:30

Is this E Molesey? My cleaner is an orchid demon. I leave it all to her.

(They die if I try)

gamerchick · 25/05/2017 08:32

Why is it in a box?

TheMaddHugger · 25/05/2017 08:35

diddl · 25/05/2017 08:39

Why on earth would you think that your cleaner has "trimmed" it rather than petals have just fallen?

Look at the state of it!!

TheLambShankRedemption · 25/05/2017 08:42

Such clean grout though...

user789653241 · 25/05/2017 08:55

Maybe this is what she did, if she actually trimmed the stem.

Encourage flowering:
With moth orchids, once all the flowers have fallen, cut off the stem just above a visible joint (node). This may stimulate the production of another flower stem, which you should clip to a support. If no shoot appears and original stem turns straw-coloured, then remove it at the base. Most other orchids won't flower twice on the same stem, so cut off spent stems immediately.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 25/05/2017 09:14

Looks a good plant to me, can see some buds forming on the green stems.

Rule of thumb with an orchid (I have a lot) only cut off bits that have turned brown/straw coloured. Otherwise leave it alone and just water it occasionally. Some varieties only die back to the joint, others the flower spike dies right back to the main stem.

I don't dead head mine unless they are turning a bit crispy and haven't fallen off yet. I don't feed them either. Seem happy enough and flower for months.

Closedenv · 25/05/2017 09:18

Loving the sound affects thelongrain! I agree with others not cleaner necessarily. Does your cleaner tend to your plants normally?

sparechange · 25/05/2017 09:29

I'll be honest, I opened this thread hoping to see swans made out of towels

A half-dead plant has put a bit of a downer on my morning

gandalf456 · 25/05/2017 09:38

Orchids are very kill-able. I'd just ask in a non-confrontational way if she know what happened

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 25/05/2017 09:40

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 09:46

Tbh that looks practically dead anyway. Not the healthiest looking stems!

allegretto · 25/05/2017 09:47

My cleaner bought me an orchid for my birthday. All the flowers fell off overnight after a few weeks but it did start flowering again.

Syc4moreTrees · 25/05/2017 09:47

...cancel the cheque?

Liiinoo · 25/05/2017 09:53

We had cleaners in yesterday for a one off clean before house guests arrive tomorrow. That did an excellent job including taking all the rings and bits off the cooker and scrubbing them shiny. Only everything seems to have changed size in the process and I can't fit the cooker back together again.

Luckily (and by pure coincidence) someone is coming to service the cooker tomorrow so I hope he can work it all out. For today it will be BBQ at our house!

Redpony1 · 25/05/2017 09:53

I have a few, the occasional flower falls off or course, but never all at once!!

bingolittle · 25/05/2017 10:09

Maybe it got in the way of some cleaning spray by mistake?

(from the look of that grouting, whatever she's using must be pretty powerful...)

Avonandice · 25/05/2017 10:11

If it's a phalenopsis orchid they like their roots exposed to light.

Is the pot its in clear? Most of mine started like that as I buy them deliberately when they resemble dead twigs. They seem to thrive on neglect.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2017 10:16

My dad always grew phalaenopsis in bark chipping rather than compost. Some of the other orchid varieties were grown on bark rather than in it too.

I grew up in a household with a centrally heated greenhouse full of orchids :o

Envy Soup

I only kill the poor things. And I need to cut the root to make my african violet healthy again - it terrifies me that I will end up killing it instead because so far it has had better luck than any catus that has ended up in this house. Just killed the 10yr christmas catus and 7 yr old easter catus Sad althought I suspect some helpful sod might have been watering them for me Hmm
