Dishwasher Cutlery Baskets

AIBU to think that we go through more dishwasher cutlery baskets than is normal? I've had my dishwasher for 3 years and have already had to buy 2 replacement baskets as previous ones got holes and the cutlery falls through. So that's roughly 1 per year.

Is this the norm? Or are we a bunch of savages when it comes to loading cutlery?

How often do you have to replace yours?

I have had my dishwasher 7.5yr and I have never had to replace the basket. I didnt even know you could replace them.

Never had to replace mine either in 10+ years.

What on earth are you doing with them?!

My dad was very strict about knives being put into the basket handle downwards, because he reckoned the blades of sharper knives made holes in the basket. Do you load knives blade downwards?

Never had to replace a cutlery basket and have owned about 6 dishwashers over the years

Are you putting sharp knives in? Are you trying to wedge stuff in. I'm a bit baffled.

If DC drop cutlery from about 8inches above the basket, quite frequently.

Words have been had. It's happening less.

Which is extra good, because I have formed a small emotional attachment to the sliding cutlery basket in my Bosch, and will have to be replacing it with an actual Bosch one, not the generic cheapies I used to buy.

Never replaced one here either.

I do load knives with the blade down, but never put in sharp knives - just general cutlery. I put forks in pointing down the way as well.

Think it might be the "dropping from a height" issue.

I need one of those Miele ones with cutlery rack at the top.

Bosch also make dishwashers with a cutlery tray as I have one

We always get holes in ours - you're not the only one! Even though with our last one we didn't put any sharp knives or scissors in at all, and normal knives face up- still lasted only a year and a half. It's so annoying when the teaspoons fall through the hole - it takes us ages to get around to buying a new one!

Never - and I always put blades downwards - fearing injuries.

So you have fork tynes and other slim bits of metal sticking through the bottom of the basket and friction from them catching on the arms underneath when the machine is on. That is wearing away the plastic or things are catching on the arms and tearing the plastic. Or both.

I have the business ends of cutlery facing upwards, unless it's a teaspoon with the handle small enough to slip through the basket bottom. Sharp knives can go on the knife rack on top of the upper basket.

My pedantic sibling has one of those .Admittedly they are Olympic level faffers, but it looks such a careful placement of the cutlery, and fairly slow when I tried.Tbh I'd rather buy a new basket once a year.

Came on to say replace the dishwasher with one with cutlery tray at top rather than a basket. Frees up room in the main dishwasher and you'd have to try pretty damn hard to destroy the cutlery tray! Neff, Siemens, Bosch and Miele make them.

We put knives blade down. Never replaced a basket. Maybe your like that poster with the nailed of steel that went through any material??

I hate cutlery trays - life is too short to pfaff around laying forks and knives on their sides so that they drain properly and dont get watermarks and spotting. Took mine out and used the basket from the previous dishwasher - you just drop cutlery in, job done.

Buy a Bosch, Siemens or Miele. They all have proper, thick indestructible baskets. That is the only answer.

Sharp knives should be washed by hand, but if you do put them in the dw, then always point down. When my kids were young it was on the news about a boy who tripped over the open door of a dw and fell onto the cutlery basket. He was killed by a kitchen knife in it.

Also have broken basket. Think it's dropping from a height issue! Haven't got round to replacing it yet though!

Our dishwasher was bought in 1997 (Bosch) - used daily, still have the same cutlery basket.

We've replaced the basket once in 11 years. I put knives blade down and forks and spoons handle down. Most sharp knives I wash by hand though.

Previous dishwasher that we had for about 12/13 years - never replaced it. Should have kept the basket when the dishwasher died as it was still fine.

Current dishwasher - finally replaced it after 2 years when I spotted one in a shop as didn't know you could get replacements. It had a hole for over a year at that stage. I reckon they just make modem ones really badly.
