I'm not trying to hoike up my judgey pants here and this is a genuine question. I'm very much in favour of live and let live and to date, I've considered myself to be fairly open-minded but here goes. I popped downstairs to stick the kettle on and feed the baby so plonked myself in front of the TV to do it. Boob out and couldn't reach the remote so I was treated to Jeremy Kyle and honestly I'm baffled! Do people really live like this? How do folk manage surrounded by such drama? I'm wondering now if I'm really sheltered and this is real. Or I'm really out of touch and this is what people want on TV. It's like Jerry Springer only not as classy.

Do you think they are actors? I'm pretty sure they are a real people who are being exploited by this awful TV show.

araiwa · 23/05/2017 10:32

there are many more threads on here where there is more drama than any jeremy kyle show

JustHavinABreak · 23/05/2017 10:34

Actually Maud I never thought of that. Maybe they are actors. I just assumed that JK and his team hunted out really vulnerable people who allow themselves to be torn apart.

I actually watched an episode with people on who live in my old neighbourhood.

Him, her, her sister and the drama about the dc he had with both of them!!
He was a manky creep to put it mildly!!
And they looked like 2 old witches!!
Was hilarious seeing them proclaiming who he loves the most!! Poor Jezza. .

DearMrDilkington · 23/05/2017 10:35

Most of the people on JK are addicts or mentally ill. It's an awful programme that exploits people in crap situations.

JustHavinABreak · 23/05/2017 10:36

Araiwa I'm one of those MNers who gets overly invested and then finds out it was spectacular trolling.

OP posts:
araiwa · 23/05/2017 10:39

some people do seem to get themselves and their lives in some strange situations

why anyone would go on tv to tell the world about their horrible life choices is beyond me (i know its because they get to be on tv, get some cash, booze and a night out in manchester where its filmed i think)

ChildishGambino · 23/05/2017 10:43

Oh, they're real. And being exploited. Some people have truly chaotic lives and horrible childhoods and extremely difficult relationships.

Maudlinmaud · 23/05/2017 10:48

I have only been unfortunate enough to catch a few times. I can see why you started the thread. I believe they are put up in a hotel and have expenses paid. They also receive counselling as part of the show. It is most definitely exploitive and gives me the rage that people's rls and problems are used for morning entertainment. Jk is a vile little bully too.

allegretto · 23/05/2017 10:51

I don't think it's real - or at the very least they are asked to exaggerated. My flatmate went on a day time programme about insomnia when we were at uni and talked about how badly it was affecting her life. It definitely wasn't!

nannybeach · 23/05/2017 11:02

Definitely real my DD knew and worked with someone who was on there a couple of years back.

Launderetta · 23/05/2017 11:03

The programme seems to sink to new depths, searchibg out more damaged, vulnerable, violent people who are then bated to produce confrontation & maximise their pain. All with a faux "we're trying to help" gloss.
Makes me sad for society & for those poor individuals who are exposed so publicly.

AIBU or is this real
blueskyinmarch · 23/05/2017 11:06

It is absolutely real. I am a social worker and have met loads of chaotic/vulnerable families just like the ones that go on this show. Indeed i am aware some of the families i have worked with previously have been on the show or applied to be on it. It is a despicable show.

NonnoMum · 23/05/2017 11:10

It's banned in my house. The exploitation of the underclass to amuse the working class by the middle class.

ImperialBlether · 23/05/2017 11:12

It's real. Our window cleaner was on - not for anything to do with other women and cheating or anything like that, but for the effect of an alcoholic on the family. I really felt for him.

I have heard of someone near where I worked going on, though, and making up a load of baloney just for the £200 expenses.

You should never watch stuff like this. It is demeaning to those who participate in any way.

Dumbo412 · 23/05/2017 11:22

Definitely true that people live this way.
My whole childhood was like a JK episode. We were brought up in complete chaos. The only good news is I managed to escape it, however my siblings haven't managed to, they are firmly stuck within that cycle now.

Our family had it all, sexual, physical, emotional abuse, neglect. Benefits, my mam was married to my dads brother so my youngest sibling was my cousin. Had addiction in the family and another relative who thieved everything that weren't nailed down. FWIW I was the awkward stuck up one because I got a job.

ChildishGambino · 23/05/2017 11:23

If people didn't watch it, it wouldn't be on TV.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/05/2017 11:25

I do know of someone (an actress) who was asked to act in the show. That particular episode was definitely made up. I'm not sure if it always is though.

user1492958275 · 23/05/2017 11:42

Shamefully......I do know of (2) different groups of people who have been on the show.

One relatively normal guy (paternity) and then a set of your usuals you would expect to see on there.

I've spoken to both involved and they all said that jezza comes and speaks to them backstage and discusses the story etc before the show starts, then on the stage acts like he has no idea about anything. Apparently he's a lovely guy backstage! Just turns into a bit of a douche on the television. And one of them got an apology and a handshake after going off the stage because Jezza had been quite hard on them.

I assume they just cut bits that would make the show look bad if anyone calls him out on it. Idk though, because the audience must be aware?!

I also assume they're told to play up to the cameras a bit more. Weird way to air your problems, never will understand it but he does do some good so it's not always bad.
