Its a MIL thing and a Facebook thing - I know these get done to death but please give me some perspective! I posted a photo of 6 year old DS on Facebook. He is messing about pretending to sing into an inflatable microphone. MIL has commented "So sexy!" AIBU to think this is a) wierd and b) just a bit inappropriate?

I completely agree with you but even 15 years ago I remember hearing that some charities were 'sexy' and some weren't. This was said with a straight face. But not by grandmothers.

I would have deleted too. I had to delete a friend's comment the other day too and I feel bad cos she's a good friend but it was about pornography and I have brothers, cousins, an aunt all viewing it. I couldn't hack it. I deleted it. It'll have been noticed.

It does seem currently 'on trend' to call things 'sexy' - like plates of food, career choices, contracts & it's not being done in a (traditionally) sexy way. Things like 'That's not sexy plating' and we aren't talking about oysters etc. Gah. I'm not explaining it well 😖 But it's being used where you'd use 'good' or 'excellent' etc not anything to do with sex/attractive etc.

There are also areas of the country where this is regularly used, without thought. It doesn't mean the person finds the child 'sexy' just that they're doing something/looking lovely. It's a non word.

However, it grates on a lot of people who take it literally or aren't used to it. Having lived there for a while, it took me a while to get out of the habit when I moved away.

It really doesn't mean she thinks he's 'sexy'. It's used no differently than cute, adorable etc

However, there's no harm in telling her that you'd prefer she didn't say it.

Is your mother-in-law foreign and this is a mistranslation for 'handsome'?
