Budgie Smugglers

MGFM · 22/05/2017 14:41

Posting for traffic!

I'm not sure I think they are any more hygienic than longer swimwear but hey ho - off to France in a few weeks. Can my husband get away with swim shorts like these? Or do they need to be proper budgie smugglers?

Disclaimer - this is not my husband !

Why does he have to wear budgie smugglers at all?!

BarbarianMum · 22/05/2017 14:49

Because loads of French pools won't allow you in in swim shorts Koala

I think those are fine OP.

TheChineseChicken · 22/05/2017 14:56

Is this true?! We're off to France soon - does DH need to invest in tight swim shorts?

Yes, dh had to get tight ones like these. He'd rather never swim again than wear actual speedos! Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 22/05/2017 15:00

Oh, I had heard of that, but assumed it was only in public pools. And also assumed that OP was going on holiday and would therefore be in hotel pools or at beaches.

I hate budgie smugglers. Awful.

TheChineseChicken · 22/05/2017 15:00

Oh Lordy, he won't be happy Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 22/05/2017 15:01

So that's in all pools?

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/05/2017 15:01

You can wear speedos/ tight trunks with some looser ones over the top. It's pretty common amongst the locals actually.

MGFM · 22/05/2017 15:02

It is Euro camp but they adhere to the speedo policy. It mentions it in our welcome pack thingy

Interesting. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of only allowing speedos for hygiene reasons?

MGFM · 22/05/2017 15:06

I assume they take the loose ones off when they get in the water?

nokidshere · 22/05/2017 15:07

Yes! Even my children were banned from the pool because they had swim shorts and not trunks - we didn't know about the policy back then. it's a pain but you will get kicked out so it's not worth moaning about if you know beforehand

LiftElevatorWhatever · 22/05/2017 15:19

You should see the Italians in their swimwear to really appreciate the budgie smuggler in all its tininess. Wink

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch · 22/05/2017 15:26

Ah, the budgie smuggler...I used to go fruitpicking in the summer holidays, and there were usually three or four lads from Eastern Europe (can't remember which country - this was a long time ago) staying in a caravan on site and picking along with us. One particularly hot day one of them appeared in a pair of the tiniest black trunks I have ever seen, before or since. They were so tight and clingy you could see he'd been circumcised. Scarred for life, I was. Scarred, I tell you.

justmatureenough2bdad · 22/05/2017 15:30

out of curiosity...why are budgie smugglers worse than tight, revealing bikinis?

Whosthebestbabainalltheworld · 22/05/2017 15:33

They'll do. I've bought 3 similar pairs for DH and 2 DS for this summer's trip to France. DH is unlikely to get his wet at any stage during the holiday Hmm

picklemepopcorn · 22/05/2017 15:36

I had that conversation with my DM. I'd say, boobs are often on display anyway. Boobs are not used aggressively.

I'm more intrigued by why board shorts are unhygienic. What is is about budgie smugglers that makes them better?

Teaandadunk · 22/05/2017 15:38

Is it just France or wil DH be refusing to swim in Italy too?

LesLavandes · 22/05/2017 15:39

I have a home in France and have never come across this rule. 😂😂😂. No Eurocamp for us. The makes in my house would refuse to go. Ridiculous 😂

bruffin · 22/05/2017 15:40

Can they wear jammers instead?

MGFM · 22/05/2017 15:44

I think it is probably because a man would wear board shorts all day - and then get in the pool in them. So transferring dirt from everywhere. Whereas the short trunks wouldn't be worn in the same way. Well that's what makes sense to me anyway.

We ran foul of that rule last summer in France. DH was wearing a pair of loose, but not ridiculously so, trunks that he'd bought in the campsite shop of a French site (even part of the same chain) the previous summer. French lifeguard came over, pointed to them and pronounced them to be 'not possible' in the pool. Poor DH ended up in my swim shorts (which I wear with a tankini top) while I wore my one piece. Grin

Whosthebestbabainalltheworld · 22/05/2017 15:55

A French gite owner told us it was because the farmers were wearing their shorts all day in the fields, then hopping into the pools for a dip at the end of the day.

picklemepopcorn · 22/05/2017 17:12

Ew! Ok, I get it now...
