AIBU to only cook 7 differnt meals a week for my Husband, toddler & baby..?

Monday - pasta night
Tuesday - mince & tatties - household favourite
Wednesday - vegetarian shep pie
Thursday - spag Bol
Friday - fish dish
Saturday. Pizza night
Sunday curry night

I will pack veg in to dishes and pulses etc and also add veg as side dishes

I'm trying to budget money and make my life easier.

Anyone do only a repeating 7 day meal plan

I used to do a 4 week one but it was a pain if I'm honest.

It couldn't possibly be unreasonable!

Pigwitch · 20/05/2017 18:22

Well it's not unreasonable but it would bore me to death!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 20/05/2017 18:22

oh god how dull!

Can you at least do a 10 day rotation so it's not always "on Wednesdays we have shepards pie"?

You'll all get bored, or more of a worry, they won't get bored, and get stuck in their ways, making it difficult to make something different one week.

WritingHome · 20/05/2017 18:23

Not unreasonable but we would all get sick if it. Except perhaps dh who is always gratifyingly grateful for all and any dinners I make for him. He is never ever fussy and would be happy to eat whatever

noeffingidea · 20/05/2017 18:27

Looks fine to me. We really only have 4 or 5 different dinners in our house, though not on a strict rota.
You can vary it a bit by doing different curries on curry night, or different fish dishes on fish night.

limitedperiodonly · 20/05/2017 18:28

Up to you and your husband. Do you have Date Nights as well?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/05/2017 18:29

It wouldn't bother me. We have chicken 3 or 4 nights a week and fish on the other nights and I'm quite happy with that.

ginsparkles · 20/05/2017 18:29

Not unreasonable I suppose but I wouldn't like it. It's possible to budget without having the same meals every week.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 20/05/2017 18:30

If they are popular meals with your family i think it's perfectly reasonable. 7 days between having something and having it again is long enough for me personally not not get "sick" of it. It's also nice to know what you're having. Especially if you change up little things like which veg you include, or using sweet potato rather than normal etc.
I probably would change the days a little bit so it wasn't sheperds pie after mince and tatties though, those are a bit similar.

elephantoverthehill · 20/05/2017 18:30

Why not do it the old fashioned way? Joint of meat on Sunday eg lamb, then cold lamb and bubble and squeak on Monday, shepherd's pie on Tuesday and then 4 days only to plan. If you have beef then it's spag bog on Tuesday etc.

MaidOfStars · 20/05/2017 18:30

Not unreasonable at all. Our household has rotation meals - they might change every few months if I learn a new recipe! But we are routinely boring in terms of food.

Current rotation (we eat dinner separately on two nights a week) are: pasta Monday , Thursday chilli/curry with chickpeas/etc, Friday tapas, Saturday steak/stuffed peppers, Sunday is admittedly a bit freestyle.

Cagliostro · 20/05/2017 18:32

Seems fine to me. DH would be perfectly happy with that, I'd get bored too quickly but I wish I wouldn't!

Anyway you've just said eg "fish dish" so no reason it has to be exactly the same if you don't want it to be

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/05/2017 18:33

I couldn't do it tbh.

It's all heavy and saucy

I'd be desperate for a salad or stirfry by week 2.

I'd compromise and do two week plan and perhaps feature some lighter dishes and the freezing of left overs

overmydeadbody · 20/05/2017 18:38

I do a two week plan that changes every three months to reflect the season, so winter features stews and pies, and summer features salads for example.

That works well for us and keeps it varied enough while be really easy to plan and shop and cook.

CaulkheadUpNorf · 20/05/2017 18:40

Your house and your family. Do what you want.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 20/05/2017 18:40

It's not unreasonable no but I'd get bored of it very quickly, sorry.

Laiste · 20/05/2017 18:44

I'd love to do this. I'm utterly beyond bored by cooking and eating my own food anyway and a plan sounds a great way to stop having to give it any more head-space a fine idea.

Personally i can't at the mo as i never know how many bloomin people i'm cooking for from one day to the next. (Anywhere between 2 and 6 and not always at the same time. aaarrrggh.)

hellokittymania · 20/05/2017 18:45

I have been getting a lot of ideas from YouTube. You could always type in pasta ideas and see what you get. I really like to do wraps, fajita type things. I love Asian food, but can't cook it very well. I do know how to do a few simple dishes though like shrimp with tomato and pineapple, my own version of sweet and sour chicken and a few other things. Maybe you could have a theme night, Monday could be Italian Tuesday could be Mexican Wednesday could be Thai?

TheExuberant1 · 20/05/2017 18:50

I would get bored of the same food every week.

Thingvellir · 20/05/2017 18:51

Per pp, I'd be worried about my DC getting very limited and set in their ways. I try and give variety and we aim for one thing they've not tried before a week. I want my DC to be able to eat pretty much everything as adults, I think this is a life skill

Your plan sounds really dull...sorry

AtleastitsnotMonday · 20/05/2017 18:53

The first they that strikes me looking at that though is that you are using really generic terms. You could say people in India may eat curry every day of the week but the dishes will be hugely varied. So I guess you could eat a really varied diet under those generic titles. I probably eat a fish dish, pasta dish and curry each week but not the same ones.

strikhedonia · 20/05/2017 18:54

I know some families who do that, if it works for you, why not. I can't think of anything worst for my house. I don't even know what I fancy for diner tonight, or how hungry I will be tomorrow.

Do you always fancy a pizza on a Saturday night? (if I may, your menus sound really low on fresh vegetables, do you really eat pasta or potatoes every single day?)

Yukbuck · 20/05/2017 18:56

Not unreasonable. I think planning is a good idea. I'd probably do a 2 weekly thing though. I've noticed you don't have a roast on there, that's a fairly normal thing around here! Not every week, but when there is time, a roast is always happening!

honeyroar · 20/05/2017 19:00

It doesn't really matter what we think if your family is happy with it. I have a lot of stock meals (chilli, ratatouille, curry, bolognaise) that I make in bulk and freeze in single portions, then I add other meals in and amongst.

Eolian · 20/05/2017 19:03

Not unreasonable to eat some of the same meals pretty often, but the same 7 every week? I'd be bored within 2 weeks tbh.
