AIBU to only cook 7 differnt meals a week for my Husband, toddler & baby..?

Monday - pasta night
Tuesday - mince & tatties - household favourite
Wednesday - vegetarian shep pie
Thursday - spag Bol
Friday - fish dish
Saturday. Pizza night
Sunday curry night

I will pack veg in to dishes and pulses etc and also add veg as side dishes

I'm trying to budget money and make my life easier.

Anyone do only a repeating 7 day meal plan

I used to do a 4 week one but it was a pain if I'm honest.

Looks basically ok to me if you are varying within the schedule. Curry night for example is a pretty broad canvas and could be anything from a lentil dhal to a Thai green curry and back again. Likewise pasta can be done a thousand ways, and fish also includes many possibilities.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 20/05/2017 19:05

I think I'd switch a pasta night to an omelette or a jet spud. ..

Emmageddon · 20/05/2017 19:12

I tend to cook only chicken, fish and mince dishes, which could be very dull, but there are so many different recipes to try. I think it's a good idea to have a meal plan, but the same thing every week might get a bit boring.

arbrighton · 20/05/2017 19:19

That does sound rather dull if it's the same week in week out. I agree that a meal plan and sticking to it and a budget is reasonable, but not 7 day repeat

BikeRunSki · 20/05/2017 19:22

My MiL has been catering like this for about 50 years.

greenworm · 20/05/2017 19:23

I think given that there are some very general dishes in there like 'pasta dish', 'fish', 'curry' it doesn't have to be that repetitive. There's a lot of variation in those three. The spaghetti Bolognese & shepherds pie every week might get a bit boring, but you might as well try it out and see if you get sick of it or not.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 20/05/2017 19:27

Could spag bol night alternate with a chilli? You have no chicken dishes at all. Mince, then shepherd's pie, then spag bol, all very samey in a row. Could you do a fortnightly schedule instead to incorporate some variety, even if some dishes are on both weeks?

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 20/05/2017 19:29

I think that sounds fine! If the baby and toddler are happy eating it then I'd keep on doing it! Maybe adding a beef stew and soups in winter.
I basically cook about ten different dishes on rotation so I may not be the best person to askGrin

We do a weekly meal plan generally a weekly menu in our house looks like this:

Steak jacket potatoe salad/med veggies

Cajun chicken and green rice

Lentil dhal/chickpea curry/home made naan and veggie side

Butternut squash and mushroom filo pie and seasonal steamed veg

Red pepper and prawn risotto

tacos/fajitas/nachos dips

Mushroom pasta and garlic bread

Ellieboolou27 · 20/05/2017 19:42

Lots of mince, my dh would be ok with me doing it but I'd get bored after week one.
We have a roast every Sunday unless it's sweltering hot and a freezer night on a Friday, pizza, nuggets or fish fingers and chips for dc.
I couldn't face the same 7 dinners for long, but if your family are happy and it makes it more economical/ easier then go for it.

Daytona79 · 20/05/2017 19:47

We mostly have salads for lunch along also baked tatties and sandwiches or noodles and omelettes.

Yeah currys / fish / pasta night I will do different dishes

Pizza are all homemade including dough etc

Both baby and toddler eat everything and anything , husband not so much he more a meat and 2 veg types and would eat meat every day but we are cutting back costs and he wants to be healthier so agreeded to red meat once a week

Turkey mince for spag Bol, a fish and chicken dish then some veggie dishes on other days

I did do a 4 week plan with different food every night but it was a lot of effort if I'm honest , so wanting to cut it back to 7 days to make life easier and the fact I'm returning to work PT soon so I can make easy foods on work days etc

I will try it then maybe change it every few months

Shep pie is vegetarian not meat

Spag Bol is made with turkey mince

I'm a vegetarian but they are not I will have a veg version apart from shep pie it will be veggie one

I pack my curries/ spag bols etc full of veg as otherwise hubby wouldn't eat any, I add spinach to loads of dishes, ones I can hide it in. Plus I always offer veg as side dishes too

Both toddler and baby eat all types of veg, they not fussy at all.

That would bore me to death, sorry.

limitedperiodonly · 20/05/2017 19:57

Are you looking for validation or suggestions OP?

Ellieboolou27 · 20/05/2017 20:23

In that case not so bad, if my dh was to offer me that menu cooked for me 7 days a week I'd renew my vows Grin

BeepBeepMOVE · 20/05/2017 20:33

That looks dull as dishwater. Like being in an old peoples home or something. What if you fancy something else? Is it going to change with the seasons at all?

mrsm43s · 20/05/2017 20:40

I do a weekly meal plan each week. I check out what's in the cupboard/freezer and plan around that. TBH there are lots of dishes that come out week after week, like omelettes or spag bol etc, but this gives for a bit more flexibility than rotating the same 7 day plan. I use one of [https://boxcleverpress.com/menu-shopping-magnetic-fridge-list-293.html these] for planning, and it really works for me.

Whilst there are broader cateogories (eg pasta or curry) that you can vary a bit, I think I'd still get bored eating the same 7 meals for the foreseeable future. Is there any reason that weekly planning won't work for you?
