To not want a white car

cakesandphotos · 20/05/2017 17:38

DH and I went car shopping today. Found a lovely Vauxhall Insignia, all the bells and whistles, high spec car, within budget but it's white.
It has everything we need with space and gadgets and boot size but I don't want a white car. All the other non white cars are a lower spec but for the same price.
AIBU to not want a white car or am I being ridiculous and precious?

A bit ridiculous if it's got everything you want/need, but I can understand. They're so bland aren't they.

Paint the Ghostbusters symbol on the side and learn to love it.

steff13 · 20/05/2017 17:49

Can't the dealership get you a different color? I don't love white cars, but I could get used to it.

NoSquirrels · 20/05/2017 17:54

I have recently turned down a white car to buy- we're not great at regular car washing & it would be embarrassing.

Salesman agreed that within a couple of years they all start to look worse, even with careful owners.

KC225 · 20/05/2017 17:57

I had this conversation the other day. Car colours all seem to be silver, metallic grey. white or black. Occasional red these days

steff13 · 20/05/2017 18:01

That's true, KC. I recently upgraded from a boring silver car to an orange one. Or, "blazing copper," it's called. Smile

KoolKoala07 · 20/05/2017 18:06

I didn't want a white car but was the best for the price at the time.Best thing I've ever done was buy a white car. It's stays incredibly clean. I love it and would have white again.

DappledThings · 20/05/2017 18:09

Got a new car earlier this year. Best one available was white and we did dither for a bit but went for it. It's fine, nobody really cars what colour it is and I stopped noticing it standing out very quickly

FinnegansCake · 20/05/2017 18:11

YANBU, I'm not keen either, I always think they look a bit cheap Confused

dingit · 20/05/2017 18:12

If it's an automatic gear box be aware they are known to be unreliable/ need repairs £££. Got rid of ours pdq.

freshlysqueezey · 20/05/2017 18:12

Just think tho your car won't stand out and you won't get random people you know letting you know when and where they saw you

Radishal · 20/05/2017 18:13

Obviously missing something- we have a white car, great spec etc - does it make my bum look big?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 20/05/2017 18:14

What Joffrey said. Either that or give it Olaf features.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/05/2017 18:14

If it was everything I wanted I wouldn't discount it on the colour.

oneoldmare · 20/05/2017 18:14

We have a white insignia and we love it!
Originally we were looking for one in charcoal but saw a white one and we thought it looked classic.
It stays looking clean from a distance for quite a few weeks, haven't regretted it at all

AlmostAJillSandwich · 20/05/2017 18:16

Vauxhalls come in standard white or red, all other colours are extra.
We have an astra atm (hire car, we had a grey one but been written off) which is white and it is AWFUL. So dirty, even rain marks show up on it, it just looks filthy and grubby.
It would cost you a few hundred to get it re sprayed if you dislike the colour that much, would that be an option if it is otherwise what you want?

TheExuberant1 · 20/05/2017 18:18

I am not keen on white cars. I have a black car and it shows up every single mark! Before that I had silver which was a bit better at not showing the dirt! If the price was right and I liked everything else about the car then I would still buy it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/05/2017 18:20

My car is black and always looks dirtier than DH's white car. The only colour I would discount would be brown, white wouldn't bother me but I hate brown cars!

cakesandphotos · 20/05/2017 18:33

Apparently there are no other cars of that spec in the network, apart from the white one.
Good to know I'm not the only one and also good to know white isn't all bad!
This is all made worse by my friend who said drug dealer when I asked her opinion…

I love my white car, but there are some colours I absolutely wouldn't have. Lime green or brown for instance. If you don't like white then YANBU, it's a lot of money to spend on something you're not 100% happy with.

It doesn't show up dirt any quicker than another car. The worst cars I've had for showing up dirt were black.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/05/2017 19:05

Agree that black cars never look clean. I've never had a white car, so can't comment on those.

YANBU to not want a car where you don't like the colour, how long do you have to wait for the car of the same spec and in a colour you like. How much extra will it cost, is it just the extra £500 or whatever for a choice of paint colour, or is this white one that's available now at an extra special deal price?

If it's a lot extra, imagine what you could do with the money saved, eg would you rather have a white car and a holiday or just the same spec car in a colour you like? Or can you do without some of the bells and whistles to reduce the price difference. When I'm choosing a company car, I usually get the lowest spec model with the features I can't do without. I see no need to pay extra for things that I'm not interested in.

Storminateapot · 20/05/2017 19:10

My car is white, it wasn't what I would have chosen but it was exactly what we wanted in every other way at the right price. You get used to it, I rather like it now and it's surprisingly waaay more forgiving of dirt than my previous black car was.

smu06set · 20/05/2017 19:12

I have had exactly the same conversation with my DH this afternoon! Ideal car, well priced, but its white and i dont think i can live with that!

catsarenice · 21/05/2017 07:36

We're having the same debate over a Nissan Qashqai in a horrible beige colour. The sensible part of me says that when actually driving the car I won't really be aware of the colour and I'm not exactly going to stare at it on the drive very much but ....it's such a horrible colour!! Would snap it up in white though....

lanbro · 21/05/2017 07:42

I own a car wash and would never buy a white car! You need to wash it weekly otherwise they stain, tar and sap show up really badly and need professional removal, apart from the fact they look so dirty after a bit of bad weather!

Silver or red are good colours for looking clean longer. Black is another bad colour for keeping clean. Mine is purple and needs washing at least once a week, obviously not a problem for me!
