AIBU To ask for further investigation??

So yesterday, my cosmetics case was stolen from my office desk. I used it, put it in the drawer and went off to the ladies. Ended up having a short chat with a colleague aftwr and returned to my office about 20minutes later. I have my own office with a door.
On my return, the case was gone......with £300 worth of cosmetics.
I've asked HR to look at the cctv, but they refuse as it would be demeaning and I am responsible for my own stuff.
I completely understand my responsibility, but what is the point of the cctv if we don't use it when needed. I wouldn't even want to be told who it was, but surely the powers need to know who the magpie is??

How on earth is it demeaning? Confused .. supposing it had been a purse with £300 cash in it.. would they have still says the same. What is the purpose of having cctv if they don't use it? Definitely demand that they check it and go to your superior and beyond until you get a result. A thief is a thief and that's a not someone sneakily pinching a lipstick, it's a valuable item.

Call the police. Your company is refusing to investigate, the police will make them hand over the CCTV.

Bizarre reaction from HR. WTF would be demeaning about looking at the CCTV? It's victim blaming to say you are responsible for your own stuff. Definitely take this further.

Of course they should investigate, this is stealing in the workplace! It wasn't even left out, it was in a drawer.

It's a crime. Tell Hr that you are informing tge police. Your Hr depth are being a wuss. They don't want to deal with icky stuff

Demeaning? My guess is they looked at the footage and someone high up stole your bag. I'd definitely take this further. YANBU.

very odd reaction to a theft, I would be involving the police its a lot of money and as others have said if it was your purse of something work related Im sure they would take it more seriously!

Out of interest where do you leave your coat and handbag (contains house keys, car keys, personal mobile, purse etc)? I'm expecting your answer to be in your office too, in which case what does your HR suggest you do? Take your coat and bag with you every time you go to the loo, use the photocopier or speak to a colleague? Or do they provide lockable lockers so you can secure your belongings? Your HR's position regarding it being your fault that someone stole from you is ridiculous and I can not imagine the point of paying to install cctv if it can't be viewed. I think you have every right to pursue this.

Don't inform HR that you are involving the police if you have any reason to suspect they may be trying to cover something up - the footage may well "disappear"

I agree. Tell HR that you're reporting to the police. Don't threaten to. Just do it and tell them this is what's happening.

I swear someone's been going in my drawer at work (open plan office) so I've taken to locking it.

You were being responsible for your own stuff- that's why you put it away in a drawer in your desk in your office!

Am now wondering if the HR individual took it... seeing as the whole point of CCTV is to prevent/capture wrong-doing! Why have it if you're not going to use it?

It's theft. If they won't investigate it, then pass it to the Police. That's appalling. And not cheap to replace either!

Call the Police, seriously, have the police not got more important things to be dealing with?

I would suggest returning to HR and tell then you are considering contacting the Police, I am sure that will galvanise them into action and they may review the CCTV.

Not the point of the thread I know (and FWIW I agree that the company need to deal with it and I suspect they don't actually have CCTV but don't want to admit it) but how the fuck can you fit £300 worth of cosmetics in a bag that fits in a drawer?

How much does make up cost? Shock
