AIBU To ask for further investigation??

So yesterday, my cosmetics case was stolen from my office desk. I used it, put it in the drawer and went off to the ladies. Ended up having a short chat with a colleague aftwr and returned to my office about 20minutes later. I have my own office with a door.
On my return, the case was gone......with £300 worth of cosmetics.
I've asked HR to look at the cctv, but they refuse as it would be demeaning and I am responsible for my own stuff.
I completely understand my responsibility, but what is the point of the cctv if we don't use it when needed. I wouldn't even want to be told who it was, but surely the powers need to know who the magpie is??
AIBU??

Can you go to someone else and say on top of the cosmetics some 'work stuff' also went missing

A lie but ..

youarenotkiddingme · 20/05/2017 17:01

Well it will be more demeaning for them when you've called the police and company has to co operate in an investigation for theft likely involving one of their employees.

LonginesPrime · 20/05/2017 17:01

OP, it's clear from their response that HR took your makeup...I would watch their eyeshadow choices over the next few weeks...

Seriously, though - they're probably worried that they would be accepting liability for your loss if they investigate, as investigating would imply they are taking responsibility and sends the message it is within their remit. Still a douchey response and if it were me, I'd be complaining to my boss and threatening to quit unless something is done, which works a treat with jobsworth idiots if used sparingly-.

statetrooperstacey · 20/05/2017 17:01

Tell the HR woman to GIVE ME BACK MY MAKE UP!

Or tell them you will need to report to police to get a crime number to claim off work insurance. See what she says to that.

EmeraldIsle100 · 20/05/2017 17:04

Get hold of the organisation's CCTV policy, check the purposes which will say something along the lines of crime detection and disciplinary matters. The footage is usually deleted automatically after 30 days so don't waste any time.

If your organisation doesn't do annything phone the police asap.

statetrooperstacey · 20/05/2017 17:04

Also start talking loudly about your frequent impetigo and conjunctivitis flare ups, which are at least a change from all the cold sore breakouts.

I'd say involve the police; I had something stolen from my desk at work once and my company immediately called the police. Never quite got to the bottom of who the thief was but people in the company were very upset that one of their colleagues could be stealing from them and I got a lot of support.

The fact is it is theft and if I'd just spent that amount on anything (cosmetics or otherwise) and someone took off with it, I'd be furious.

Re the £300 on cosmetics; if it's a brand like Charlotte Tilbury or similar then it doesn't take much for it to amount to £300 worth and yes it would fit in a bag in a drawer.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 20/05/2017 17:10

I wouldn't bother going back to hr, if they have looked and it was someone 'embarrassing' to confront then they might accidentally lose the footage. Go straight to police, police can liaise with building manager to get the info. Good luck!

Floggingmolly · 20/05/2017 17:15

I'd suspect HR know something they'd rather you didn't. What a bizarre response! I wonder if the CEO has some kleptomania issues and they're trying to protect him?
I did some temp work years ago in an organisation that had a Catholic priest in a fairly hands off but relatively high position. He would amble into the communal kitchen and help himself to whatever he fancied from the communal fridge, and nobody said a fecking word. Ever.

happypoobum · 20/05/2017 17:26

Agreed I would go straight to police. You must update us though Grin

Fragglez · 20/05/2017 17:34

Do you have cover on your home insurance for items outside the home?

Obviously that doesn't help you with working with a thief or having a useless HR dept but it might help you get replacement make up.

Also, if you are feeling awkward pushing it, it might give you a reason to either explain or threaten Police involvement to HR if insurance co wants a crime ref number.

sk505 · 20/05/2017 17:35

Thankyou all. I was so upset about this since yesterday, I just wanted to check I was still being rational.
I have emailed my boss with the whole story and (given it's the weekend)....lets see what happens.
I work in a fairly large multinational company and have been there over 14years. To say I was upset and disgusted is an understatement. Quitting has also crossed my mind as I refuse to work in a place that allows theirs to get away. I've included in my email to my boss.

I had a quick look at the cctv policy and it states that an independent body will investigate any cases of internal accusations. That seems fair enough. I really don't want to know who it was.....but a thief must be caught.

I'm also just about to file a report with the cops online. Thankyou all for your support on this!!

In response, I store my handbag and other valuables in the same drawer. Now I'm wondering if someone went through my wallet....I didn't have any cash on Friday.

Secondly, I don't mean to be arrogant, but yes, it is all designer makeup and just a few bits do add up quite quickly. The cost would be to replace it all.

I think HR know who the thief is, and are desperately trying to cover for them.

Much more trivial, but I once had some earphones nicked from my iPod, that I'd left on my desk at work - they looked like expensive ones but were Poundshop dupes, so I had a bit of a wry grin at that one. Still bloody annoying though, and there were only about 15 people working there, no outsiders in the office that day, so it must have been a colleague.

Coneheadmum · 20/05/2017 18:23

I think you need to give HR a face-saving reason to revisit their decision which was either just plain lazy, or suspicious, but 100% not right. So maybe tell them you have just realized you can't currently locate x and are thinking maybe it was in your cosmetics case as well (where x could be medication, a company note-book or something that you think will make them act)... Sorry about your makeup. Maid swiped mine once in fancy hotel and was mightily miffed.

LizzieMacQueen · 20/05/2017 21:00

Is it well known that there's cctv? Odd that someone would risk their job over this.

sk505 · 21/05/2017 08:11

You're absolutely right. I can't believe the balls of the person who went into my office and walked out knowing that there is cctv

AyeAmarok · 21/05/2017 08:20

Someone stole a wallet in my workplace, hardly any money in it. The police were called anyway and CCTV checked.

Thinking about it, my very small makeup bag probably has about £300 worth in it too.

£40 Foundation
£50 eyeshadow pallet
£25 mascara
£25 eyeliner
£20 bronzer
£20 Elizabeth Arden
Probably at least £100 of brushes
And the make up bag itself is a fancy one.

It does add up. I can absolutely believable it would have had that much.

twocockers · 23/05/2017 14:07

@sk505 any update?

sk505 · 23/05/2017 17:19

Sadly not. I can't believe how useless hr are being. I'm sure they are hiding something.
I got basically non answers from HR, the facilities manager and my immediate boss.
On the post that be side, I've signed up with two headhunters and have 5 interviews lined up.
I just don't want to stay here anymore.

sk505 · 23/05/2017 17:19

Oh.....and I logged the crime with the cops.

Good luck with the job search!
