warning booooring. laundry related.

have visitors to stay the weekend, one of them is my mum.

she just had a strop because she doesn't want to sleep in bedding that hasn't been boil washed.

I only wash bedding hot if there is a reason (d&v, worms, athletes foot...)

aibu to book her into a hotel?

Tell her to ring her own - and make her own bed and bloody lie in it

RB68 · 19/05/2017 20:19

bring even

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/05/2017 20:21

Ewwww no, just no. If she brings her own bed linen, it may have been slept in for months.

timeforabrewnow · 19/05/2017 20:21

you lot are inspiring me to actually go and change the sheets.

The idea of clean 'boiled' sheets suddenly seems very appealing.

timeforabrewnow · 19/05/2017 20:23

The OP's mum would thinkme very slovenly indeed as I only wash our sheets around once a month, once every 2 or 3 weeks is an absolute personal best.

bigbluebus · 19/05/2017 20:28

I don't think I've ever actually boil washed anything - at least not since the days when I used to help my DM as a child on Monday washdays using the Twin Tub washing machine.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/05/2017 20:36

....then gang the sheets on the line and leave overnight to get "darked" on , to quote another thread.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/05/2017 20:36

Hang not gang.

Inertia · 19/05/2017 20:52

How hypocritical to get all self-righteous about boil washing when she doesn't even change the bedding between visitors!

We only boil the dishcloths/tea towels/ cleaning cloths here.

RedBugMug · 19/05/2017 22:10

har har har
have given her the most threadbare towels I could find.

If you use bio powder, boil washing will denature the enzymes. Sheer vandalism of clever protein chemistry.

Justdontgetitatall · 20/05/2017 00:52

Loupy You only shower once a week?!?!?! ShockHmm Think I was just a little bit sick....

RightOnTheEdge · 20/05/2017 01:03

Loupy didn't say she showered once a week. She said she boil washed her bedding once a week.

steff13 · 20/05/2017 01:11

My washer doesn't have a boil wash setting, and I'm not sure what bio powder is. I wash towels and underwear on "hot." Everything else gets washed in cold. I wash everything in Gain.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/05/2017 14:47

'Bio' ( either powder or liquid detergent) is how those containing enzymes (proteases, amylases, lipases to break down protein, starchy and fatty stains) are labelled in the UK. 'Gain' isn't a brand sold here but according to this https://www.pg.com/productsafety/ingredients/GainCleann_Boost.pdf some of the range are 'bio'. It's quite important to know, because (apart from using appropriate temperature), bio detergents shouldn't be used on protein fibres (wool, silk) as the protease digests them.

(The OP announced this as a boring laundry thread, it's been too entertaining so far.Grin)

RedBugMug · 20/05/2017 17:23

survived the first night - phew

4 more to go
and that's enough for me for the next 5 years.
dh and I will go out (to the bench on the green like teenagers) and let her play board games with dc.

I came to the conclusion she doesn't like me very much Sad

hollygolipo · 20/05/2017 17:32

Boil wash them today and accidentally put her favourite cardigan/dress/broomstick in with them.

steff13 · 20/05/2017 17:34

That's good info, Errol, thanks. I'm sad you all don't have Gain though. It smells better than anything.

RedBugMug · 20/05/2017 17:41

yes, thank errol for the information!
I always use bio powder, as it gets stuff much cleaner

puckingfixies · 20/05/2017 17:51

I wash bedding at 40 as the label suggests, would it be ok on a 60 or 90 wash or will it fall apart? I use napisan powder or dettol laundry liquid along with detergent but presumably could leave those out if I could wash at a higher temp.

kiwiquest · 20/05/2017 17:51

My MIL when she comes to stay loves to ask when I will change the bedding/towels/do the cleaning/iron stuff........my house is kept clean and regular changed bedding but just not on her 'schedule'. I don't iron. Ever. I was also miffed after a week she complained why I hadn't put her duvet cover on her bed?? I pointed out my brand new white duvet cover for her, was I sure? Yes it's just bloody white! And the pillows? Yes they have cases, they are white too!!
Anyway long story short, any bedding related queries I now just breezily tell her to ask DH and he will do it. Funnily enough she's much less keen to ask her darling boy to do stuff like that (skivvy for her) than me!!!

RedBugMug · 21/05/2017 09:41

the worst thing: making 'polite conversation' at 7am on sunday, because they want breakfast together.
