I have a job interview tomorrow and I just cannot see past my sadness and go

I feel like I've ran a marathon. I've had 40 failed interviews in a year and a half. I keep coming second or very close. I've never been successful though and there's no prizes for best runner up.

I am so bored being unemployed and feel like my life is on pause. I'm doing nothing and going nowhere. After each rejection I feel depressed, sad and I have such strong headaches I've been prescribed co codamol. I have frequent fainting and I'm so tired from crying I only just manage survive.

If I had a job I would be happy but getting one feels as likely as hell freezing over at this point.

I have my 42nd job interview invite for next week. I went for an interview last week, got to the building and just cried and cried and cried. Then I was numb. I felt nothing. I had neither the mental or physical strength to go in.

I am a real fighter but I didn't have the fight anymore.

I have tried to pick myself up enough to go next week but I just cannot see how I will make it through the interview. I have a worry that I will get into the room and start crying or faint.

Buyt if I can no longer go to job interviews I will stay like this forever.

Right now I'm thinking it would be better to move on from job interviews and accdept I will never get a job. I am a qualified professional but the jobs go to people employed in an agency capacity and already known to the interviewers. I am unable to join any agencies as I do not have a reference for a job I did 4 years ago and this is a requirement of all of them. I have tried applying for jobs below what I'm qualified for, temporary jobs, fixed term, etc etc etc. I only get interviews for jobs in my field. I also do well in interview but never get the job. Feedback is always positive.

Right noe I have no solutions, no coping mechanisms, I have no strength and do not see how I can go to this interview.

AIBU and where on earth do I go from here?

I'm a Senior Recruitment Consultant and the fact you didn't have a reference from four years ago wouldn't hinder me in the slightest from offering you employment

Depending on what your field is and where you live OP, get in touch. Surely I'd be able to help or point you in the right direction of who could. The reference isn't the big deal you think it is, and you sound like you just need that chance

I was successful and got a fixed term contract of 12 months. 42nd interview and I was successful. I will never doubt myself again 😁

Treysanatomy · 24/05/2017 12:49

Well done!!!

innurendo · 24/05/2017 12:49

Well obviously I would be fine for paid work. Once I get a job I will be so happy I could almost fly! I'm only depressed because I'm unemployed.

It seems to me like waiting to become fit to get a job until you have got a job is a non-starter, and that your belief it will be solved when you get one might not prove right.

I don't know you so I don't know, but from what you say some light voluntary work might do you a power of good at the moment.

Work itself has a positive effect on mental health in many cases, it is worth doing some for this reason alone when you are at your wits end with unemployment and if it doesn't help you might be better off finding out before that successful interview than afterwards. It can give you a morale boost, getting into the rhythm of feeling knackered from work at the end of the day won't hurt and just the positive effects on you could make you interview better.

Most importantly of all, YOU CAN DO THIS DARLING Flowers you deserve a win.

innurendo · 24/05/2017 12:53

Oh I missed your update because of NC - CONGRATULATIONS! Happy for you Flowers

R2G · 24/05/2017 12:56

I think you should go and speak with your doctor. It sounds as though you are depressed? Have a break for a few weeks. You've done really well. Also look up EFT tapping, I think this would help you before interviews xx

Icallbullshit3 · 24/05/2017 12:56

Whoop whoop! So happy for you that's awesome. Congratulations OP! Smile

R2G · 24/05/2017 12:57

Oh - you got the job! Well don't take my advice! Well done on being strong enough to do it one more time and turn a corner x amazing show of strength x

And all my sadness has gone. I feel like I could run a marathon.

iloveeverykindofcat · 24/05/2017 13:06

I'm just going to ask about one aspect of this because it's what I know about - do you think the cocodamol helping or hurting? It can cause bad reactions including faintness, diziness and mood changes, particularly at higher strengths.

iloveeverykindofcat · 24/05/2017 13:08

Oh never mind! Congrats!

viques · 24/05/2017 13:11

congratulations, I was going to say you were doing something right because you were being called to interviews. So well done, you clearly deserved it and were the right person for the job.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 24/05/2017 13:16

Really well done. I know someone who applied for more than 300 jobs in a previous recession, just never seemed to get lucky, went on to get the foot in the door somewhere and has had a successful 20 year career since.

It is just the one break you need, and you have yours!

If you still feel down/like taking co-codamol a lot, it could still be worth chatting with the GP or trying self-help strategies (online CBT, mindfulness, exercise), as you want to make the most of the job once you start.

Italiangreyhound · 24/05/2017 13:22

sophiagrace27 sorry to hear this, it must be very hard.

Go and see your GP. Get referred for depression.

Do you have some support from a family/parents/partner. Can you get a session of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to get you through this interview?

I really think some voluntary work would help you. Voluntary work is easier than regular work because you can dictate when you are free to go. It is harder because you do not get paid but you do get to learn skills and develop some networks. Some places will pay your travel and even give you lunch.

Good luck... Go to the GP Thanks

GeekLove · 24/05/2017 13:22

Congratulations! You did it! It's good to celebrate and this is from a fellow jobseeker.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2017 13:22

Take a couple of weeks out and then start again. No-one who wants to work is unemployable.

As a matter of interest, have you ever asked why you didn't get the jobs? Not everyone will tell you, but you may get some useful feedback. It might even be something you could improve/address etc.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2017 13:23

Missed your update - well done!

Italiangreyhound · 24/05/2017 13:24

ah, see you updated under a different name? well done.

AyeAmarok · 24/05/2017 13:27

Yay! Well done OP!

NotMyPenguin · 24/05/2017 13:32

It sounds as if one of your main problems is the lack of references from your job four years ago.

I know the company itself doesn't have you on its files, but would you still be able to contact your previous line manager (or head of department/team) etc and ask them for a reference?

NotMyPenguin · 24/05/2017 13:33

Ah, I only just saw your latest update!! (Missed it because of your name change). I am so pleased for you. Now you will have recent references and something to really get into. Congratulations!
