One rule for the privileged posh and another for the plebs (Oxford student who stabbed boyfriend)

I went to Oxbridge but this story still rankles me. A med student at Oxford gets out of sentencing (for now) because she has a promising career ahead of her. What she did to her ex constitutes as a crime. But lo and behold the judge found at least for now in her favour.

Had this been some of the girls and boys I grew up with no shadow of a doubt they'd now be in custody.

I think it's a lot more because of her gender rather than her university.

NoLoveofMine · 19/05/2017 17:44

I think it's a lot more because of her gender rather than her university.

I think you mean sex. You're wrong, anyway, as there are countless examples of men spared prison for domestic violence. Another one who doesn't bother to actually look into it and just spouts myths which suit their agenda.

Kimonolady · 19/05/2017 18:07

Can people stop saying "it's only because she's white", "it's only because she's a woman", "it's only because she's training to be a doctor" or "its only because she's posh"?
READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE. The one linked right at the beginning of this thread.
There is nothing out of the ordinary here at all, regarding the decision to delay sentencing or to consider a suspended sentence.
You can waffle on all you want about how she may or may not be posh, may or may not be privileged, but only reason this story has blown up so much is because she's a pretty blonde Oxford student with a posh name.
If you think this situation is wrong or unjust, campaign to have the sentencing guidelines changed. There is so much shit on this thread.

Allthebestnamesareused · 19/05/2017 18:08

Hmm - so is it any better that she is a drug addict about to become a doctor rather than a violent person about to become a doctor?

HostaFireAndIce · 19/05/2017 18:36

Bachelor's from one institution then MA from the other - you can't after all apply to both at UCAS level

Actually, I don't believe you can do this. The only MA you can get from Oxford or Cambridge as far as I know is the one Bertrand mentions that you buy 21 terms after you matriculate and you can only get that from the one where you did your undergraduate degree. A genuine postgraduate masters from either is usually an MStud or an MPhil or something like that to avoid confusion with the one you buy.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 19/05/2017 20:06

Leaving aside all the posh/ not posh etc, what struck me on listening to this on R4 this morning was the judge saying it would ruin her chances of being a cardiologist. Well er yes!!! Surely she cannot be entrusted with other people's lives?

Apparently she has already faced two other charges of assault on separate occasions so it wasn't a one off.

Artisanjam · 20/05/2017 17:58

The judge has not sentenced her yet. That will happen in September. It may be in September that she does in fact go to prison. It may not.

Either outcome is completely compatible with the published and publicly available sentencing guidelines which sets out what options the judge has.

kali110 · 20/05/2017 18:03

OnionKnight seriously? Def not a doctor i would want! What a disgrace.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/05/2017 18:20

I can't argue with you, op. If she'd been a ner do well raised on social security benefits brought up on a council estate.

There's no doubt she'd be facing a heavy jail sentence.

ARumWithAView · 20/05/2017 18:21

Hosta I see you've thoroughly gripped the point of the thread there. Do tell Sherlock, what other secrets have you unearthed today?

She's correct about the imaginary MA vs the actual MPhil/MSt, and you're the one who made it an issue in this thread. Why claim you're an 'Oxbridge' graduate in the first place? Do you think it strengthens your argument, or gives you a free pass to spout all the usual stereotypical bullshit? FFS: 'privileged posh' vs the Greggs-eating run-of-the-mill plebs. If you don't work for a tabloid, you probably should.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/05/2017 19:12

ARum Thanks for your insight!

Those complaining a man would have been sent to prison for the same know nothing of the law and really should read the Secret Barrister link provided.

I have said on one of the myriad other threads on this that I have seen a lot of people's records. through work. And you'd be astounded what people 'get away with' before they get custodial sentences.

Now you may feel that sentencing is too lax, that's fine. But all this bullshit about her not getting away with it if she was male? What a load of bollocks. Multiple friends and family of mine have been sexually assaulted and/or raped, sometimes as minors. The only perpetrator who even had to speak to a police officer; male victim. Men get away with worse every day of the week.

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2017 19:29

It is amazing how people don't let the facts get in the way of a good story, isn't it?

And how they ignore the facts, even when they are put in front of them over and over again............

Sorry I should have said Oxbridge educated
I don't think anyone who was Oxbridge educated ever said "they went to Oxbridge"
Hmm

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2017 19:55

The number of Oxbridge graduates, PhDs and people with multiple degrees on here is utterly amazing. I usually can't be bothered to say anything, even thought they usually trip up after a handful of posts. But this one was too blatant to ignore.

Justbreathing · 20/05/2017 20:50

I suggested something I shouldn't have regarding the OP
and their clear goady antics!!
Oxbridge Confused me thinks not

Scholes34 · 20/05/2017 21:29

You are privileged to be able to study medicine, and more so if you do that course at Oxbridge, as there are many, many people who have missed out on that opportunity to study medicine because places are limited. This medical student has squandered that opportunity with her behaviour and her fitness to practise has to be called into question, whether or not she gets a custodial sentence. Will her medical school have the balls to do that?

scaryclown · 20/05/2017 22:04

Just to correct the patriarchal overcorrection of women argument, women are typically given sentences a third of the length of what men are given for the same crime. This is consistent across all categories of crime. Women are less likely to receive custodial sentences, crime by crime, than men.

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2017 22:29

Scary clown -what do you mean? Can you give some examples?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 20/05/2017 22:32

I found this

women serve shorter prison sentences than men and for less serious offences. 26% of all women in prison and 28% of women serving sentences of under 12 months had no previous convictions, compared to 12% of men.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 20/05/2017 22:34

81% of women are serving a prison sentence for a non-violent crime.

Theft and handling was by far the most common offence, accounting for 40% of all sentenced women in the year 2013.

Old figures though
