It makes me gag.
No one reached out, there was a discussion, or we approached them or we asked them a questions.

I work in science. I don't reach out to people, I work with them.

It's mainly one colleague who says it.

Just needed to get that off my chest!

"Mis spoke" = completely fucked up and said something I shouldn't

Beerwench · 20/05/2017 01:11

Even us non corporates get subjected to it....... An MD pretentious twat a few years ago in a relatively small hotel in a quite rural area, with a specialised clientele most of the time, decided we were behind the times by talking to each other normally and decided that 'moving forward' was going to be our buzz word.
He also created an 'ethos' - a bit of paper stuck on the office wall that had random 'inspirational' Facebook status' and some odd words in another language that meant 'continuous improvement'
I set a full 4 course wedding, glasses, cutlery the lot, for 100 people while he fucked about with that.
I moved forward straight out the door Grin

snickers Grinat "Maureen from HR"

We have minutes that say we are reaching out to a collaborator.

This chap is a very proper, formal Japanese academic.

I think he'd recoil in horror if we did actually reach out. She's sending him a chuffing email asking for data FFS.

I was once sitting next to an Iraqi chap in a meeting where the presenter blathered on about "getting all our ducks in a row so xxx wouldn't think we were trying to referee our own match" and I could just hear this poor bloke murmuring "Ducks....?" under his breath, earnestly.

Singing from the same hymn sheet i.e. Agreeing

LidlAngel · 20/05/2017 06:43

I hate 'piece' as in 'with regards to the training piece...'. Winds me up a treat. Piece should only be used when talking about jigsaws. Or cake.

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/05/2017 07:31

Now I see things like 'singing from the same hymn sheet' and 'ducks in a row' as just regular turns of phrase rather than proper corporate bullshitery.

Wondermoomin · 20/05/2017 09:50

Llanali thank you! I misread, oops. Horizon(al) planning is more intuitive than horizontal planning 😂 Still a wanky way of saying 'planning' or 'forecasting', I agree.

Yes, those (and 'the devil is in the detail' and 'sea change') are well established idioms. They're the sort of thing I could have imagined my DM using in appropriate circumstances. 'Sea change' is from The Tempest.

I am sometimes a little worried by the obligatory Impact. My next book is going to be a hard-back of well over 400 pages: that could make quite a dent.

I may have the wrong thread - but I thought a poster on this thread or a similar one had attached a very funny cartoon on the use of the horribly expression 'reach out' - which basically was a little diagrame showing the only acceptable use of 'reach out' - ie if you are a member of the Four Tops!

I think it is this thread because when I do an Advanced Search, the cartoon / diagram shows by the thread - but I do not see it on the thread itself.

If anyone can re-post the link or image, that would be great. Can't wait to share with colleagues who share my loathing for the expression 'reach out'!

Google image search is your friend.

Awesome, Snickers - thanks so much!

sweetbitter · 30/05/2017 17:31

YANBU, I cannot STAND how "reach out" is suddenly the new "get in touch with". Every time I hear it (usually on US TV series) it sets my teeth on edge. DP is sick of me commenting on it though...
