Bed time for 14 and 16 yr olds on school nights

Apparently we're ridiculously strict and EVERYONE else gets to stay up later... so how many hours before getting-up time do your teens go to bed?

(Not asking what time they go to bed, cos obvs that depends on what time they have to get up, so just asking how many hours between going to bed and having to get up again)

Thanks!

dd 17 gets in from college at 7.30pm and is in bed by 8.30 and can sleep through till 6.45am.

My just turned 17 year old doesn't have a bedtime. She usually gets 8/9 hours. I never have to wake her up, she gets up before me usually on weekdays she is working early at weekends she will often have a nap when she gets home.

By 16 mine were making that decision for themselves. Dd1 needs a lot of aleep dd2 less so. Ds age 15 goes to sleep about 930 he is likely the one who needs the most slwep. Up at 630. Dd3 age 13 goes to her bed about 9 but is rarely asleep until 11m she rrads and relaxes even as a baby she didnt need a lot of sleep

Thanks all, much appreciated.

The thing is, 16yo is a real night-owl, who'd happily stay up all night, but struggles hugely with getting up in the morning.

The 14yo otoh is an early bird who falls alseep quite quickly once in bed - but wants to stay up till the same time as 16yo. However we all suffer with then - snapping at everyone, gets very aggressive with lack of sleep.

I don't know whether to try letting them self-regulate or not. I think we'd have a very angry household very quickly, because they're not at all convinced that they need much sleep.

I brought bed time forward by 30mins if they weren't ready in the morning. They earned it back by being ready the next day. However, I did it when they were younger, so it was easier to limit their access to wifi etc.

16 year old is usually in bed by 9 of her own accord, 17 year old manages themselves 14 year old.in bed by 9, 12 year old 830 10 year old 730 and 4 year old 7 all up at 630 except 12 year old who has to be up at 6. But it's horses for courses isn't it some need more sleep than others.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/05/2017 16:21

Just 17 yo in bed by 10.30. Up at 6.45. No input from us at all at weekends or school holidays.

PortiaCastis · 19/05/2017 16:21

Dd is now 18 but at 16 she took herself to bed when she was tired. Probably got around 8 hours sleep and always got herself up at 7.30. There wasn't any point in me imposing a bed time as she didn't sleep.

AlexanderHamilton · 19/05/2017 16:25

9.15-9.30pm for my 13 year old. 10pm for 15 year I'd but she usually goes to bed at 9.30pm as she has to be up at 6.30am

Butkin1 · 19/05/2017 16:32

14yo DD goes to bed sometime between 9 and 9.30. She wakes at 6.30am and up at 6.40am as needs to be out of the door no later than 7am to catch her school bus.

Therefore she gets about 9 1/4 hours !

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 19/05/2017 16:41

We let ours self regulate from 14 onwards but we wouldn't put up with rudeness, snappiness lateness or bad school work so they tended to be quite sensible because of this.

You can't send a 16 year old yo bed that's crazy

cushiemoy · 19/05/2017 17:01

Ours (13 and 15) self regulate bedtimes, they're usually in bed 10ish. I occasionally say something about it being late if lights are still on when I go to bed about 11.
